living next to lee yechan was surely a blessing in disguise… or at least that's what your mom had said when you complained about him for the fifth time that day.

ever since the day you had met the chubby cheeked boy in the yard of your new house, your mother had been absolutely charmed by him and his stupidly high pitched voice. however, you didn’t see the appeal.

you did at first, when he walked up to the truck as you did your best to help your parents take everything out. he had chubby cheeks, vibrant obsidian eyes and an annoyingly charming smile that had made your little seven year old heart beat out of your chest just to beat all the way back in when he walked right past you, bee lining towards your older brother and ignoring your very audible “hello”.

it was hard to deal with the annoying little pest after that, because he had apparently fallen utterly in love with sumin, who had taken a liking to the younger boy immediately (or to his own older brother, minjae). he was always at your house, knocking at your door and looking for him, not you, to invite him to ride bikes with the other boys in the neighbourhood. and although your entire family had laughed at you when you mentioned it at dinner, you were sure he had resorted to that plan because he had somehow found out you had never learnt how to get onto that demonic murder machine… or a bike, as some would call it.

living next to lee yechan was a blessing in disguise… or at least that’s what your brother had said to you when you house sitted for his family.

yechan’s family had gone on vacation to the coast for two days, and his parents had trusted you and your brother to feed their cats with the additional payment of using their giant tv and their playstation whenever you wanted. those words would have gotten any kid rushing to feed animals, but it was specially incredible for you. at almost ten years old and at the peak of your need to show the clear superiority you had over every single boy alive, lee yechan was your main victim. and what would hurt the boy more than losing to a girl on a video game? you had to end him.

so that’s exactly what you were doing, eyebrows furrowed in concentration as you tried to beat yechan’s high score with your own. 

“just accept that it isn't going to happen” sumin teased as he watched you, poking at your side as an attempt to break your concentration.

“it will, i have to let him know i'm better than him,” you groaned as you swatted his hand away. he didn’t understand that this wasn’t something you wanted, but something you needed. maybe if you hurt his ego enough he would stop treating you like a vulnerable little girl.

“is it because you have a crush o– ouch!” sumin groaned as you pinched his arm, interrupting his incredibly stupid, dumb, offensive words without looking away from the screen.

living next to lee yechan was a blessing in disguise… or that’s what your best friend told you when you rolled your eyes every time he spoke.

you sat with your friends at lunch time, a little too close for your liking to where yechan and your brother sat with their friends. yechan’s voice boomed loudly through the entire cafeteria, making your ears feel like bleeding from the annoying noise. 

your friends were well acquainted with your disliking for the boy by now, and they found it absolutely hilarious how much he annoyed you by simply breathing.

“at least you get to see minjae and them every day, they talk to you too” one of them sighed dramatically as she looked over to where yechan’s older brother sat, seemingly being teased by yujun and seeun. you couldn’t help but smile fondly at the sight, heart fluttering at yujun’s smile. that until your thoughts were interrupted by a high pitched, broken scream coming from the gremlin himself.

“i guess, he ruins all of it though” you rolled your eyes, trying to go back to your meal and tune out the incessant yelling coming from the boys’ table.

“maybe he has a crush on you,” the other one suggested, making you look at her in horror before making an exaggerated gagging gesture, earning a loud laugh from everyone.

growing up next to lee yechan was a blessing in disguise… or at least that’s what you tried to tell yourself over and over again as you heard his incessant yapping from your place on your couch.

in all honesty, spending your birthday listening to your friend flirt with the boy you disliked most in the world wasn’t what you had planned. all you wanted was to have some friends over, eat cake and call it a day, but of course he had to ruin that.

well, to be fair, he wasn’t necessarily doing anything wrong. you had begrudgingly invited him when you had told everyone else, knowing that it would just be plain mean if you didn’t. now the thought of being mean didn’t feel too heavy on your heart as you heard your friend giggle over something he had said, rolling your eyes because he was not that funny.

you excused yourself before leaving to the kitchen, needing to have a second to yourself before you completely ruined your own birthday. you didn’t understand why it was bothering you so much. it surely was because you had spent a great part of your life complaining about him and you would’ve thought your friend knew better. it was surely because that was supposed to be you flirting with yujun, not them. it was surely not because you didn’t like other girls flirting with someone who was yours.

wait… what?

“ynnie?” you heard a familiar voice call out, lifting your sight to catch yujun’s, a soft smile placed on his beautiful lips. “everything okay?”

“yeah, i just needed a minute” you smiled politely, trying not to show your clear discomfort. he was the one that mattered today, not your giggly friend, not stupid yechan, him. 

“did it have anything to do with your friend and yechan over there?” the boy asked, walking closer to you as your eyes widened.

“god, no, not at all” you tried to defend quickly, shaking your head nervously.

“you sure about that?” he asked, and the way his lips quirked up slightly showed you that he knew something even you didn’t, and it was terrifying.

