10 Years of Tsuritama

My weekly Tsuritama rewatch has reached Episode 6 and I need to yell about how BRILLIANT this scene is.

This is the first time in the entire show that Akira integrates into the group on an emotional level - he is being thanked and included and he smiles about it!! Up until here, he's lived in a totally different genre from the others - we've had five episodes of soft friendship and Akira's been completely removed from it, living in his own world.

Which makes this scene feel significant as a viewer, Akira is being swept up into the pace of the show, the pace we have come to expect--- and then it completely pulls the rug out from under us.

For the first time we see the genre Akira's been in the whole time.

Suddenly everything is dark and unsettling and dangerous and Akira reveals he's been armed to kill with gun and combat knife the whole time and-- oh, suddenly how distanced he is makes some sense, suddenly his whole deal seems a little less ridiculous.
