What They Are An enol is formed when a ketone tautomerizes, or interconverts, from a compound that has an O=C double bond, to one that has a C=C double bond. The two forms exist in equilibrium with each other. An enolate is an enol that carries a charge; typically the enolate is the deprotonated form of the enol (as shown).

Why they’re cool Many reactions involve an enol or enolate intermediate. These include:

Halogenation (including the haloform reaction)

Alkylation

Condensations (including the Aldol, Claisen, and Dieckmann reactions)

Mannich reaction

Michael reaction
