“What’s this about?” Xiaolang asks as the three of you each take a look at the poster Yukito was holding.
It’s been nearly a week since you last saw him. Both he and Toya had been avoiding your group, but now you know the reason why.
Yukito smiles, snacking on his nth snack that day. “It's a play. The school festival usually has a big main event in the grand hall, and it was our grade’s turn. I’m playing a can of mackerel!”
Your gaze drifts back to the poster
‘Junior Play’
‘Cinderella’
The poster was well designed; it seems like everyone put a lot of effort into it.
You and Xiaolang look at each other, a slight feeling of embarrassment taking hold of you.
The two of you had gotten suspicious of what they were up to. It started back when you were still trying to capture ‘time.’
The two of you had gotten desperate to find out what they were up to since you were bored out of your mind.
You did find out, but also got caught. And since it was against the rules for primary students to roam around the secondary building during class time, you were both given a 2-week detention. But luckily, the day was reset, and it was like nothing happened at all!
So it’s safe to say you two already knew that this was coming. Well, the least you can do is act surprised.
“That’s so cool, Yukito… Who’s in the cast?” You ask while the brunette beside you looks off into the distance.
Tomoyo perks up beside you. “Is N/n’s brother also a part of the play?” she asks.
Yukito’s demeanor changes at that. A mischievous glint in his eyes.
“Oh, of course~” A sinister smile takes over his face. “Believe it or not, he's one of the leads.”
Really???
Your brother???
A lead? That's… surprising?
In your mind, it’s not impossible, but knowing your brother, it’s hard to imagine him pretending to be a character.
“A lead? Interesting.” Xiaolang mutters, to which you absentmindedly nod, “I thought being talentless was genetic.” That made you freeze mid-nod.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” You ask him, your expression blank.
Xiaolang gives you a small glance before looking away.
“I think you know.” His eyes narrow. You grind your teeth, grab his collar, and start shaking him.
“THE RECORDER INCIDENT WAS ONE TIME! I GOT BETTER AT IT EVENTUALLY!”
“Unhand me, you brat—”
The two of you start bickering again while the other two watch from a distance.
“When you said he was a lead, you didn’t mean Prince Charming, did you?”
“Nope.” Yukito chuckles, “Tomoyo, when you do come to watch the play, make sure to record it for N/n; I have a feeling she’s going to enjoy it very much.”
“You didn't even need to ask,” Tomoyo replies, watching you two start to brawl.
And that brings you to today…
You pat down your dress, looking at yourself in the mirror.
Today was Gotham High’s annual creative festival, the one event the high school students look forward to.
You had made plans with Tomoyo earlier; you were going to enjoy today as much as you could.
Xiaolang said he’d join you eventually; when that ‘eventually’ will be is still a mystery.
“Then I’m Going Kero.” You wave to him. He gives you a wave back before going back to his game.
You make your way down to the kitchen, where Alfred is. Skipping with a big smile on your face.
Alfred notices your good mood and smiles softly. “Already ready for your day out, young miss {Name}? ”
You nod, sitting down near the counter as he places your breakfast in front of you.
Unbeknownst to you, there was a tiny demon hiding near the doorway. His little green eyes squint as he listens to your conversation.
“Do you perhaps need me to drive you there? It isn't safe to walk there alone, especially with how crowded it will be at Gotham High.”
“It’s fine; Tomoyo’s going to pick me up today. You don't have to worry.” You say, taking another bite.
“Very well.”
He backs away from the kitchen entrance, as he already has all the information he needs.
He quickly scurries away to his hellhole room.
He put on the most suitable outfit he could find. Grabbing a bag and stuffing it with all the essentials: a snack, water, money, and weapons.
He grabs his phone, opening the chat he shares with his accomplice.
As much as he’d hate to admit it. He’s going to need help for this.
He sends a simple message
—‘I’m sending you the coordinates, let's meet in 15 minutes
— ???
— dami y?
