I can wholeheartedly recommend GIMP, I started using it because I wanted an “ms paint with layers” but it is so much more! And transparent PNGs are totally possible.

I know I do mainly traditional artwork, but I also started out with GIMP when I was in high school. Honestly, anything that makes artmaking tools more accessible is great in my book. And GIMP is definitely good in that

Have to jump on this bandwagon to say, I recently was forced to buy a new computer, and my old version of photoshop wouldn’t work on my new laptop, so I switched FROM photoshop to GIMP and honestly? It’s just as good for pretty much all basic painting things. I definitely recommend it. I do all my color roughs and edits of my scans in it – and it’s free!

A free alternative to Photoshop and GIMP (I think it’s actually based on GIMP code) is Krita.

Krita is supposed to be more to be more of a painting tool than GIMP is. If you’re interested it’s available here: https://krita.org/en/
