Caleb Hammond & Kayla Romberger Brooklyn, NY and Philadelphia, PA Room 205

Caleb Hammond is a theater and visual artist. Some works: directing Anna Kohler's MYTHO?...or the lure of wildness, premiering in NY in 2016. The Elegies, an ongoing series of video installations in collaboration with Japan-based glass artist Sean Salström. The Irresistible, adapted from Ibsen and Euripides at Immersive Gallery in Williamsburg; Exposure, a dance video screened at Norte Dance Festival in Porto, Portugal; a related dance performance: Live Exposure, presented by TSA and Transmitter galleries in Bushwick. Other works written and directed by Hammond have been presented at Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica; HERE Arts, NYC; The Incubator at St. Marks Church, NYC; The New Haven International Festival of Arts and Ideas;  UndergroundZero Festival, NYC; Divaldo Kampa in Prague, and ATA gallery in San Francisco. As an actor he has worked with John Jesurun, Jay Scheib, Shannon Sindelar and Hal Hartley. He has performed at The Kitchen, The Public Theater and PS122, Dixon Place and Surf Reality in NY; Maison des Arts, Paris Festival in Paris, The National Theater of Hungary, Budapest and The ICA Boston.  His visual art as been exhibited at the Nishida Art Museum, Toyama Japan; Gallery 825, Los Angeles; The Copley Society, Boston; Visual Research, New Haven; Real Art Ways, Hartford and Vaudeville Park, NYC. Hammond is a lecturer in the MIT Theater Arts department, has taught theater and art at Eugene Lang College (The New School), Carnegie Mellon University and the Hartford Art School. He has been a guest lecturer at Colgate University, Kingswood-Oxford and Toyama Glass Institute in Japan.

Kayla Romberger is an artist, designer, and writer who lives and works in Philadelphia. She has worked as both a participant and exponent for the arts for more than a decade, cutting her teeth in the museum world as programming intern for the Whitney Museum of American Art and ICA Philadelphia. Her curatorial projects include the artist-writer collaborative exhibition MFA+MFA at 2435, Topophilia at Work Detroit, and City/Drift at Kunsthalle Detroit.

Exhibitions of her own work include the 4th Gwangju Design Biennale (Gwangju, South Korea), BASE Beijing, MOCAD (Detroit), the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology (Ann Arbor), and the NY Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1 (New York). She holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and teaches at the University of Pennsylvania.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia, PA Room 119

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia is an artist-run and artist-curated exhibition space located at 319A North 11th Street. We are part of the Tiger Strikes Asteroid network along with other independently-run spaces located in New York and Los Angeles. TSA Philadelphia’s mission is to foster connections between the Philadelphia art scene and the global art community. We focus on bringing together a diverse mix of emerging and mid-career artists from Philadelphia and beyond through exhibitions and curatorial opportunities. Our exhibitions have been featured in numerous print and online publications including the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Art Blog, Title Magazine, and Two Coats of Paint. Projects outside our regular exhibition schedule have included 2013’s Citywide initiative, Tiger Strikes Museum at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the 2014 (e)merge Art Fair in Washington, DC. 

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia will be presenting a series of suitcases and travel related products in an exhibition entitled Baggage Check. Each suitcase, produced by the individual members of TSA Philly especially for “ARTIST-RUN” @ OCEAN TERRACE HOTEL, will operate as its own contained installation evoking the artists' unique tastes and methodologies.  Riffing on notions of travel, a mythological Miami, and distribution of art and information, Bag Check offers a playful, yet luxurious get-away from the hustle and bustle of your run-of-the-mill global art market exhibition experience.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Brooklyn, NY Room 218

TSA New York is an artist-run, artist-curated exhibition space located in Bushwick, Brooklyn and part of the Tiger Strikes Asteroid network of artist-run spaces. TSA New York seeks to invite a dialogue between an eclectic mix of artists and curatorial visions with a focus on emerging artists from New York and beyond. Our exhibitions have been featured in numerous print and online publications including L Magazine, Bushwick Daily, Artinfo, Artnet News, Beautiful Decay, and the New York Times.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present Once Removed, a four-person installation at Artist Run, Satellite Miami. In the temporal space of room 218 are four propositions for the manipulation of the landscape genre.

Rachael Gorchov, Tai Yin Ho, Jackie Hoving, and Naomi Reis understand the spectacle of landscape as an illusionistic experience, a fiction that is amplified when one terrain is lifted and dropped into another. Various forms of representation become a starting point for material intervention.

