But seriously, does anyone have a clear, consistent definition of what a ramrod on a cattle drive does? The show clearly takes some liberties; I've read online (without cited sources) that the trail boss usually scouts ahead himself (so they didn't strictly need Pete/Clay in the show), and my impression is that the ramrod is basically a foreman/second-in-command to the trail boss, directly managing the crew on the trail boss's behalf, but we all know how often Favor and Rowdy wander off together, leaving neither one directly in charge of the men in their absence.

At the same time, Charles Marquis Warren has spoken about the pains he took to ground Rawhide in real sources, e.g., the diary of a real trail boss of the period (magazine interview transcript here). So, at least in the early seasons, they were trying to depict a cattle drive believably, so it's valuable to see how the characters themselves understood their jobs. To wit: in the introduction to Incident of the Day of the Dead, Rowdy does the customary (for early seasons) spoken introduction instead of Favor, describing the crew and their responsibilities on the drive; when it comes to himself, Rowdy says that the ramrod has no chores of his own and has to be ready and willing to take over anyone else's.

I know it was mentioned in his biography, but it really is hilarious to see an actual clipping of the Triple-Billing of Sheb Wooley, Ben Colder, and Pete Nolan(d?)
