Budget rerooting tutorial part 2: rehairing
To begin rerooting, pick a small bundle of hair from the middle. It must be the middle because the hair on the doll will be half the length of the full hair. 10-15 strands or as pictured here (I'm not going to count):
Wrap the bundle quite firmly around your thumb.
Next run the long prong along your thumb under the hair. I use either the groove of my nail and skin or just the side of my thumb, but it gets slightly sore with this. You should be able to catch all the hair in the 'U' shape between the prongs.
Hold the hair and needle in one hand, holding the hair tight on the needle. Pick a hole to reroot. I normally go along the outside and work my way in.
Push it firmly into the hole until the scalp touches the tape base on the needle. Then remove. The hair should stay in place firmly.
If it comes out easily, you need to use more hair. If it is too hard to push in, use less hair.
Reroot the whole head. I never fill every hole because I'm only one man. I end up skipping a few. This doll is going to wear a hat anyway.
Finally, squirt a good amount of fabric glue into the head. Spread it around with something like a cotton bud/rolled up bit of paper towel. Leave to dry for a good 48 hours ish.
After that, I usually do a boil wash to set the hair along the scalp, then style it how I want. For this doll I'm going to be curling and cutting quite short.
