IT SHOULD BE A SIMPLE TASK, repairing a friendship with such a longevity that’s rarely achieved, but that would mean knowing how to do so, and despite the image of perfection that he has managed to sell, that’s one area rom will always lack in. ( among others, many of which are applicable here as well. ) guilt weighs down on him every time they see one another, a reminder of his cowardice and how easily he succumbs to pressure from those who now rarely offer him so much as a text on evenings like this. he likes to think that he’s changed, but in a way, his interactions with violet thus far prove that he has a long way to go. instead of facing the root of their falling out, he opted to ask her to this instead, a metaphorical band - aid that barely covers a third of the wound’s surface. maybe if they go on like this, everything that he did wrong will become undone, and his method of avoiding will once again prove itself as a perfectly viable way of approaching things. he’s running his fingers over the necklace that sits neatly on his collarbone, toying with it out of habit. when violet breaks the brief moment of silence between them, his hand drops to his side, eventually being shoved in the pocket of his pants. “ lots of steroids, yeah, ” rom mutters in response. he leans in in a similar manner, gaze still set on the scene in front of them, a solid attempt at being discreet. her added comment makes him grin, stifling a laugh that makes itself known as a short - lived exhale. a pause follows then, as though he’s carefully considering her question, hesitating. “ i hope he is, for my sake… ” he sucks in air through his teeth, a performance of his own. “ i can’t have you going home thinking i’m not cool. ” then comes another warm smile, eyes glancing over at her and settling onto her features. “ what do we think so far? try not to make me too sad, ” he adds playfully, words as light as always.

things might be easier if violet was the type of person to be open about the way she felt. truthfully , communication could have saved her from at least half the heartbreak with rom and the unraveling of what she’d previously considered to be their life long friendship. at first suppressing her emotions was a survival tactic , something she’d learned was necessary when family drama became news headlines , when she couldn’t go a day without her last name earning her dirty looks and backhanded comments. keeping things inside meant no one having access to the vulnerable parts of herself , because no upper east side vulture deserved to see the scared teenage girl who’d lost more than just status and money , but a father and mother too. when rom had first started to pull away and keep his distance , she should have said something. anything. but she was marked , haunted by the idea that people are never as permanent as you think , because if she could lose her family then what was stopping the universe from taking a friend ? it was easier to let him slip away without any action on her end. she could convince herself that it was destined , that the rift was bound to happen without the added misery of having her confess some personal thing like how she really felt about him , or how much she needed him then , and losing him anyway.

when they were reunited again in toronto , violet knew it would have been an apt opportunity to finally unpack all the hurt , all the resentment , the regret she’d harbored over the years. and she likes to think she eventually would have brought it all up before she accidentally rang his love alarm , but really that’s all a big excuse. the truth was simple ––––– honesty terrifies her , a statement made all the more complicated by the fact that the grin rom gives her makes violet want to abandon all pretenses. what did she think ? she turns his question over in her head. that she was happy to be there. not because of the exclusivity of the event , or because she might see a celebrity up close , but because she got to spend the entire night trying to get him to keep looking at her the way he was then. “ hmm , ” she hums , looking away from him as if to survey her surroundings. “ there’s a pleasant lack of old ladies on the historical society at this party , so that’s a nice change. and maybe if you get me a fancy glass of something that’s not champagne i’d be willing to admit badge club isn’t that bad. ” violet turns her gaze back towards him , dark eyes sparkling with the amusement she tries her best to keep from making her smile , although she can’t quite stop the curve of her painted lips as she teases him. “ i don’t know how to break this to you , i mean seriously this is kind of awkward , ” violet trails on , a deep breath following her words as she gears up for her big confession. “ i already go home everyday and think you’re not cool. that’s actually exactly what i think about before i go to sleep , just a little confidence boost thing for me you know ? like wow thank god i’m not that guy. ”

his laugh is stifled upon violet’s explosive reaction, her hand tightly pressed against his mouth preventing him to say anything else. he’s surprised her hand could reach up so far in the first place. there’s no notion of protest as he allows her to pull him to whatever vacant area so she can do her usual round of empty threats targeted at him. “i’ll kill you right here.” he mocks in a childish tone. “no one asked you to catch feelings.” he rolls his eyes, leaning against the wall. “what are you, ten?” he scoffs. “running around the playground scared your crush isn’t going to like you back?” he feels as if his condescending tone toward her is warranted. violet had been deliberately ignoring him for the past few weeks and it hasn’t sat well with him. her lack of communication and constant lashes of frustration at him were becoming exhausting.