— idk how to read coords
— jus tel me where it is
— wait, I need to ask my mom
—…
— my mom's askin y
— dami y
—Just get here.
He shuts off his phone; hopefully, his accomplice can reach their shared destination on time.
He runs back into the kitchen, startling both you and Alfred.
“I would like to join you, sister.” He straightens his back. Holding both straps of his backpack.
You sit there confused for a moment before choking out some words, “Join me for what?”
“For the outing.”
Alfred lets out a sigh. While he is happy to see at least someone try to get close to you, he isn't thrilled it’s Damian. After all, given the small history the two children shared…
He didn't want you to get hurt again.
“Young master Damian, you must understand you cannot just barge into the young miss’s plans as you pleas-”
“I don't mind.” You say, to which the two look at you. “I mean, it’s an open event anyone can go to.”
You take another bite.
“But are you sure you won't be bored there? Unless you want to invite a friend?”
“I’ve already taken care of that.”
“Already? Okay.” You down a glass of water.
“Let's go then!” You jump out of your chair and prance towards the door, little demon child, I mean, Damian following you closely behind.
“Have a safe trip, both of you.”
“We will!” You wave goodbye to Alfred and then shut the door.
.
..
…
The two of you stand in silence as you wait for the car to arrive.
Well, it’s silence for you, Damian's running simulations in his head of how the day's going to go.
Let's start with what he knows. Your destination is Gotham High. Today specifically is the annual school festival.
Based on the previous year's festival. It’s one main event paired with smaller events orchestrated by each class.
So he can expect one of the places you go is your… ‘half brother’s’ class event.
And obviously you’ll attend the main event, there's no point in going otherwise.
So aside from your *half-*brother, there isn't anyone to get in the way of your outing today.
In the meantime, he should make small talk.
“Are we waiting for the car?”
“Yeah, Tomoyo’s gonna pick us up.”
Ah. Of course, this day wouldn't go that smoothly.
Tomoyo Daidoji. The biggest hurdle that could ever inconvenience him.
“Ah- They’re here.” You say, rushing down the steps to get to the long black limousine that just rolled up in front of you.
Damian follows, albeit a little less enthusiastically than before.
The two of you get in the car, and Tomoyo scoots away to make space for you.
“Tomoyo!” You give her a big hug.
“It’s good to see you too n/n” she smiles as she lets go of you, turning to figure that is currently watching the introduction with an unpleased look.
“Damian.” She says with a smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes
“Daidoji,” he responds, seemingly not wanting to converse with her further
“I didn't know you would be joining us today.”
“It was a last-minute decision; hopefully, it’s not too inconvenient for you.” There’s not a hint of concern in his voice.
Tomoyo grips the seat. Annoying little shit.
She’s glad he isn't her little brother. She gives you a solemn look, ‘poor n/n you must have to deal with all that at home…’
“N/n did Li say he was joining us?” She asks, trying to distract herself before she does something most unladylike.
Damian scowls. Is there another fool he has to deal with today? Great.
“He said he’ll be there and that if we meet, we meet. And if we don't, we don't.”
“Well, we’ll see him there then.”
“Second floor, fourth door. Second floor, fourth door… ” You repeat under your breath as you look for your brother's class.
The influx of people crowding the halls didn't make the job easier.
“Class 2-D! Found it.”
You march into the classroom while Tomoyo and Damian follow you. The former holding your hand for dear life in order not to get devoured by the flood of people.
“Ah- Welcome!” A familiar voice reaches your ears
“Yukito!” You shout, your voice barely louder than the crowd surrounding you. “N/n!” He says, sharing your enthusiasm, his gaze shifts to the younger boy clinging closely behind you.
“Oh, a new face. Hello.” Yukito waves, to which Damian just nods.
“Can I get you three anything?” He asks
“What exactly is your class doing?” You ask, but that familiar feeling in your fingertips makes the end of your sentence come out hesitant.
