A person who is truly authentic can be prone to manipulation and naivety. That’s because, by human nature, we often assume others are like us. If you’re authentic, you tend to believe others are naturally authentic too.

But be cautious, naivety makes you an easy target for those who don’t carry that same energy.

Authentic people, by nature, tend to assume others are as genuine as they are. This projection—rooted in the truth bias (Levine et al., 1999) and false consensus effect (Ross et al., 1977)—can leave them vulnerable to manipulation. Research also shows that individuals high in empathy and trust are more likely to be exploited by those with manipulative traits (Barlow et al., 2012). In a world where not everyone reciprocates sincerity, authenticity without caution can make one an easy target.

If you are feeling good about yourself or situation and then your mood suddenly shifts leaving you feeling insecure, unsure, etc. try to remind yourself that nothing has truly changed but your perception. Your cute outfit did not suddenly become horrid. Your delicious meal did not tranform into a terrible one. Your peers perception of you has not radically transformed over a social misstep. Everything we experience is put through it through our mental filter, and that can convince us that everyone else sees us with the judgement we have for ourselves. Be kind to yourself.
