some more photos of ireland my grandfather took in 2004. feels like a memory of his home that he left for me - how the isle looked to him, how it felt to be there in that time and place

if you can get to london then pleeeeaaaase go and see the marilyn monroe exhibition at the national portrait gallery... easily the best exhibition i've seen in years. she was so special and she makes me so sad... truly one of the world's great tortured artists
a ripe nectarine by Loch Eck on the most beautiful day
i'm spending a week where i grew up in south-east england, and a lot of my excitement about going down was because i miss the particulars of how the countryside looks especially in the summer... very lush and verdant and just very very english. but IN FACT the heat waves have made most of the grass very very brown. it's like looking out at fields of wheat, i kind of only half recognise it as the landscape i grew up in. extremely sad thinking that as climate change accelerates more of these effects will kick in!
hi everyone are we all having a nice evening. i had my hair black for ten years and finally i couldn't tolerate it anymore, so a few weeks ago i went to a hairdresser to have them dye it brown and i paid £300 for pretty much zero change in colour (my colleague asked me the day after i had it done when i was going to dye my hair -_-). after this i thought "there's no way i can't do a better job of this myself" so i bleached it myself and dyed it how i wanted it and okay okay. the colour is great the colour is exactly what i wanted. BUT MY CURLS ARE GONE. i mean i have naturally 3a curly hair and it is now it dries pretty much straight. and can i be real with you all i do feel that my life is over

in university i was really obsessed with making ice cream but since going vegan i got out of the habit... but in the last few weeks i've gotten a really good vegan base figured out so i've been getting back into it. and it's so all-consuming. last week i made yeast ice cream (tastes like brioche, probably my all-time favourite ice cream), yesterday i made toasted vanilla, next week i'm thinking wholemeal toast and marmalade, (based on a toast and marmalade ice cream an elder woman gave me at a dance class when i was a child... she was kind of insecure about it being a weird flavour but god it was so good). the thing is i can only really make one per week because i can't eat through it very quickly and it isn't something you can really give away. but hopefully that means i won't burn myself out on it. freeze myself out on it?

speaking of adventurousness... i went on a beautiful big road trip with my friend down the west coast of the US and i have unfortunately been forced to rescind every mean thing i've ever said about america. beautiful beautiful country with enormous apples and enormous trees. and people who are very nice about your english accent if you have one. if you live in the pacific northwest i envy you more than you will ever know

Starla, the yellow-eyed starling. European starling. Jefferson County, Colorado. Photo by Amber Maitrejean
for ten full years of my life i wore black clothes exclusively and i always thought i would do that forever, but in the last eighteen months or so wearing black has become literally intolerable to me... last week i got rid of all my black clothes for good and i will never wear black again! very surprising but very liberating!
this change definitely happened as a result of becoming exponentially happier across the last five years but mostly it's because i've become a very outdoorsy and adventurous and hiking-obsessed person and no longer want to look like the homebound, activity-deprived teenager i used to be. of course it's obvious that your identity affects how you want to dress and present yourself but it's kind of amazing to see changes in your lifestyle and identity manifest so physically. not only do i feel like a different person, i also want that new person to unfold physically
