Autumn draws near and with it, comes Lughnasadh.

Lughnasadh, pronounced “LOO-nah-sah” and known also as Lammas, is a Celtic festival that occurs from the 31st of July through into the 1st of August. It was observed fervently throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man and marks the beginning of the harvest season.

Lughnasadh is the celebration and ritual of the first harvest of fruit, wheat, and grain. This festival both acknowledges and celebrates the waning of light - Lughnasadh is the initiation of Winter preparation.

It is named for Lugh Lámhfada and his victory over the spirits of the Otherworld; he stopped their theft of Tuatha Dé Danann’s harvest. It is also in honour of his skills and craftmanship ability. Other deities at the fore during Lughnasadh include Demeter, Ceres, the Corn Mother, the Earth Mother.

Activities to be done during Lughnasadh:

Baking/Cooking: Sharing food is a good thing to do with each sabbat, especially those with agricultural ties. If you incorporate seasonal foods, and foods associated with the sabbat itself, it can be seen as an offering or as being done in honour of what you’re celebrating.

Take some time to enjoy nature: Lughnasadh is a time when the seasons are changing, so take this time to walk and enjoy the last that summer has to offer. Collect things whilst you walk to put on your altar if you have one.

Construct an altar: if this is something you do, decorate your altar with some of the items mentioned in the list above. If you’re pagan and have a deity who corresponds with this holiday, leave an offering on your altar. In Lugh’s case, he is a god known for his skills in craftmanship and His ability to turn hHs hand to anything. He is also known for playing the harp, so anything you have crafted or that has taken skill to create will be well received by Him.

Decorate your home: if you like, small decor changes can really get you in the mood and act as a celebratory act.

Bonfires: Invite friends and/or family to a bonfire. Not only is Lughnasadh a celebration of waning light and of the god Lugh, it is a celebration of fire. Share plans to remove negative habits or influences from your life with your loved ones, burn representatives of negativity, drink to future prosperity and toast to Lugh. Light a candle and do the same, if you are not yet an outed witch.

This spell is to maintain peace in the home and between family members. You will need:

sugar

salt

dragon’s blood powder

a small bottle

red wax

Mix the sugar, salt, and dragon’s blood powder. Place the mixture in a small bottle, and seal it with red wax. Keep this bottle in the kitchen (on a windowsill would be best, as the sun and moon have view of it). When finished with it, bury it off of your property.

When the wolf at length had had his sleep out, he got on his legs, and as the stones in his stomach made him very thirsty, he wanted to go to a well to drink. But when he began to walk and to move about, the stones in his stomach knocked against each other and rattled. Then cried he,

“What rumbles and tumbles Against my poor bones? I thought ‘twas six kids But it’s naught but big stones.”

And when he got to the well and stooped over the water and was just about to drink, the heavy stones made him fall in and there was no help, but he had to drown miserably.

Greed is a curse unto itself, and this spell turns that malice back onto a person whose greed is harming the people around them.

Make or acquire a cloth poppet. You’re going to be stuffing the poppet, so make sure it’s a decent size, with plenty of room in the stomach area.

It is not necessary to have any hair or nails from the target in order to make the spell work, but it can help. In the absence of such things, you can name the poppet thus:

“Poppet, I name you [NAME]. Your limbs are their limbs. Your flesh is their flesh. As you suffer, so shall they suffer.”

With scissors or a small sharp blade, open a slit in the belly of the poppet. If there is pre-existing filling, remove some of it. Into the cavity where the stomach might be, place a whole chili pepper (any kind will do), seven small pebbles, and seven tacks or thorns. Carefully stitch the poppet closed and whisper to it:

“Rumble and tumble, A pepper and stones. Swallow your greed, And choke on the bones.”

for when you still want to work a little magic into your day and feel healthy af too. smoothies! here’s just a couple of suggestions with fruits and their correspondences, but you can totally come up with your own ideas!

for all recipes, chop, cube, or slice all fresh ingredients. freeze and chill respective ingredients before blending!  feel free to add your favorite herbs and other ingredients you love to your potions!

1 cup frozen blueberries 1 cup frozen raspberries 2 cups cubed watermelon

for familial love, prosperity, and protection  🍌

2 tbsp. rolled oats ½ milk or substitute 1 frozen banana

for  fortune, friendship, and wealth  🍓 🍃

½ cup frozen strawberries 1 cup milk or substitute ½ cup kale or spinach

for beauty, divination, and love  🍌🍊

½ frozen banana ½ cup orange juice ½ cup greek yogurt

for nurturing, prosperity, and protection 🍈🍌

½ medium avocado 1 frozen banana 1 cup milk or substitute

for  fortune, friendship,  purification, and cleansing 🍓🍈

½ cup frozen strawberries ½ milk of choice ½ cup coconut flakes

for nurturing, prosperity,  chastity, and fertility 🍌🍊

1 frozen banana 1 cup milk or substitute 2 tbsp lime juice

for luck, wealth, and chastity  🍍🍌

I have been magic-ing my ass off this year, and I’ve made some observations. Most of these are for me, but you might be able to relate.

Sometimes you have to ask the question differently to get what you want.

Sometimes you have to settle for a tad less than what you want.

Sometimes you have to ask multiple times.

Did you know that impatience has an energy? Me neither. At least, I had never thought about it.

The Universe doesn’t actually like hearing you whine and will attempt to shut you up … that may just be me.

I’ve made several attempts to stop magic with telepathy and … no.

I’ve made attempts at performing magic with telepathy and yes.

Magic people can “smell” other magic people. The more magic you do the more fragrant you are. People also assume that you’re powerful as opposed to … .really busy.

