Why are there people who donāt like vaccines for their pets? What do they think is going to happen? Is their pomsky going to get dog autism?
Iām in a facebook dog group that is anti vax and advocates exposing puppies toĀ āparks where raccoons roamā so they canĀ ābuilt an immunityā. They also give a certain brand of Irish beer to them because it is believed to apparently have heartworm killing hops in it lmao.Ā
I just stay for the pro raw feeding but I disagree with their vivid anti vax stance.Ā
I never understand friends who feel proud for not vaccinating their dogs for rabies.
I type the following three lines every time I mention rabies:
Please donāt get caught up in the crazy and fail to vaccinate your pet for rabies. Rabies is a zoonotic disease. According to the CDC: āThe most important global source of rabies in humans is from uncontrolled rabies in dogsā.
How about the case in Maryland where the person contracted rabies from an organ transplant (racoon rabies variant). Doesnāt this sound like an X-files episode?
Sadly no, the only thing that Maryland case shows is that there was a big problem in identifying a potential case of human rabies (rabies shares a lot of sympthoms with other encefalitis), correctly selecting an organ donor and performing the tests correctly to identify potential diseases that could be transmited through organ donation. In short, it shows a big fail in the health care system, specially when there are already been reports of people getting rabies even from corneal transplant.
As for vaccinating pets, Iām all for it and luckily Iām from a country that actually obliges people to have their pets vaccinated because we did have a terrible rabies outbreak thanks to the poor choice of an asshole politician.
Nope. My point is that some folks think rabies isnāt a real concern - the only purpose for the legal requirement for the rabies vaccine is to help āvets get richā (insert comments about The Man here). I could change the Maryland example to the recent Ontario rabid raccoon case. *shrug*
Lol Rabies vaccines are only $5-$15, I donāt know where people think vets are getting rich off of them.Ā Tell me-if your UNVACCINATED dog gets into a fight with a wild animal and requires vet care, are you willing to fork over the costs to board them in a certified quarantine area for six months? Because the only other option is to euthanize.Ā ALSO, should your UNVACCINATED dog into into a fight with another dog OR bites a person, the person can legally demand your dog to be tested for rabies. And you legally have no choice but to comply. Which means that your dog is immediately euthanized and his head/brain tissue is removed and tested. Ā Now, flip side, your VACCINATED dog gets into a fight with a wild animal: He just gets a rabies booster (much like how youād get a tetanus booster after cutting yourself on a rusty piece of metal, even if youāve had the shot in the last ten years) and goes on his merry way. If you VACCINATED dog gets into a fight with another dog or bites a person- Instead of being removed and killed (and assuming itās his first offense), he is just quarantined for ten days (and this is often just a home quarantine if you donāt act like an asshole to the ACO). And it follows the normal dangerous dog bite protocol of your city/county.Ā And as far as the other vaccines go-Iād always at least get the puppies series done. Even following up every three years with the DAPP when you get your rabies shot. That way if your dog gets sick, the vet can immediately rule out distemper and parvo. Having seen MANY puppies and dogs come down with parvo, it just isnāt worth it to me to not vaccinate.Ā I promise, your dog is not going to get pawtism from the rabies vaccine. The only vaccine reaction from rabies Iāve ever seen was cyst/abscess formation in two related piebald cattle dogs (fun fact, immunity is linked to the same gene that controls white/piebald/merleing), and the vaccine company agreed to pay for their treatment.Ā
Iāve personally had dogs with lumps at injection site immediately after, or that feel extra lethargic that day, but itās not enough to make me uncomfortable with getting the rabies done. That 100% mortality rate is mighty scary, and Iāve had a rabies scare after being bitten by feral cats whole volunteering myself. Followers who have been my friends since late high school will remember that mess. Itās arguably the hardest routine vaccination on dogs, but itās worth it imo. I do personally wait until the dog is 6 months, however, before giving the initial shot.