Naomi Reis considers notions of Landscape as a language borrowed, pieced together and reconfigured to form a multi-layered sense of place. The wall murals of Jackie Hoving embody a tension between a sort of agrarian nostalgia and urban defacement, bringing the forest inside as an object to tag, tear up, and deface. Tai Yin Ho situates the imagined results of cultural and economic evaluation onto constructed landscapes and sculptural installation, while Rachael Gorchov pulls the image of the landscape off the wall in high relief, inviting us into a sculptural space to view her torqued illusions.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Los Angeles, CA Room 118

Tiger Strikes Asteroid is an artist-run and artist-curated exhibition space in downtown Los Angeles. We are part of the Tiger Strikes Asteroid network along with other independently-run spaces located in New York and Philadelphia..  TSA LA’s mission is to foster connections between the Los Angeles art scene and the broader art conversation.  We focus on bringing together a mix of emerging and mid-career artists from Los Angeles and beyond.

We, The Herman's Messengers, are an ad-hock committee seeking to establish a permanent physical monument dedicated to celebrating of the creative spirit of Pee Wee Herman. The Rubens center for justice will be the monument's twin. Working in tandem with The Herman's Messengers they will utilize cultural influence, legal and extra-legal means to protect the unusual, the special,the soft, the loose, the wrong and the bizarre from extinction.

Christopher Stout Gallery, New York Brooklyn, NY Room 111

Christopher Stout Gallery, New York (CSG/NY) is a gallery located at 299 Meserole Street in Bushwick, Brooklyn; showing subversive and difficult work by NYC artists.  

CSG/NY is an evolution of visual art program of Bushwick Art Crit Group and run by the same leadership as a separate for-profit space.

Transmitter Brooklyn, NY Room 104

Transmitter is a collaborative curatorial initiative based out of Brooklyn New York, focusing on programming that is multidisciplinary, international and experimental.  The Gallery was founded in 2014 by Rob de Oude, Carl Gunhouse, Sara Jones, Rod Malin, Tom Marquet and Mel Prest.

Transmitter will present an installation featuring a video projection and drawings by Gonzalo Feunmayor.

SOIL Seattle, WA Room 105

Located in Seattle, WA and founded in 1995, SOIL is a unique nonprofit gallery space established, supported and operated by local artists. SOIL exists as an alternative venue for artists to exhibit, develop, and advance work in diverse media and content. The monthly exhibition program is chosen through open calls to curators and artists. SOIL operates in a hybrid space between the commercial gallery and museum contexts, often providing the first professional exposure for emerging artists.

SOIL is pleased to present Metamodern, an installation of work created by artists Jana Brevick, Chris Buening, Paul Komada, Margie Livingston, and Nicholas Nyland. The organizing principle is an exploration of the so-called metamodern sensibility of informed naivety and pragmatic idealism often characterized by cultural responses to recent global events such as climate change, the financial crisis, political instability, and the digital revolution. The installation will frame a post-ideological condition that stresses engagement, affect, and storytelling. Each of the artists included approach this through diverse media. For example, Paul Komada uses knitted panels inserted into canvas or as larger wall hangings to complicate and question the notion of the artist’s hand and how to represent the political inequalities facing our country.

SEDIMENT Richmond, VA Room 201

Initiated in late 2013, SEDIMENT is an artist-run gallery and storefront located in Richmond, Virginia. SEDIMENT organizes gallery exhibitions, experimental music events, workshops, and lectures that feature the work of contemporary visual and performing artists whose work embraces interdisciplinary, multimedia and collaborative approaches to creative production.

Gravity Assist features eight sound pieces from SEDIMENT's recent To: Pluto sound compilation–made in response to the recent fly-by event of NASA’s spacecraft, New Horizons, whose primary target was the outer dwarf planet Pluto. The sound pieces speak to relationships with Pluto or other planetary bodies including our own, to the human longing that comes with distant and detached explorations of intangible objects, as well as the role of speculation and scientific discovery in defining what is within or without our physical world and imagination. To address the time durations of New Horizon’s journey from Earth to Pluto of nine years, five months, and twenty-five days, all audio tracks are nine minutes and five seconds in length.

For SEDIMENT’s installation at Artist-Run, eight Richmond-based visual artists were selected to create sculptural works in response to one selected audio track curated from the To: Pluto compilation. Visual artists include Alex Artz, Paloma Barhaugh-Bordas, Nicole Killian, Christopher Mahonski, Jordan Marty, Theo Mullen, Matthew Shelton, Evana Roman. Sound works by Cecilia, Vitiello/Donne/The OO-Ray, Simon Serc, Toner War, Elizabeth Williams/Christian Meudt, IGM, David Moré, Gary Rouzer.

pump project Austin, TX Room 217

Pump Project is a non profit artist run gallery and studio complex in east Austin focused on providing resources to contemporary artists. The converted warehouse has had a significant impact on the growing Austin art scene over the last ten years, providing more than 30 subsidized artist’s spaces and taking part in an increasingly relevant contemporary art discourse within the broader community through an exhibition program focused on experimental work. In doing so, Pump Project is widely recognized as one of the pillars of the Austin art community, and a safe haven for artists and artworks whose resonances can be undervalued by the at times conservative commercial interests of more profit inclined sector of visual art in Austin.

