She was born in Charleston where her father worked and the family relocated to Briar Ridge when Addie was around three years old for a quiet life. Addie's grandparents on her mother's side, were born and raised in Briar Ridge, so she spent a lot of time with them.
Her family relocated to Savannah when she was 12, but Addie stayed with her grandparents so not to disrupt her school.
Her father’s family started the Liang Hotels chain in the 1920s after leaving China before the communist revolution. They had been a rich family in China and so were able to buy a hotel quickly before upscaling when they could. Addie’s father took over as a third generation family CEO when she was 13, after her grandparents stepped down. They lived in New York and now live in Martha’s Vinyard.
Addie didn’t see much of her father growing up as he often travelled for work. She was raised predominantly by her mum and her mums parents.
She met Shane when she was a child as their grandparents were friends. Addie was often at the ranch and the two never really got on. Things changed when they were teenagers and after Shane taught her to ride a horse, they fell for each other and began a relationship. They were adorable high school sweethearts and planned a future together. This ended when Shane broke up with her at their graduation party.
After Shane broke up with her, Addie moved back in with her parents to get some distance from the town. She agreed to go to a college of their choosing and they agreed to let her study what she wanted, if she agreed to work at Liang Hotels on graduation.
She went to Yale and studied history. During this time, she became very close with her father’s parents as they lived close enough that they could see each other regularly. Through this, she became much more in touch with her Chinese culture.
After graduation, she began working in the Savannah office of Liang Hotels. She worked in different teams throughout her time but never fit in anywhere, simply going through the motions as it was expected of her. Eventually, she told her parents how unhappy she was and told them she needed a leave of absence.
She took her savings and travelled the world. She went all through Europe, south east Asia, China, Japan, Thailand, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, the Philippines.
In Turkey, she met Cem Cerkez when she was volunteering at the hospital he was recovering at.
She worked odd jobs throughout her whole travelling experience, bartending, washing hair at salons, teaching piano as she had played since a child.
Eventually she went home and after finding herself and her confidence, she told her parents she wanted to be a teacher. At first they refused to accept it and her grandparents helped with her tuition. She got her teaching certificates and eventually her parents conceded that having her in their lives and happy was better than not at all or having her miserable.
A couple of months ago, she moved back to Briar Ridge to work at her former high school teaching history.
Headcanons:
