Bob Dylan was hospitalized on May 25, 1997, seriously ill with histoplasmosis, a life-threatening fungal infection that caused the sac around his heart to swell.

The 56-year-old Dylan had complained of chest pains during his birthday celebration the day before, and remained in the hospital for almost a week. He had to cancel his European tour, and remained under treatment for the next few months.

Dylan resumed touring in mid-summer 1997 and released Time Out of Mind on 30 Sept. (recorded in Jan.), his first album of original material in 4 years.