“no” you let yourself whisper without a thought, a sigh escaping your lips.

yujun smiled softly and ruffled your hair before extending his hand to you. “he asked me to come check on you, come on or he might get worried.” 

for the millionth time, your heart raced at yujun’s words. for the first time, it wasn’t because of him.

living next to lee yechan was a blessing in disguise… or at least that’s what you thought as you relaxed on a lounge chair under the blazing sun.

just two days after the most stressful exam week of your life, you found yourself resting next to a giant pool in the most gorgeous house you had ever been to. all of your brother’s friends had planned to take a trip to a villa near the coast to begin your summer on the best note possible, and with your year old status as yujun’s best friend – and half of your life savings –, you had made it too.

your bathing suit clinged to your body, still damp from your previous adventure in the pool as you sunbathed, embracing the heat of the climate and allowing yourself to let go. let go from the stress of highschool, let go from the worries that waited for you at home, and most importantly; let go of your big, fat crush on yechan. however, he wasn’t going to stand for that. even when he had no idea that you had any feelings for him other than pure annoyance, he seemed to have a constant need to keep himself occupying your head.

your eyes snapped open when you felt two arms hook themselves on your middle, lifting you up with a freakish amount of strength and running straight for the pool. you didn’t even have time to scream, holding your breath as you made impact with the water, shivers exploding on your skin as the cold temperature collided with the warmth of your body. you swam up as fast as you could, emerging ready to slap the shit out of whoever had decided it was a good idea to disturb you like that, the urge to do so only amplifying as you were met with a cackling yechan moving his wet hair away from his face.

“you asshole!” you exclaimed, pushing his shoulder as he continued to laugh.

“im sorry, you just looked so peaceful and i had to disturb you, it's the law” he laughed loudly, and you did your best to ignore the pounding of your heart as you watched his beautiful smile.

“you just cannot see me enjoying myself, can you?” you glared, putting all your strength in containing the blush that fought to take home at your cheeks.

“not without me” yechan answered, a smirk on his lips as he winked at you. you groaned and pushed his head underwater before swimming away, biting back a giddy smile and missing the way his eyes followed you when he emerged back out.

living next to lee yechan was a blessing in disguise… or at least that's what your dad had said after he brought you home that one night.

being 17 is hard. being 17 and in love with one of your brother’s friends who you're supposed to hate is even harder. 

you sat on a booth at a dinner you hated, listening to a guy you didn’t like continue to talk about things you didn’t care about after forty minutes of having given up on even attempting to show interest. you had only said yes to him because your friends told you he was nice enough and not bad looking at all, but as he mansplained crypto currency to you for the fourth time like you were stupid, you had enough.

even then, you didn’t have it in you to make up any type of excuse to leave, not being one to be impolite. your mind had wandered off completely when the bell rang, announcing a new client and pulling your attention back to the door. your heart skipped a bit at the sight of yechan, eyebrows furrowed. he hated that dinner too.

he scanned the room quickly, his frown softening when his eyes found yours. you couldn’t help the light smile that formed on your lips at the recognition in his obsidian orbs, your heart beginning to race as he walked towards you.

“ynnie, hi, sorry to interrupt but your brother told me to find you. he has been trying to reach you for a while, but i guess you were too entertained” he spoke, finally getting your date to shut up. you knew damn well you didn’t have a single message from sumin. you looked at yechan cryptically for a couple seconds until his eyes widened slightly, urging you to play along.

“oh shit, give me a second” you answered, opening your phone to find only a ‘you're welcome ;)’ in yujun’s chat. “i'm so sorry, i have to go, family thing” you excused yourself as you put your phone back in your purse. your date understood completely, making you feel just slightly bad as you said bye to him and left with yechan trailing right behind you.

“what was that about?” you asked with a small chuckle when you were outside the diner, yechan’s car parked just out front. “yujun told me you were having a bad date so i thought i’d come and save you” he shrugged, and yujun’s text finally made sense.

“were you around here?” you questioned as you both got into the car, buckling your seatbelt.

“not really, i was at home” yechan answered nonchalantly, but the way his ears were slightly pink didn’t go unseen by you.

“why did you come all this way?” you asked, feeling your heartbeat on your throat at how fast it pumped. was it possible that he cared for you like you did for him?

“you were having a bad time, i wasn’t just gonna let you sit through it” he spoke as he began to drive, making your stomach fill with butterflies at how attractive he looked.

“i'm glad it was you that came” the words escaped your lips without a second thought. your eyes widened slightly as you heard yourself, your ears beginning to match his. you had never allowed yourself to talk to the boy like that, always opting for sassy comments.

“yeah? i'm glad it was me too” yechan smiled, his eyes on the road as his free hand travelled towards the middle of the car where yours was placed. you followed his movements with your eyes, sucking in a small breath as you extended your pinky towards his, letting it out once he interlaced it with his own.

living next to lee yechan was a blessing in disguise… or at least that’s what you thought as you laid next to him.

your head rested on his chest, his attention solely focused on the show that played on the tv in front of you. his hand played with your hair mindlessly, making your eyes feel like they were going to close at any minute while you reminisced about all those previous years you spent at his side. the annoyance he made you feel that turned into playful adoration over time, the confessions of a life long crush and the comfort of his arms. even if sometimes it was a little too disguised — enough to make you forget why you would ever think it could be a blessing —, living next to lee yechan was a blessing in disguise.
