The Tangled the Series Masquerade!

Calling all writers and readers! We are excited to announce a new event taking place this Summer within the TTS fandom! We hope that you are all as excited as we are to announce the TTS Masquerade Summer 2026!

What is it?

The TTS Masquerade is inspired by the event hosted by @tua-masked-author, a similar event for The Umbrella Academy fandom. The idea is that authors submit works to an anonymous collection on AO3. Readers then have the opportunity to put on their detective hats and submit guesses. Once guesses are collected, all the works will be revealed. Guesses will be tallied and we will share statistics for each submission and reveal who made the most correct guesses!

We would love encourage more interaction between readers and their favourite tts fanfiction authors. We would love to see you all getting out your magnifying glasses and discussing fanfiction within our community. Overall, the event is about having fun and you can all follow along by following the '#tts masquerade 2026' tag!

You do not need to have previously uploaded to AO3 to participate and readers are equally important. Even if you just want to read and don't want to guess, we hope that you enjoy the event too!

How does it work?

First, we take submissions from authors who wish to participate in the event. Authors will add their works to our anonymous collection on AO3 for readers to read. This will be accompanied by filling out a submission form so that we can keep track of all submissions. Submissions will not be accepted without the accompanying submission form. A link to each submission with a brief summary will be posted on our Tumblr blog.

Once the submissions period has closed, the guessing period will begin. A list of all participating authors will be published along with the Guess Form. Readers will have the opportunity to submit guesses via the Guess Form. Authors may also participate as readers to try and submit guesses. All readers must only submit one form.

Once the guessing period has finished, the collection will be revealed, therefore, revealing all the authors. We will organise all the information from the Guess Form. Within a few days, we will share statistics for each work and reveal which reader made the most correct guesses.

When will it be held?

The event will run between the 10th of August to the 30th of August. Below is a brief timeline of events. You can click on the dates to see what time they will be for you.

Submissions period: 10th of August at 00:01 UTC until 16th August at 23:59 UTC.

Guessing period: 17th of August at 00:01 UTC until the 27th of August 23:59 UTC.

The Reveal: 28th of August at 00:01 UTC.

Statistics: 30th of August 00:01 UTC.

How to make a submission

In order to to submit your work to the event you will need to post your work to AO3, add it to our AO3 collection, and fill out the submission form.

Creating an AO3 Account

Creating an AO3 account requires receiving an invitation. You can request an invitation by entering your email address here. After entering your email address, you will be added to the queue and will receive your invitation once you reach the front. You can track your place in the queue by entering your email address here. Please contact us if you believe your invitation will not arrive until after the submission deadline.

Once you receive your invitation, you will be able to use it to fill out your account information. After doing this, you will receive an email to activate your account. All accounts must be activated within two weeks or they will be automatically deleted. If you do not receive your activation email, you can contact AO3 support by filling out the form at the bottom of this page on AO3's website.

Once your account is activated, you are set!

Posting your submission to AO3

When posting your submission, you must make sure to add it to our collection during the posting process. If you do not do this, you work will not be posted anonymously and your subscribers will be notified of the post, spoiling the mystery! If you plan for your work to be part of a series, please don't add it to one until after the event. This is because the work will appear under the series on your dashboard and everyone will be able to see that you wrote it.

Adding your submission to our collection

You can find our collection here. The collection is Anonymous so works added to it will appear as anonymous until the reveal. Submissions will not appear within the collection until the submission window is open. All submissions must be added to the collection by the 16th of August at 23:59 UTC.

All submissions must follow the submission rules.

To add your own work to our collection:

Select the "Edit" button from the work's page, and scroll down to the "Associations" section.

Enter "TTS Masquerade 2026" in the "Post to Collections / Challenges" field. You can start entering the collection's name, and the autocomplete list will populate with collections you can choose from and out collection should appear as an option.

Select "Post" to apply your changes.

Your submission will not appear in the collection until it has been approved. After it has been approved, it may take a little while to appear due to AO3's caching.

Filling out the Submission Form

Below are a few rules for participating in the masquerade, whether you are an author or a reader. We want the event to run smoothly and to be fun for everyone. These rules have been written for a reason and the aim of them is to make this the best event that it can be! All people who follow the rules are welcome.

Varian and the Seven Kingdoms (concept)

This is an event for Tangled the Series. However, please feel free to write for any of the fandoms above as they make up important parts of out fandom.

Please keep the role of crossovers to a minimum. We want the event to be inclusive to many parts of the fandom so please keep in mind that not everyone will want to read for fandoms they have not previously engaged with. Feel free to use as many fandom tropes as you like!

Rules for Submissions

All submissions must be added to the AO3 collection before the submission deadline.

The submission deadline is the 16th of August at 23:59 UTC. The collection will be closed at this deadline and no more submissions will be accepted.

All submissions must be accompanied by filling out the submission form.

