oh wow i remember having to do that! i’ve recently moved back in with mine, but i have a full-time job which makes explaining away my frequent “purchases” unnecessary. also, i’m an adult so they don’t quiz me.

some good excuses:

• you’ve been into thrifting lately. you can lay groundwork for this excuse by watching videos on thrifting hauls (the legal kind haha), mentioning thrifting or the dangers of fast fashion to the fam in casual conversation

• you’ve been doing clothes swaps with your friends. laying groundwork is easy, just say you and your friends are considering doing a clothes swap. you could actually go ahead and do one to solidify the excuse and get rid of some old garments while you’re at it!

• you’ve been buying second hand clothes online from stores like Depop - expensive clothing is often sold for super cheap on there. you could even make a shop of your own with second hand items and say that you’ve been getting your money through selling stuff (providing your parents are the kind to be okay with that)

• you’ve been saving your pocket money to buy new clothes (providing you get pocket money)some other things you can do to support your reasons is to do odd jobs to earn extra money, so you can reference them to explain how you “bought” your things. you could also get a part-time job which has the added bonus of giving you both substantial money and an excuse, but no pressure.

hiding things properly is important. it’s not just a case of placing new clothes under old ones in your drawers so they don’t get found - this can be risky if your parents do your laundry. i used to put new t-shirts into sweaters and jumpers and fold them up in my drawers as one item. replacing is a good strategy - my parents never realised that i was lifting new jeans bc i got rid of my old ones every time, so the overall number never changed. camouflage works too - i wore black exclusively as a teen so it was difficult for my parents to tell my clothes apart and so to notice that i had new ones😅😋some other good hiding places are under your mattress, inside rarely-used handbags and backpacks, and behind the furniture in your room (wrapped in something so the fabric doesn’t become snagged and dirty.) you know your room better than i do so you can get more creative.

it might help to lay down some rules in order to avoid getting discovered. if your parents are the kind to go into your room/sort out your bedsheets and laundry/go through your stuff, you can address it under the guise of wanting more privacy. say you’ll do these things yourself - depending on your age this could be an entirely understandable shift in behaviour and a sign of maturity (e.g. doing your own chores=taking responsibility.) some parents might get suspicious, so maybe hold off on lifting until their suspicion fades. this could take a while if they’re the distrusting and controlling kind :/// doing your own laundry and washing also means that you can clean new clothes and make them look less store-perfect, which might be a tip off to a parent finding them in the laundry basket! believe me, they can tell.

i never let my parents see me bring shopping bags or new things into the house unless i was specifically going to use the “i bought it with saved-up money” excuse, and then only when i had 1-2 or so items at a time. i carefully folded up bags in my pockets when i left the house, and wore an extra t-shirt or something to pad the bags out with once i got somewhere private, like a public restroom. on the way back i’d hide the bags behind our wheely bins before entering the house in case someone was near the door, and then retrieve them in secret later. or if i didn’t get much i’d just body-conceal my stuff. this was only when my parents were in - i ended up familiarising myself with my parent’s schedules and made sure to line up my lifting sprees with when they were absent from the house.

i would introduce clothing gradually, sometimes only wearing things months after it was lifted. i worked out that three new things a month was pushing it, so big hauls were out of the question. my parents would always comment on something new i had, so if i wore something new i had a ready excuse to trot out in advance. sometimes they didn’t comment, so i knew they hadn’t realised. this meant i could wear something else new sooner than expected :D i also never gave an excuse until it was asked for: “when/where did you get that?/ that looks new…” giving an excuse when it hasn’t specifically been asked for is hella suspicious so remember to act casual. too much information is also suspicious; saying “oh yeah i actually bought this at [store] last weekend when i was out with my friend Stella, i got it with my money from babysitting” is wayyyy too much. usually you can just get away with a “yeah”, or “it’s from [store]” without having to add anything else ;0

it might be worth holding off on lifting clearly-expensive things or prestigious brands until you’re old enough to live alone or justify owning those kinds of items. if you really want something, you should choose a brand your parents aren’t super familiar with and remove the label. you can say it was making your neck itchy or something. don’t let them see the label, on the clothing or in the bin. in the same vein, dispose of all paper tags and labels outside the house - stick them in your purse or something for safe keeping until you can chuck them in a street bin.

oooookay lil nugget here we go.

first off - its okay to be scared. its actually better if you keep a little piece of you thats always scared, no matter if you’re experienced or a beginner. thats something that helps you keep track of what’s going on around you and helps you not get caught. when you get cocky or over confident, thats when trouble starts.

i cannot stress how important it is to start small. start small.start sosososososo small.smol

like a lipgloss from walmart or one plain shirt from old navy. maybe a lil pack of beads from hobby lobby. whatever you do, do it small.

this lowers the chance of you getting caught, and the chance of you freaking out more.

do this a couple times. lil thing here, lil thing there. this builds confidence. the more confident you are with yourself, the more likely you are to start pulling in bigger hauls.

be patient. dont rush anything. this is by no means a competition. this whole process of confidence-gaining takes weeks, maybe months for some people.

and another thing - the majority of us on here that are pulling in a shit ton of stuff? we’ve been doing this for years. ive been lifting for 3/almost 4 years now. do not feel like you have to hurry and catch up to us.

secondly -do your homework. read through people’s tip pages on here. read about hooks, magnets, detachers, keys, all the different types of security tags, concealment methods, horror stories - ANYTHING. everything will be helpful down the road. read up on how other people got caught so you dont make the same mistakes. read up on how that girl managed to bag 3 naked palettes and 15 Kat Von D liquid lipsticks. learn about cam placement and how JCP Sephora is a place to stay away from. learn SA behavior and how to tell if they are being nice or plain sus. Learn how to tell if a bag is going to be a good lifting partner or if its going to be a hassle getting things inside. get familiar with every aspect of this community. follow as many people as you can. get inspiration from everyone. learn this life. live it. breathe it.

thirdly - try and pair up with an experienced buddy. i have found this to be so helpful. you get to see first hand how they do what they do. you get to see them in action, and learn their methods. however, know that going out with more than 2 other people is sure to get you noticed and tailed. keep the lil lifting group to either a pair or 3 people. make sure you can trust them. make sure you know them.