I also do puppy series, but have still been deciding on doing the parvo etc shots afterward. I have been, along with bordetella, just because I work in a pet store and Creed accompanies me every day, so he is exposed to sick dogs and their feces every single day. If I worked in a hardware store or didnāt trial, Iād probably be more lax about those.
I only do a parvo shot when the dog is a puppy and rabies every 3 years. Nothing else for my dogs (although Spook and Kallie did get their full set of puppy ax, Niner is only getting Parvo and rabies)

Bad Dog Agility podcast - Episode 111: The Myth of the Ring-Wise Dog
Have you been told you have a ring-wise dog? In this podcast we discuss why we believe that most dogs labelled āring-wiseā actually arenāt, and why this is a very good things for agility competitors.
Awesome podcast about dogs who behave differently in the trial ring than in practice. One important tidbit to glean out of this is for people who sayĀ āmy dog is perfect at home but not in trialsā is to think about that statement. Is your dog really perfect in practice, they always nail their 2o2o or weave entries, never break their sit-stay? Or does your memory just gloss over those mistakes at home because theyāre not as important as mistakes at a trial?
And if youāre not competing yet, there are some good things to keep in mind for added proofing in your training.
me: brings my service dog to any given event
some random entitled asshole: well if I had known dogs were allowed I would've brought mine
What breed does your dog often get mistaken for?
Husky or husky mix, because blue eyes must mean husky !
Iāve also gotten border collie a few timesā¦.and wolf/wolfdog.
Every single other sighthound except borzoi or silken windhound. The top contenders for Bandit are: Afghan, Irish Wolfhound, Greyhound-mix, and Saluki. Obie gets a lot of Saluki, Whippet, and greyhound-mix too. Both get collie sometimes. Occasionally we get Irish setter and Airedale as well.
Lizy has been called a dachshund mix, a gsd mix, a Doberman mix. Watson has been called a sheltie/collie mix, or just a plain mutt before. Sigh.
I get asked quite a bit if Leia is a Chiweenie.
Kenobi⦠I could go all day. Letās just say they usually get the shepherd right at least.
Like nobody in this town has seen a bicolor GSD before, so everyone thinks heās a mix.Ā The best reaction I got so far was someone at the vet going, āWow, is he part Doberman?ā
aussie for almost all the borders. kindred got called a gsd once. vivec gets called a lab, a curly coat, etc. people will argue with me that valyria isnāt a border collie, because āthey donāt come in that colorā galli has been called a kelpie once.
The Labradors havenāt been misidentified yet but, most people know what a Labrador is.
Belgians are fairly common in Germany so most people are familiar with them, but when Daenerys was younger I got quite a few āis that a spitz??ā questions.
One person, I swear to god, asked me how I got a pet fox and isnāt it illegal. She was like 3 months old. I thought he was joking. He was dead serious. I still donāt think he really believed me when I told him that she is a dog.
And what happens most often is that someone says, āI know your dog must be a shepherd of some sort. But what kind?ā
People always think Kallie is a GSD mix, Spook is a border collie and Niner is a Catahoula
dog mom things
āwhat are you eating. whatās in your mouth??? whATāS IN YOUR MOUTHā

Actual Animal Behavior #003
Your dog wonāt stop barking?
Your dogās big passion is to be a great singer, and youāre being, like, really unsupportive.
I am crying at your tags. Yes. Agreed. Same.
if you see a dog in a public space, and itās not actively harassing anyone or destroying property, please leave it alone. itās very likely a working on-duty service dog, even if it doesnāt have a cape or vest or patches.
please donāt talk at the dog, make kissy noises, reach out & touch them, or even make eye contact with the dog. please donāt try to walk around the dogās human handler to get better access to the dog if the human is blocked them. please leave the dog alone if the dog is blocking you from their human handler. Ā its very likely a trained task to mitigate their disability/ies. please leave the human handler alone if you can help it. do not ask the handler if you may interact with the dog or ask questions about the dog unless the dog/handler team are wearing something (or say to you) explicitly that itās ok to ask the handler questions.
