food sovereignty >>>>> absolute veganism for everyone
im not kidding when i say it makes your life 1000x easier when it comes to this subject if you just abandon the vegan vs antivegan dichotomy entirely and invest in learning about food sovereignty
for those who have never heard about it: "Food sovereignty, a term coined by members of Via Campesina in 1996, asserts that the people who produce, distribute, and consume food should control the mechanisms and policies of food production and distribution, rather than the corporations and market institutions that have come to dominate the global food system. It also encompasses the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems. The phrase "culturally appropriate" signifies that the food that is available and accessible for the population should fit with the cultural background of the people consuming it."
food sovereignty is inclusive of both vegan diets and those who cannot go vegan whether it's because of chronic illness, sustenance needs or anything else
it also addresses the economic root cause of animal and land exploitation, ie who controls the means of production and whether their goals are to feed the people or expand profit margins
food sovereignty is an indigenous and peasent led movement that seeks to end the abuse of land and animals by empowering the workers who grow and harvest our food instead of greedy corporations
i highly suggest checking out via campesina's website to start learning about food sovereignty and i encourage everyone to stop investing so much time in endless arguments about veganism when we could all be doing much more useful things to organize against the big agribusiness that is harming all of us– humans, animals and the land
"The phrase "culturally appropriate" signifies that the food that is available and accessible for the population should fit with the cultural background of the people consuming it."
This seems... Very close to the "white people do what white people do, black people do what plack people do" mindset that many racial supremacists have, can you please elaborate some?
Because in my mind this is saying "food that is available for the population HAS to fit with the cultural background" aka foreign food isn't allowed.
Am I misinterpreting? Are you actually saying that "the population should have access to all of the food that fits their cultural background?"
I can draw a diagram if it would help, I'm just a very confused and sleepy person right now.
my understanding of it is the second thing you said that “the population should have access to all of the food that fits their cultural background”
i think via campesina tried to make their statements as broad and inclusive as possible but imo for their political stance to make sense it has to be grounded in decolonization and it has to center indigenous and colonized people’s struggles against institutions that have tried to destroy their cultures, taken their land, and forced them to adopt the food and agricultural systems of the dominant culture that colonized them. think the buffalo of the plains being systematically slaughtered by settlers to starve native americans or first nations people being denied fishing rights despite those rights being guaranteed by treaties. the idea of the right to eat culturally appropriate food is a direct response to the ongoing violence indigenous people face.
via campesina’s mission statement and goals have also changed over the years. a lot of the parts about culture and access to culturally appropriate food were added after receiving input from indigenous peoples who felt like the organization wasn’t doing enough to address how colonization disrupted or destroyed their traditional agricultural practices and forced them to adopt the agricultural style and food of their oppressors.
i think one of the things i like most about this organization is that they can be flexible and they are willing to grow. they have shown that they really do listen and respond to people’s concerns so if they day comes were they find that theres better language to communicate with they will evolve. as it stands now tho i think they have done a pretty good job of trying to distill all the various different needs of people all over the world into a simple statement with a direct goal, it just needs some context.