STORES: Old Navy: they dont tag anything other than heavy coats and sweaters, some dresses, jeans, and in the summer some shorts. i re-vamped my whole wardrobe this summer courtesy of ON, but ive seen on here that they’ve started source tagging…. which makes me sad. so double check before you out anything into your bag. Hobby Lobby: there are like 7 cams per store all focused on the cashiers. go crazy. get your much needed art supplies. this is a great store for beginners - and other lifters who love crafting. Cotton On: nothing, and i mean NOTHING is tagged. idk why, but these hoes never tag anything and it makes me wonder what they’re even doing. i got christmas gifts for my brothers here this year, so i highly recommend this store. super easy. Dillard’s: do not let the large size of the store intimidate you - this place is heaven. sometimes you’ll get lucky and somethings been left off the rack and untagged. sometimes theres that teally cute wallet that you’ve wanted for a while and it doesnt have a single tag on it. go for it. conceal in the dressing rooms. trust me. formal dresses? no tags. (from what ive seen, and ive been to 3 Dillard’s in 2 different cities.) their desinger jewelrythat they keep down there? go for it. none of its source tagged or anything. i walked out once with 5 pairs of mate spade earrings and 2 wallets worth the 100 each. just pay attention to your surroundings and you’ll do just fine.

TIPS: - in the winter its cold as dicks, so wear sweaters. utilize these babies for all they’re worth. 1. sleeves are great for concealing small items like jewelry and lipsticks. 2. “i am so hot from all this shopping, is it okay if i have one of your bags to carry my sweater in? i would really appreciate it” (note: this only works with really nice SAs. some will be bitches and shut you down. you might have to try a couple of stores before you get one. and now you have a free shopping bag!) 3. put your purse in the crook of your elbow and drape your sweater over it. this helps conceal how big your purse is to begin with and hide how much its increased in size when you’re walking out. 4. idk they’re warm and fuzzy. they make me happy. - boots: stick things in there in case you forgot your purse or something. you can stick small things like jewelry and face masks down in there, its great.- go through your mom’s closet. or your aunt’s. grandmother’s. rich best friend, i dont care. more often than not, they have a couple of extra shopping bags from stores they’ve been too. my mom has Bath and Body Works for days, along with a couple of Coach bags and Ralph Lauren. these shopper bags can be used in the same way as a purse for hiding things in them. hide them in yoir bag on the way into a mall, and then in the bathroom, take out your lifted clothing and stuff one of the bags. that way, when you walk into other stores, the SAs think you’ve bought things from other stores. be careful and know the layout of the mall you’re in though, because if you’re carrying around an Urban Outfitters bag and theres no UO, then you’ve gone and fucked yourself. - be cautious, be wary, and not get greedy. get in, get out, and live to lift another day.

The things I’ve learned. Too fucking extensive guys. LP is a whole new WORLD.

Let me share with you some of the more lesser known things since taking this job.

1.) Companies ARE aware of the lifting side of the internet, they DO read our posts for clues.

2.) Lifters are usually on their game when they think they can identify LP. Those posts about like “you know it’s LP when ______such and such happens_____” they’re DEADON

3.) Know at Târget, cameras are always watched by one or two people and they communicate with at least one or two plainclothes by texting.

4.) SO, if you notice someone near you twice in a store and they are texting and not really shopping….BIG CLUE.

5.) LP make bets on how many lifters they can catch. It is a boring job, we mostly watch the cameras and find honest people.

6.) Catching a lifter gives us an adrenaline rush. It’s a cat and mouse game. Making yourself obvious only fuels us to hunt down others.

7.) Acting SUS will get our attention immediately. Distraction may work to divert our attention.

8.) BIGGEST RED FLAGS:

–> Drag queens, transvestites, people who seem like they are in wonky clothes or dressed beyond their gender. If you look weird, we will watch you whether or not we think you’re lifting. It’s simple human curiosity and entertainment.

–> Minorities. Especially minorities in large groups.

–> Large groups of pre teen girls

–> Anyone with a big bag

–> People with baby bags and strollers

–> People who wear beanies, hoods, hats, or other accessories making their face hard to see.

–> People who avoid sale sections

9.) Internal theft is investigated a lot more than shoplifters sometimes.

10.) It’s a lot harder for us to see you conceal when you’re walking in a straight line and using your hands discreetly. Walking will make us have to zoom and adjust to your movements, it’s a pain in the ass.

I was in the haircare section concealing and putting stuff into my bag and i stopped for a second and the only security guy there passed me. it takes talent to do what we do. you can read as many tips as you want, but when it comes down to it, it’s all about being observant, alert, quick, and sneaky.
