The Hyuga Compound was intended to be grand. Where it was built, centuries before the foundation of Konoha, was declared to be a sacred place where the moonlight would linger. The trees themselves were older than the Hyuga clan, predating the systems and institutions that would become the clan.
Now, the walls of the Compound stood tall against the rest of Konoha that slowly encroached on it throughout the nearly half-century of the village. By the very virtue of the encroachment, the Hyuga were becoming far more involved with the politics of the village. Visits from the Hokage had become much more common place than before, when they were allowed to essentially operate as a near-autonomous clan.
This meeting with the newly instated Yondaime was Hiashi’s first as the Head of the Hyuga. He had been well prepared and trained for their interactions. The Hyuga were to have the upper hand, because they always did – even if it was by less than covert means. The Byakugan makes it difficult for the opposite party to keep anything secret; and secrecy was domination in domestic politics.
The safekeepers of the Compound led Minato through the Compound, to the large courtyard. The tree in the middle was a testament to the strength of the clan, a centuries old oak tree. Through the large doors, opening to a large atrium, with a large emblem of the crest of the Hyuga painted onto the wall dead ahead. The guards continued to guide him down the hallway before stopping at a secluded door.
The Head of the Clan’s office and reception was darkly lit, spare for the candles that were neatly placed at each corner of the table in the center of the room. No windows were along the walls. Hiashi stood as Minato was brought into the room, bowing his head.
“Yondaime Hokage,” he started as he lifted his head back up. “Please, sit wherever is comfortable.”
for @bakisensei
The word of Baki’s arrival to the Hyuga Compound was already spreading. There was no way to be covert here. There were eyes on every inch of the property. Hanabi is hurrying from the Main Household to the Gates, playfully running barefoot through the courtyard. She had spotted him while training with her father. And with a short declaration of a break, she was off.
Hanabi came to a stop in front of Baki with a smile on her face. He looked just as Nana had described him and from what Hanabi pictured while reading her diary. The distinctive face covering helped. She looked him up and down with a quick glance.
She gave a small, formal bow of her head. She lifted her chin up again, giving him a smile. “I am Hyuga Hanabi. And you are--?”

as my final act of love, I will swallow every "please stay" and turn it into silence so you don't feel trapped by my ache
⋆ · 𖤓 · ⋆ 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐕𝐘 𝐈𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐍 ··· a collection of birthrights and betrayals, the throne that costs more than it gives, love tangled up in the question of who is fit to rule. genre: drama, angst, romance, court intrigue.
I was born to inherit this. From my first breath, it was meant to be mine.
You are not the heir my father chose, whatever claim you may believe yourself to possess.
The council shall convene at dawn, and there decide what is to become of me.
I have been schooled since infancy to sit that throne. No one thought to teach me how lonely it would be.
You are but a second son. By rights, that ought to mean little. Here, it means all.
The succession runs in my blood, heedless of my wishes. I have never once been granted a choice in any of it.
I would surrender my claim for you.
You look upon that throne as though it were a cage. Of late, I have begun to see the bars as well.
The court has already begun to choose its banners. I must know beneath which one you mean to stand.
You possess the better claim to this crown, and we both know it, though the court may choke upon the truth.
The regency ends when I come of age next spring. I cannot say whether I am prepared for what follows.
My sister gathers allies in the north and calls men to her banners. I do not think she means to wait for the old king to die in his own bed.
I would trade this birthright for a single year lived as any common soul might live.
The council would have me wed before autumn’s end, that the succession might be secured. Not one among them has thought to ask whom I would choose.
I watched my father die with his fingers still closed around a power he no longer possessed the strength to wield.
You would rule with greater kindness than any of us.
The crown has passed over me and settled upon my cousin’s brow. I have spent my whole life preparing for a future that is mine no longer.
I do not desire the throne. I desire only the right to refuse it, and even that has been denied me.
You were raised in exile, waiting upon a claim that might never ripen. I do not know how the waiting has not broken you.
I have inherited a war I did not begin and a crown I am not certain I have earned.
You would burn the realm to ash before you saw it fall into unworthy hands. I have begun to wonder whether mine are such hands.
The laws of succession favor the eldest son. I had the ill fortune to be born a daughter, and thus wrongly born in the eyes of the crown.
You ask whether I desire this. No one has asked me such a thing in all my life. I find I do not know how to answer.
The realm requires a strong hand upon the throne. I do not know that mine is strong enough. Tell me that it is, even should you have to lie.
You would have made a good queen. I think upon that more often than I should, now that the crown has fallen to me instead.
The ancient laws decree that the crown must pass through blood alone. I fear that law has destroyed far more of this family than it ever preserved.
You stood beside me at my coronation when half the court wished you cast out. I shall remember it until my dying day.
This quarrel over the succession has already claimed two lives. I fear it has not yet taken its full due.
I never wished to rule. I wished only to be free. No one born to this house has ever been permitted both.
You would surrender everything for me. I begin to understand that you count your claim among those sacrifices.
I have worn this crown for but a single day, and already I understand how it broke my father.
You are the rightful heir, and every soul in this chamber knows it, even those who would rather bite out their tongues than confess it.
The throne was never meant to be mine. Perhaps that is the very thing that might set me free of it.
You once told me that power is not inherited, but seized. I did not understand you until I watched my brother reach for mine.
The council fears the ruler I may yet become. On certain days, I find that I fear them as well.
I would sooner lay down my crown than become the sort of monarch my father was.
I inherited this throne, but not the certainty that I possess the wisdom to rule from it.

“is this what you wanted?”
Hiashi was a man of dignity. Of grace. Poise was drilled into Hyuga children at a young age, especially those of the Main Branch. He learned how to walk with his head upright, shoulders back, and feet taking graceful steps. Part of their upbringing was learning how to walk blindfolded with the appearance of effortless movements through the streets; showing off their Byakugan and its ability to see through.
But even with the Byakugan, there were things that Hiashi could not see. His own desires, his own wants, the will of himself. The role as Head of the Hyuga Clan was a heavy title to carry. The oldest, most powerful clan in the Village, that predated its establishment by centuries. There was blood of legendary gods apparently flowing in his veins. How much Hiashi believed in that was inconsequential – but he would repeat the learned mythology to those who must hear it.
But the man in front of him – a clanless son of Konoha – did not care about the blood in his veins, the connection to the moon, the centuries of ritualistic denial of his wants. Hyuga were raised to look down on outsiders. Even their own blood. Their fates had been decided long before they were born. There were the ones who had and the ones who did not.
Gai was supposed to be one of the ones who did not.
Hiashi was supposed to be the chosen one of the Hyuga, to rise to the challenge of leading it and its continuation of history.
It was, in an odd way, refreshing to have a non-clan shinobi confront him. It was rare that they would do such a thing. While walking in the streets, some people would bow their heads. Some averted their eyes. Some stared directly at him. The Hyuga name, the robes, and the eyes were an immediate connotation of power.
But Gai was in his personal office, tucked away in the privacy of the family’s wing of the Compound. A highly unusual event in the otherwise neatly organized and predictable environment. Not a single thing was out of place, not even the pens on his desk.
Hiashi looked at him from behind his desk. Moonlight illuminating the room, his eyes reflecting it back.
“No. None of this is what I wanted,” Hiashi sighed, a hand going to his forehead to pinch the bridge of his nose. “As I’m sure you’re aware, I’ve never been a particularly… adventurous man. That goes against everything it means to be a Hyuga.”
And go against it, he had.
