trigger warnings: unplanned pregnancy, alcoholism
Travis Marshall, once the star athlete of Briar Ridge High School's football team, was a natural born talent—fast, powerful, and built with dreams of playing college ball, perhaps even making it to the pros.
Granted that all changed once he entered his senior year of high school and a vicious ACL tear during their State Championship, crushed his hopes and dreams, ending his promising career before it ever, even truly began.
Instead of leaving Briar Ridge like all his other friends did after graduation, Travis stuck around, nursing his injury and slowly realizing that his once-promising future had slipped through his fingers.
He dabbled in various jobs— ranging from maintenance at the local high school to some odd construction work, to even a short stint as a bartender. But nothing ever panned out or stuck. His potential, long ago overshadowed by his injury, seemed to have withered, and his days soon blurred together in a haze of missed opportunities and self-doubt.
To make matters worse, life took a messy turn when Travis got involved with his now partner, a woman from Briar Ridge (potentially? wc alert) who’d had her own share of problems. The relationship, fueled by a mix of unresolved tension, unspoken promises, and long nights of drinking, was toxic from the start.
They have a child together, a daughter named Sadie, but the bond between them feels more like a string that's been pulled too tight—tearing at the edges but never fully snapping. They fight often, yet neither one seems ready to let go, caught in a cycle of resentment and longing.
Trav’s appearance, while once godlike and revered, has started to show the wear and tear of years of bad habits. His home, a fixer upper Beach Front property, which once held memories of his teenage glory, now sits in slight disrepair, as though his failures have taken root in the very walls and not just in his life or in his failed accomplishments.
His friends from high school have mostly moved on, leaving him to stew in the stagnation of his choices. And often times, desire what they have.
Though he loves his daughter deeply, Travis has a hard time balancing the responsibilities of fatherhood with the pull of his own self-destructive tendencies. He knows he’s messed up, but there's a part of him that still clings to the belief that he could get it together, that he could somehow turn it around. But with each passing year, the chances seem slimmer and slimmer.
Trav started drinking as a way to escape the crushing weight of his unfulfilled potential. The nights after the injury were the hardest—long stretches of darkness where he couldn't even bring himself to watch football games anymore. In the quiet moments when his mind wandered to his past glory, the alcohol was the only thing that numbed the pain. It was easier to numb the memories of the football field, the cheering crowds, and the scholarship offers than to face the reality of his current life.
There are days when Trav tells himself that he’s going to quit drinking, that he’s going to be a better father to Sadie, a better person all around. But those promises are often made during the few sober moments he has, and as soon as the pressure builds, as soon as he’s back in the familiar grip of his own self-doubt, it all falls apart again. Every time he tries to pull himself out of the hole, he falls back in with a bottle in his hand, convincing himself that it’s the only way to cope with the sense of failure that’s followed him for years.
After bouncing from one job to the next, Trav eventually found himself working as a ranch hand on his childhood best friend’s family ranch. His friend, Shane, who had stayed in Briar Ridge, always had a way of pulling Travis back into the fold when things went wrong. The ranch has been a place of solace for Trav, where he can work with his hands and forget about his failures for a while.
One of the few things that brings Trav any real peace right now, is working with the horses on the ranch. There’s something calming about the way they respond to him—silent but steady, mirroring the quiet strength he wishes he still had within himself.
He’s not a natural with them like some of the other ranch hands, but he finds comfort in the rhythm of brushing down the horses, cleaning the stables, and watching them gallop across the open fields.
In a way, it reminds him of his old football days—the feeling of freedom, the adrenaline, and the connection to something larger than himself. The horses become a symbol of the life he once had, and maybe still could have if he can find the right path.

Father: Charles “Charlie” Marshall (63) Charlie is a hardworking, blue-collar man who never quite understood his son’s dreams of sports glory. A mechanic by trade, he always expected Trav to follow in his footsteps—something Trav resisted, believing there was more to life than working in the garage. Their relationship is strained, built on a lack of communication and differing worldviews. Charlie’s never really been the type to offer emotional support, and their conversations often revolve around practicalities—fixing things, making ends meet. Charlie views Trav’s injury and subsequent lack of ambition as a failure to live up to expectations, which makes their relationship tense and distant. Charlie still works hard but is starting to think about retirement, a concept Trav doesn’t know how to navigate.
Mother: Evelyn “Evie” Marshall (61) Evelyn is the more nurturing figure in Trav’s life. She’s always been there for him, even when things weren’t going well. Though she’s supportive, she tends to indulge Trav, always brushing aside his mistakes with a gentle “you’ll figure it out” attitude. She’s been a homemaker for most of her life, her world revolving around the family, but her patience is starting to wear thin. Evelyn often feels torn between wanting to be the supportive mother Trav needs and recognizing that her son is stuck in a rut, unable to move forward. She’s deeply involved with her granddaughter, Sadie, and is often the one to step in when things get chaotic at Trav’s place.
Younger Brother: Josh Marshall (35) Josh is everything Travis isn’t: organized, successful, and driven. After graduating college, Josh moved to Charleston, where he found a job in real estate and quickly made a name for himself. He’s married, with two young children, and lives a life Trav can’t seem to relate to anymore. Josh, while not unkind, has grown increasingly frustrated with his brother’s lack of ambition and failure to get his life together. Their relationship is distant, with Josh trying to be supportive but often coming off as condescending, believing Trav’s choices are more about laziness than circumstance. Trav feels resentment towards Josh’s success, as it reminds him of the promise he once had that’s now just out of reach.
