also re: the poem as cage I can't find that post that talks about how meter is bondage for poetry but I do think there's maybe a bit of that involved, especially in Roman elegy. and especially especially in Ovid's Amores where we get elegiac-poet-subjugated-by-Cupid (via metrical restriction), elegiac-poet-subjugated-by-beloved (at the textual level), and beloved-caged-by-elegiac-poet (at the metatextual level)