This is so we can keep track of submissions and who has written what. Works will not be accepted into the AO3 collection until the submission form as been received and reviewed. You can fill it out here.

Only a maximum of two submissions per person will be accepted.

This rule is in place to allow readers to be able to read a variety of fics from a variety of authors. It also gives them a better chance to read through and enjoy as many submissions as they would like prior to the guessing deadline. Additional submissions will not be accepted.

Every submission must be above 100 words with a maximum of one submission under 700 words.

As much as we love drabbles, it can be hard to guess who wrote what when there are not many words to guess from. This means that all submissions must be over 100 words. If you submit two submissions, at least one of them must be over 700 words.

Every submission must be a maximum of 10,000 words.

Once the event is over, authors will have the option to continue their works with additional chapters or parts which are over 10,000 words. However, like with the rule only allowing two submissions per person, we want to give readers the opportunity to read through and enjoy as many submissions as they would like prior to the guessing deadline. Original submissions can be as many chapters as you like, as long as they are over 100 words and under 10,000 words.

All submissions must obey AO3's terms of service and Content Policy.

If you have never posted to AO3 before, please take a read of their ToS, Content Policy and FAQ.

Avoid posting your work outside of the AO3 collection prior to the reveal.

In order to allow readers to guess, please avoid posting your work elsewhere until after the reveal. After the reveal, feel free to post your work wherever you like!

Submissions must not be Explicit or contain Smut.

Ships are allowed but in order for the event to be inclusive for as many people as possible, this event will not include works that are explicit or involve smut. Gen, Teen and Up, and Mature submissions are allowed as long as they stick within the rules. All submissions must have a rating.

Harassment and bigotry will not be tolerated.

This event allows anyone who will abide by the rules. Harassment over a particular ship or opinions within the fandom will not be tolerated. Bigotry will also not be tolerated. Anyone found to break this rule will be removed from participating from this event and will be reported directly either to Tumblr Staff or AO3's Policy and Abuse Committee.

Do not us AI to generate submissions.

This is not something we can accurately enforce against and at the moment, AI works are allowed on AO3. However, using AI does not fit within the spirit of the event and ruins the fun for those who are attempting to guess. It is also not fair to those putting time and effort into writing submissions.

Rules for Guessing

All guesses must be submitted before the guessing deadline.

The guessing deadline is the 27th of August at 23:59 UTC. The Guess Form will be closed at this deadline and no more guesses will be accepted.

Fill out the Guess Form to submit your guesses.

This means we can track your guesses and create statistics for each work. It also means we can reveal who made the most correct guesses. The Guess Form will open once the submission deadline has closed. You can fill it out here.

Only fill out the Guess Form once.

You can make as many guesses as you like. However, in order for us to better keep track of guesses, please only fill out the Guess Form once. If the Guess Form is filled out more than once, only the first will be accepted.

Do not submit guesses through comments.

If guesses are submitted through comments, we will not be able to keep track of them. Please only comment on a work to show appreciation for the author.

Harassment and bigotry will not be tolerated.

This event allows anyone who will abide by the rules. Harassment over a particular ship or opinions within the fandom will not be tolerated. Bigotry will also not be tolerated. Anyone found to break this rule will be removed from participating from this event and will be reported directly either to Tumblr Staff or AO3's Policy and Abuse Committee.

How do I submit an entry?

To learn how to submit an entry, please follow these instructions. All submissions must follow the submissions rules.

Can I submit my entry early?

You may submit your entry any time from when the collection is live on AO3. Please note that the collection will be set to Unrevealed until the Submission Period opens. This means submissions will not be visible to readers until then.

How do I submit a guess?

To submit a guess, fill out the Guess Form. All Guesses must be submitted by the 27th of August at 23:59 UTC. All guesses must follow the Guessing Rules.

How do I post Anonymously?

When you add your submission to the AO3 collection, it will automatically be posted anonymously. Make sure you add your submission to the collection as you upload it and not after. This is because the submission will appear under your username until it is added to the collection. As well as this, all your subscribers will receive a notification about the submission. Please do not add your submission to a series until the end of the event. This is because the work will appear under the series on your AO3 dashboard and readers will be able to see that you wrote it.

Am I allowed to lock my work so it is only visible to those with AO3 accounts?

You may post your submission with whatever privacy settings you want. This includes: locking your work to only be visible to those with AO3 accounts, disabling comments, and disabling guest comments.

Am I allowed to reply to comments before the reveal?

Yes, you may. All comments you leave on the work as the author will apparently anonymously.

How do I comment or leave kudos on other people's work without revealing I didn't write it?

Some users may choose to lock their works to only be visible to those with an AO3 account or disable guest comments. However, for those who do not, we can suggest leaving guest comments and kudos, or returning to the submission to share your love once the authors have been revealed. If you don't want to have to continuously sign in and out of your AO3 account, we suggest using your browser's 'incognito' or 'private browsing' mode to leave guest kudos and comments.
