People don't like to admit it bcs cringe or w/e but Homestuck really did revolutionize the webcomic as a storytelling medium and I am endlessly frustrated that before webcomic artists could really stretch our legs fucking webtoonz swooped in, set a new, more restrictive standard, and then monetized and monopolized the ever living fuck out of the concept of The Webcomic until it drove away anyone who couldn't be a professional quality manga artist for free, and now the only webcomics that actually feel like spiritual successors to Homestuck are so obscure they're basically cult classics that you have to beg people to read.

Like it's just so wild to be in high school and see Homestuck be like "we're using like fifteen different artistic mediums to tell this story bcs we can" and be really fucking inspired by that, only to grow up and see basically every webcomic ever have to conform to One Single Standard or fucking perish.

Actually, I realized my real point here: we all need to make our art weirder. Please make weird art. I want more stuff like Prequel Adventure and 17776 and MyHouse.wad and I want it now. Capitalism thrives on conformity. We must be weird at all costs.

ok so i guess i’m gonna. talk. a little bit about what i’ve been up to? since. idk i have nothing else to share right now haha, editing and re-lettering book 1 of my comic has just become My Life at the moment, uh

Stuff on the left is old, stuff on the right is new.

I just noticed in that last set I forgot a balloon tail, oops, uh.

Anyway, I’m trying to clean this mess up a little bit. Going through these old files has kind of been... a trip. I have a lot more patience for detail now (I was diagnosed with ADHD in March and got medicated and that has made everything... so much easier to deal with) and going through these pages that I built 2+ years ago is... kinda depressing. I can tell by the quality of my own work that I was struggling when I made this. There are a lot of weird, careless mistakes that just scream, “I’m exhausted but I can’t stop,” and it feels nice to go back and fix that. It’s like I’m extending a hand to my past self, if that makes sense. I dunno.

I’m also using Illustrator to do the lettering, instead of Photoshop. So I’ve learned a new program, I guess. Lettering there instead of in PS is... a vast improvement, I have more control over a lot of things and it’s easier to make changes if something needs an adjustment.

I’ve done 10 out of 104 pages so far. I don’t know how long this is gonna take, but I’m trying to take my time with it and do it right.

Four main guys from a project I’m loosely developing in between my current webcomic.

Sevic and Musa are half brothers. They share a dad.

Musa is in his late 20s. Currently crashing on Sevic’s couch after having been kicked out of school.

Sevic is in his late 30s. Works from home as a self-taught freelance illustrator for weirdos online. Plays guitar. Naturally gifted. Hasn’t been outside in years.

Whitley is in his late 20s. Childhood friend of Musa’s. Is in college, works retail. He and his parents are the only ones of his species in the entire region because of reasons.

Tobias is in his late 30s. He’s rich due to inherited wealth. Thinks he’s an artist and musician. Actually just pays people to make stuff and says he made it. Thinks it’s the same thing.

This is my only project at the moment where there are explicitly no humans.

So this was an experiment. I'd been seeing a lot of real media paintings with bright, vibrant underpaintings at the time, and wanted to give that a shot myself digitally.

The original stock photo i painted over to make this was in black and white, so making up colors that worked was a challenge, too. I learned a lot from this piece, and everyone who sees it generally gets a laugh out of it, and that’s always nice. Still very fond of it nearing 2 years later.