pump project will present an installation featuring works by Elizabeth McDonald and Frank Wick. Frank Wick is a prolific painter and sculptor producing huge volumes of faux­naive paintings atop pages sliced from magazines or liberated from online publications. These works act within the realm of consumer culture, but against conservative notions of beauty and visual harmony. Elizabeth Mcdonald is an artist recognized for her extensive research­based exhibitions incorporating painting, sculpture, and alternative media. Her practice largely explores ritual, specifically the unacknowledged rituals that nonetheless pervade daily life and organize otherwise unruly impulse and desire.

Julie Torres | Art in America Brooklyn, NY Room 214

Julie Torres is a Brooklyn based painter and curator, specializing in community-expanding projects and frequent collaborations with likeminded artists.

ART IN AMERICA assembles a constellation of artwork from across the US, featuring one small work per artist, representing every state + Puerto Rico. This installation acts as a literal map of activity, documenting the current conversation of and about art-making taking place across the country.

Jess Perlitz Portland, OR Lobby

Jess Perlitz will present an installation dealing with heterotopia, a geographical term used to describe spaces that are actually non-spaces. Using the material language of celebration and comfort, Perlitz will create the shell of presence. White hotel pillow cases will become masks filling much of the floor. Overhead, colorful string pennant flags turned face-like will traverse the space.

Hidden Dog Chicago, IL Room 120

Hidden Dog is a collaborative gallery and event project aimed at bringing high quality, alter- native content to the Chicago Arts community. Hidden Dog was named a top five new Chicago gallery project by Newcity Art in 2014. Our gallery programming is focused on material studies, contemporary forms, and multi-generational conversation. Hidden Dog has also launched a virtual gallery in which digital files are sold in limited runs.

Hidden Dog will present Night Club, an installation by Leander Capuozzo. The installation will focus on the space between the virtual and the nonvirtual, consisting of two paintings utilizing projection as a surface element. By placing the audience both around and between the projectors and the surfaces of the paintings, the audience obstructs the projected image and reveals the image painted on the canvas. When the projection is not blocked, the projected image melds with the painted image, creating the full image.

Bb Baltimore, MD Room 109

“Bb” is an artist-run interdisciplinary space located in Baltimore’s Bromo Arts District and founded in November 2014. Primarily focused on providing free lectures, workshops, and events to the public, Bb simultaneously functions as a gallery, lecture hall, and social space. Regular programming such as Drawing Night occurs biweekly to provide a platform for communal art-making, conversation, and food, while exhibitions respond to the architectural elements of the space left over from the storefront’s history as a tailor and campaign office. In 10 months of programming, bb has collaborated with Baltimore artists as well as with nationally and internationally exhibiting artists.

Bb’s installation will involve subtle alterations to the domestic infrastructure of the room. This will involve changes to the outlets, light switch, and window along with the inclusion of some smaller, discrete art objects responding to the space.

AUTOMAT Philadelphia, PA Room 103

AUTOMAT is a curatorial collective of seven Philadelphia-based artists whose mission is to dispense artistic sustenance. We process, package and display for your convenience. Since we opened our doors in April 2015, we have focused on creating opportunities for emerging and experimental artists in the Mid-Atlantic region. We facilitate cross-disciplinary conversation and contribute to the exciting art community in Philadelphia’s Loft district.

AUTOMAT will present Break Room. This installation houses a vending machine filled with low cost, nutrient­rich art­snacks, an air conditioner to keep you cool, and some simple break room decor. There is even a squishy­foam, non­slip floor mat for safe traversal through the space. Break Room will be a side room where guests can stop in to grab their quick bites, pick up some brochures and tour guides, while taking a minute to perk up.

Art F City Brooklyn, NY Room 221

Art F City is one of the leading independent art criticism sources in New York City. We have been working to diversify our nonprofit organization's mission to include expanded programing such as our recent Stay in New York conference on affordable housing and workspaces at the Queens Museum, curating an upcoming digital art exhibition with RISD, and opening a project space in Brooklyn: Fine Art Gallery. We envision this fair as the "coming out" event for Fine Art Gallery before we open our brick-and-mortar location in 2016.

Art F City will present F.A.G. Bar, a pop-up gay bar in South Beach, which responds to the displacement of many historically queer communities through gentrification.  F.A.G. Bar will pay homage to the gay bar as a social space that blends between the real with an interactive online component. Art F City will be showcasing work from artists around the country who deal with the demise of gay bars, gentrification in queer communities, and the identities one presents cruising online or participating in nightlife.
