One year ago today, I was waking up from 8 hours of intensive surgery to remove aggressive cancer from my thyroid and neck. It was an unexpected speed bump with the surprise diagnosis being just a month earlier. Going up against a life-threatening illness forces you to stop and assess your life. Especially when the plan is to cut out the gland that releases hormones that control metabolism and the way your body uses energy. This body I have is not the same one I had 12 months ago. It doesn't respond the same to food and exercise and discipline. I don't understand why it is the way it is and, despite the pills and the specialist visits and the ongoing efforts to increase self awareness, getting in sync with this new body seems to be taking so long. But more than the physical challenges, it brings incredibly complex emotions; sadness, fear, guilt, vulnerability. Why do I get the "all clear" so easily when kids are dying from a more aggressive cancer? Will I ever be able to reach the life goals I had set for myself? Where did my confidence go? But... 3 things... 1. I love my body. It may be a little damaged but it's mine and we are in this together (plus the scar is kinda cool). I choose not to be angry at my body for getting sick. I won't criticise it when my Fitbit tells me I'm in the "obese" category. (Rude!) And I won't use words like "ugly" or "fat" or "gross". 2. I choose to be grateful. I have so much to be thankful for and that is where I will focus my thoughts and my energy. I will not be down-trodden by what might have been. I won't focus on what someone else has that I don't have. I am alive. I have wonderful friends and family. But possibly greatest of all, I have been prompted to know myself better. To listen to my body and spirit. To develop healthy practices for my mind and soul. Becoming more self aware is the most rewarding lesson and I am gradually letting go of fear and self-imposed expectations. 3. I don't have cancer!