she’s dumbfounded at the words that keep coming out of his mouth , too busy being offended to stop and think if maybe some of the comments were warranted. “ oh i’m ten ? ” violet mimics , her tone accusatory as crosses her arms over her chest. “ you’re the one who keeps bring that stupid day up. ” she’d been so riled up when she’d dragged nathan into the corner , like she’d been gearing up for a full on fight , ready to tackle him if it meant silencing him. so maybe she was being just the tiniest bit childish ––––– what did it matter ? he was the one being nosy and mean over something she thought it clearly showed she was embarrassed about. “ and just for your information , ” violet adds after a moment of silence , although he hadn’t asked. “ i don’t have a crush. ” a blatant lie , of course , but she’d rather be forced into mingling with the most vapid members of the badge club for ten hours straight than admit the truth , especially to nathan.

the night had barely even begun , and violet was already sure it would go down in history as one of her dumbest decisions of the year. there was nothing inherently wrong with attending an exclusive love alarm badge club new year’s eve party. there wasn’t even anything wrong with going as someone’s date ––––– unless said date was the one guy in all of toronto she happened to share a long and complicated past with. when rom had invited her , she’d promised herself she wouldn’t overthink it. the word date obviously meant nothing more than companion for the night. they were just old friends trying to remember how to be friends again , really , it didn’t have to be harder than that. but one glimpse at him all dressed up and she could feel the logic exit her brain , like it was oozing out through her ears then evaporating into a little heart shaped cloud above her head. to say she was feeling stupid would be an understatement. violet felt about as savvy as a seven year old , or maybe exactly how she used to feel when they were in high school and he’d laugh at one of her jokes that really weren’t even all that funny.

she’s hyper aware of the little things when she’s with him , like how the backless black dress she’d opted to wear was just a scrap of fabric too long for her tiny frame even in her heels , or how it felt like every other person was staring at her as if to say how are you here with him ? she hated it , how completely ridiculous her thoughts could get. this having feelings bullshit was definitely overrated. focus , vi. there was no point in ruining something before it even started just because she was too in her head to act normal. we’re friends. she could do friends. “ this is like ... private school in manhattan prom on steroids, ” she finally muses, leaning closer like what she was saying was grounds for conspiring. and in a way it was natural, gossiping like this was just another fancy event in a long line of charity galas and cotillions they’d attended together , except this time she didn’t belong to that world anymore. “ so tell me the truth — is harry styles really performing or is that just a lie to make the badge club look way cooler than it is ? ” violet teases , a grin chasing her words.

great, another vapid event with primarily badge club members. he puts on a friendly face, using his customer service voice when talking to high execs and other important people. it’s a part of his job description, to slightly suck up to the rich and to the famous. and despite reaching the part of his career where people know him well enough from other events similar to this one, he continues acting as his fake social self for them to continue hiring him. as he’s switching lenses, he spots violet not too far away, noticing her gaze has been intently fixated on a certain someone. he rolls his eyes knowing it is without even looking at the general direction. yeah, they haven’t spoken in a few weeks because violet decided to act out which resulted him being ignored by her for some odd reason, when it actuality it should and would make more sense if it was the other way around. he stands behind her and she doesn’t notice. and after a few seconds he says, “why don’t you go ring his alarm again?” — ( @trueslove· )

she really hated these things ––––– the superficial laughter and meaninglessness conversations , the ridiculously tiny appetizers being offered along with the overpriced champagne , the way she couldn’t go two minutes without hearing some badge club member bring up love alarm. it all reminded violet so much of the countless galas and events her mother used to drag her to growing up except instead of being in a room with a bunch of snobby old rich people , she was surrounded by ridiculously attractive young people instead. despite all the eye candy she really only cared about one person in attendance. in between the polite smiles and thank you’s she offered to the people congratulating her for a job well done , she found herself throwing edward from twilight worthy longing stares across the room. that was , of course , until she was rudely interrupted. she nearly jumps when nathan creeps up behind her , although it’s his words that really get her heart pounding. violet whips her head around checking to see if anyone heard him before she swiftly places her hand over his mouth , literally silencing him. “ — are you crazy ? ” she hisses , attempting to drag him backwards so no one around them notices what’s going on. “ seriously i’ll kill you right here , ” violet states before slowly dropping her hand , dark eyes narrowed as she watches to see if nathan’s going to say anything about that incident again.
