The missions their strange little team of mercenaries had been getting sent on recently were just easy. Simple task after simple task. Even targets from Khonshu were not difficult to deal with. Easy enough that they were fine splitting off to deal with things. It made double the money in half the time. Antonia was never the one sent off on her own, which bothered her a little bit but she understood the logic behind it. She was their team's worst player. That was fine.

This time, she and Marc were sent to deal with something she figured would be as easy as everything else. Somebody owed somebody money. She did not much care for the details of it at this point. It went sideways fast. The guy they were looking for was gone by the time they got there. He had anticipated their arrival and set up bombs around the place. Once they were too far in to get out quickly, those bombs detonated. The two of them were mostly fine physically. Marc's cape was an effective shield against debris for the both of them.

Of course, that did not matter much. The force of being blown backward, the ringing silence after the blast, the fiery rubble around them was all too familiar. All to real now, this was not a nightmare, the shock of pain caused by hitting the wall was enough to confirm that.

Not a dream.

"Oh God. We gotta get outta here." He took a few steps towards an exit he spotted in the distance. The building would be able to hold itself up, but he didn't know for how long. And he wasn't exactly planning on sticking around to find out. "Toni, c'mon!"

Marc started to make his way through the fire, but he paused when he didn't hear Toni behind him. No confirmation, no footsteps, nothing. He whipped around and saw Toni still leaning on the wall from the blast. His eyes widened and his heart started racing with worry. Goddammit.

Not a dream.

Or something else. Not real. It could not be real. She refused to believe that it could be. There was no smoke. She took a shaky breath. It was staggered but her lungs got air, not smoke. The world came into focus. The fire was real. And the rubble. And the blast. But the rest was not. The rest was not. This was a mission. With Marc. In the present. Not the past.

He turned to Toni, explaining the plan. He didn't know what was going through her head right now, though he could tell from her reaction that it was anything but good. "Okay, Toni, listen to me. We need to get out and we need to get out fast. You see that exit there? That's where we need to be."

A piece of rubble fell behind them, so Marc rushed the rest of his explanation. "I'll walk ahead and clear out the fires to try and make you a path. You follow me as fast as you can, with your shield over your head." Marc could see the fires spreading closer and tried his best to stay calm. "We're going to make it out of here. I'm not losing you too."

She cringed at how close Marc was getting to the flames. She knew they would do nothing to him, he had healing on his side, after all. But still, somebody getting so close to fire felt unnecessarily risky. She felt bad that he had to that for her.

She followed him out, limping the whole way. There was not much she could do about that. It did slow her down, which was dangerous but also annoying. Once she found a pattern to keep herself walking without thinking about the fact that each step felt like taking a bullet to the leg, she had time to think about other things. Or, one other thing that had drawn her attention.

Their team was rarely open about their pasts. She was pretty sure Wade knew it all but even he had the decency to keep it to himself, mostly. She knew nothing about Marc's past. It should have been obvious that he had lost a lot but somehow this was the first time it had occurred to her. Or maybe it was not. Maybe she had thought it a thousand times but that was not the focus.

""you too"..?"

"It's nothing." He said quickly, not really wanting to delve into his past. They were all terrible people who'd made terrible mistakes, he knew that, but that didn't make it any easier to talk about his own. Right now, he just wanted to focus on getting Toni out.

After some struggle, the two had managed to escape the flames. Smoke poured out of the destroyed building and the ground around them was starting to catch fire too.

"We gotta keep moving." Marc lead them to a nearby alleyway where they would be able to rest for a few moments. He unmasked himself and coughed, still feeling the effects of the smoke from the building.

Within a few seconds, the bandages wrapped around his body, curing him of his burns. He felt the pain for only a moment before it was all gone. He took a deep breath and sighed with relief. Then, he looked over at Toni.

Now that she could get a good look at it, her leg was bleeding pretty badly. That meant the suit was damaged, which mean that, more likely than not, at least a little bit of the burning was actually real.

Damn.

Well, that was a problem for later. Not too much later for risk of it getting any worse, but it was not something she could deal with right now. They had to keep moving.

He opened his eyes, looking up at the night sky. His view of the stars was narrowed by the two buildings that formed the alleyway they were hiding in. "Khonshu!" He called out, hoping to summon him.

In an instant, the large skeletal god appeared, craning his neck down from his perch on the rooftops. "What have you two idiots gotten yourselves into now?"

"Not the time." Marc hissed, inhaling sharply. "We gotta get out of here fast, and I don't think either of us'll make it very far on foot. Khonshu can fly us both out of here in seconds." He explained, taking a deep breath.

"Hm, I see." The god hummed, gently tapping his staff against the brick wall. "You'll owe me, Spector. I do not like using more... extreme powers like these."

Marc rolled his eyes. Of course Khonshu would use their current situation for his own gain. "Fine, yes." He moved his attention away from the god and towards Toni instead. "We'll be out of here quick. You just gotta hang on to me while we're in the air, okay?"

The god stood up, slamming his staff against the roof of the building. He raised his empty hand towards the night sky, which seemed to make it darken even more. Then, he pointed his staff in the air, making Marc fly up in an instant.

As he shot up, the mask wrapped itself around his face to protect him. He made sure Antonia was holding onto him properly so she wouldn't fall.

The two sped through the sky. Marc narrowed his eyes, trying to spot the apartment. He glanced down to check on Toni, who didn't seem to be doing great, but then again it was always a little hard to tell. Though he could probably infer that speeding through the sky around 3000 feet in the air didn't help very much.

He got up, dusting himself off as the suit slowly shifted away. "God..." He sighed, entering the apartment. Almost immediately, he was aware that Wade was gone. The house was too quiet. His eyes wandered around until they landed on a sticky note stuck to the fridge. Of course... Marc quickly read it over. Something about getting groceries... He couldn't be bothered to decipher whatever Wade had written.

He muttered a few things and slumped onto the couch, closing his eyes. He desperately needed rest after all that. He could already feel a headache forming.

"You'll owe me later, Spector." Khonshu boomed from the balcony. Marc couldn't be bothered to respond. The god's voice wasn't making his incoming headache any better.

From the mirror, Steven looked down at him. "Is the kit even going to do anything at this point? I don't think it was made for injuries this bad..."

Marc was equally unsure, but it wasn't like there was much else they could do about it. "It'll help a little." He got up, holding the kit. Steven's expression mirrored his own, which was a little unusual. The two didn't usually react in the same way, but when it came to Toni they seemed to be on the same page.

"She'll be fine." He told Steven, which seemed to reassure him. Marc walked back into the living room, medical supplied in hand. He put them down on the coffee table, then looked up at Toni. "Here they are."

"Hm? Uh- fine. Grab me a glass of water. Please."

He sat back down on the couch. He wanted to bring up how she froze during the mission, but now didn't seem like the best time. He was worried though and he wanted to know why it happened. And if he could help.
