It absolutely infuriates me that Archie and Maxie are not more prominent characters in pokemon as a whole. These two as absolutely SLEPT ON by the fandom and the pokemon company, its a fucking crime. They are probably one of the most well written villains in the series, though donāt get me wrong i know the most recent pokemon games have had amazing villains, but honestly that makes the fact that Archie and Maxie still keep up with these newer characters an even more awesome fact. Yes by the way i am talking about their ORAS counterparts, i am not talking very much about RSE and i have not read the mangas to know how their characters are developed in there (its not fair to compare the games and the manga story wise since the manga is frankly INSANE at some points lol). It breaks my brain that they arent brought up more as being a major tipping point in how pokemon villains can be written. I mean seriously, they were the FIRST of the mainstream villains to actually have a redemption arc, not only that but one that felt natural, that clearly showed their individual priorities and how they both handle facing their mistakes. They are also the first villains to not hate the player, even finding themselves having fun and getting excited to battle you, despite you standing in their way. Their updated ORAS dialogue is flavorful and endearing, but most importantly to me is that it highlights that they are both inherently different. they arent the same person on different sides (like RSEās lack of text differentiation lended to), and they arent just opposites of each other (which i see as a common fandom interpretation of them that hurts me physically). Archie and Maxie are different people with different views, different personalities, different minds, different relationships. they certainly arenāt the same, but they certainly arenāt opposite.
Its amazing that they applied these traits TO BOTH OF THEIR ENTIRE TEAMS. You dont just get āoh its a drink called āmagma colaā in the vending machineā and āoh its a drink called āaqua dewā in the vending machineā type of differences between them, there are interactions with the magma grunts you dont get with the team aqua grunts! There are pieces of world building in the aqua base that dont exist in the magma base! The admins have their own unique relationships to their leaders, relationships that arent the same across teams. And what i love so much about these differences (which is a sentiment is see very few people share with me regarding team aqua and team magma) is that these differences dont immediately make one team better than the other! whenever i see conversations about team magma and aqua devolve into āwhich team was right? which team is better? which team is etc etc etc.?ā it makes me lose my mind because YOU MISSED THE POINT!!!!!!! Ok sorry that sounds really aggressive, im not saying that you cant have a personal preference to either team or think that one leaders idea was smart and the others was idiotic. but i am saying that the whole message of omega ruby and alpha sapphire had to do with balance. team aqua and team magma arent the same, and thats okay. the fact that they can both exist as different organizations and both be a good thing (or both be a bad thing if world destruction is involved) is literally what the game was trying to say the whole time. who knows, maybe this is actually the take that every person has and i am a Fool and a Moron that missed the memo. maybe i am just yelling at an empty alleyway full of crickets while i stand upon my 2ft high soapbox. but if nobody else heard this (or needed this), at least i did. :)
today a kid at work climbing up a tree felt the need to tell his friend āthis tree is for ONLY BOYS and GIRLSā. so obviously his friend was like um that means itās for everyone, to which i responded āsome people arenāt boys or girls!ā and the boy climbing the branch added his hot take of āYEAH! some people are PIRATES.ā