The entities will laugh at you and go tell other entities … it’s fucking high school all over again.

Humans can be familiars and that’s weird.

If your spell fails, ffs just do it again. Spilled milk, man. We all have off days.

It’s not that big of a deal.

Always attempt to have a reversal spell on hand because … . reasons.

By reversal, I mean have a spell on hand that will cause the opposite result … not necessarily an actual reversal spell … per se.

Doing magic to fix magic is as much funny-haha as it is funny-oh-no.

Different people react differently to the same spell. If you’re flinging magic at people, you may want to keep that in mind.

You can randomly end up with astral pets, and pet thoughtforms. They’re yours be nice to them. They have feelings.

We really should talk about the role of forgiveness in magic practices. It’s not just a Christian precept. 

You can always back away from the edge, even after you’ve jumped.

Maintenance spells are some of the most important work one can do.

Yes, your tarot cards will get tired of you asking the same question over and over and will tell you so.

When you hit rock bottom, reach for the ladder and not the jackhammer. I totally am still eyeing the jackhammer.

Watching a baby witch take their first steps is absolutely awe inspiring. 

Fucking write the spell reversal while you’re writing the spell. Just … just do it.

It’s okay to ignore your inbox. 

Try a new form of magic before writing it off. Make a magic swatch as it were. 

People who you do not have pre-arranged agreements with will, for the most part, never tell you that they felt your magic. They will be incredibly passive aggressive about it, though. 

Keep some record if not all the records. I suspect that next year, I still will suck at keeping records.

Quiet deities =/= absent deities. Don’t make them prove it. You’re not going to like it.

Small magic and frivolous magic seem to mean a lot to people. Don’t underestimate how much a small act might mean to someone.

If you recognize a lesson from the past, skip to the end and do not repeat the past.

 What You’ll Need: 

 - Coconut or extra virgin olive oil 

 - A container that closes tightly 

 - Sugar (white) 

 - Peppermint extract 

 - Fresh coffee grounds 

 - Quartz crystal for extra boost (optional) 

 - A spoon or something to mix with 

 - A mixing bowl 

What To Do: 

 - Measure out an amount of white sugar that will fill your container and put it in a mixing bowl 

 - Add three drops of peppermint extract for every quarter cup, or to your taste 

- Mix by folding the sugar into the extract; this could take some time depending on the amount you have, make sure it’s mixed well 

 - Add fresh coffee grounds to the sugar and extract using the same method of mixing 

 - Add liquid/melted coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil to the sugar in small doses and mix very well; keep adding oil until you have the desired consistency  

*Author’s side note* If you do not add enough oil, the scrub will become dry and very harsh on your lips as opposed to a simple exfoliant! And too much can make it a goopy, useless mess, so be careful with this step! 

 - When your scrub is at the consistency you want, you can transfer it into your container of choice 

 - As an added benefit, you can put a quartz crystal inside to charge your scrub; this step is completely optional 

 ~~~ 

This scrub is designed with coffee for dispelling negative thoughts, overcoming internal blockages, and peace of mind along with grounding (x) so that your words will become empowered and you’ll find your voice with more ease. The peppermint adds extra power to the scrub and encourages change in yourself or your old habits, (x) ideal for becoming more assertive.

there are plenty of ways to work to work a little magic into your day without doing a full on ritual, and your daily (hourly?) tea is one of them! here’s just a couple of suggestions with fruits and their correspondences.

raspberry - love, strength, endurance and reliability

black currant - for  abundance, lust, and fertility

rhubarb -  for fidelity and protection.

mango -  harmony, balance, contentment, fertility. 

strawberry -  for fortune, friendship, and love.

lemon -  for friendship, love, and purification.

cherry -  for divination and love.

blueberry -  for protection.

apple -  for banishment, fertility, healing, love, protection, and purification.

pear -  for wealth, love and lust.

orange -  for beauty, divination, fortune, love, purification, and wealth.

there are a number of combinations of fruit teas, with other types of fruit as well as spices, herbs, flowers and teas. teas can be simple, easy potions with a variety of brewed intents. 

Mabon {Fantasy} Feast

Continuing the tradition of making fantasy feasts that one day I will get to enjoy for real! Some of these recipes I am definitely making for tomorrow! (Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lughnasadth).

This is the Autumn Equinox and a time of togetherness and reflection. Naturally the food will be fall themed, but I love to reserve fall flavors like maple and apple for the beginning of autumn (samhain gets more pumpkin spice and sweet potatoes). I would add maple to the glaze and make it with dumpling squash filling with nuts

Dessert: Cider Cinnamon Sugar Donuts Apple Tart Maple Sugar Candy Leaves Caramel Apples with Almonds

Drinks: Chrysanthemum Tea Apple Cinnamon Sangria Hot Cider

for those times when @breelandwalker‘s banishing powder is too kick-ass. instead of a “gtfo,” this is more of a “hi please leave me alone.” because i’m passive as hell.

salt (table salt is fine; perfect, actually)

coffee grounds

chamomile (from a tea bag)

a dash of vinegar

a dash of vanilla

translation: “go away go away go away GO AWAY please :)”

mix; sprinkle around to get rid of unwanted entities (without being overtly rude*), or put on a taglock to gently push a person out of your life

Mix (ground) evenly then add as much of the mix as you like to your cigarette/ pipe/ 1 bat hitter. You can add tobacco or cannabis to any of these mixes. **tbsp=table spoon

* can be bad in high amounts / not for pregnant/ breastfeeding

-stress reducer mix 1 tbsp Skullcap 1 tbsp Catnip 1 tbsp Chamomile 1 tbsp lavender