“Oh, we’re a candy shop, sweet, sour, and soda. You name it, we’ll probably have it.” Yukito says, but you can't focus on that right now. You look around the room, trying to figure out where exactly that presence is from.
Before long, your gaze wanders to your right. And turning your gaze downward, you see it.
Xiaolang glaring at you.
You jump back in dramatically, clinging to Tomoyo’s sleeve for comfort
“DUDE! That is so uncool!” Your voice cracks as you yell out to your unamused ‘rival’.
Yukito stares between the two of you before handing Xiaolang the soda he was holding.
“Here’s your 3rd soda, good sir.”
Xiaolang gives a shy nod before looking at you again.
“I barely said anything, and yet you're already shaking in your boots.”
“Oh, please, you know exactly what you did!”
Yukito smiles and walks away while Tomoyo lets out a small smile as the two of you bicker again. “Li, do you want to join our group?”
Xiaolang takes a moment to think before replying, "I suppose I will.”
“Gee, if you don't want to join us that bad, you could just-”
“I said I’ll join.”
Yukito walks back up to your group, already changed into his school uniform.
“Well, that’s the end of my shift. Would you four like a tour?” He asks, to which the two of you reply without a moment's hesitation.
“Yes!” “Absolutely!”
The two of you share yet another glare.
“Alright then, we’ll walk to the main hall and check out all the stuff on the way.”
Your group follows Yukito, and you make your way downstairs. You are walking in front, just a step behind Yukito.
Xiaolang walks past the crowd to be next to you, but not before giving an unreadable glance in Damian's direction.
“How come you got startled by just me staring at you?” He asks. “That was anything but a normal stare. I nearly mistook you for a… you know…”
“A clow card. your serious?” his voice laced with mockery, “And here I thought you were getting better, my mistake.”
“I am getting better. You just… confuse me sometimes.”
“Well, if it’ll make you catch them any slower.”
You ignore the jab and continue walking, letting the two behind you witness your interaction.
Damian glares at the brunette next to you. He prided himself on knowing everyone you're close with; he would need to if he wanted to be better than all of them and become number one on the list.
But now he stands behind you, watching this random stranger push him down another level on that list.
When did you even make such a friend? He just thought he was a classmate you had the misfortune of being paired with at the sports day, but to think you're actually friends…
“They’re really cute, aren't they?” Tomoyo’s comment reaches his ears. He shoots a glare towards the girl, who returns it with a wry smile.
“Don't be ridiculous, sister would never start or get into meaningless relationships at such a young age.” He says, angered at what she’s insinuating.
“Right.. because you would know that,” she looks away, but that comment dug into Damian's head.
In her head, she knows he’s right. N/n’s too naive to ever think of a person that way. But this is her revenge for however many times this little demon made you cry.
Besides, it’s funny to see him panic at having another rival to beat.
“Bunny Plush!” You say as you run up to the mountain of overproduced, poor-quality bunny dolls near the basketball court.
“Can I have one?” You ask the volunteer girl standing next to it, already pulling out your wallet
Xiaolang walks up to you. looking up at the monstrous pile, “Aren’t you a little too old for that?”
“You're never too old for plushies,” You say half-heartedly.
You hold out a 20 bill, a portion of your life savings, and hold it out in front of the older girl, who only looks at you with an apologetic smile.
“Ah! Sorry, little one its actually a prize toy you can't buy it.”
You pull back your hand. “Oh… what’s the prize for?”
She perks up as she begins explaining, “It’s a basketball challenge. If you can dribble past 5 of our players and land the ball in the hoop, you win!”
You look towards the field to see a team of high schoolers who are most definitely a 1000 times taller than you. You curse internally. In times like this, you really wish you could just use the cards freely.
Xiaolang smirks, “Are you still gonna try for it?” He asks with his usual snarky tone.
“What? Are you saying I can't do it???” You bite back immediately.
“I can do it-” Damian tries to interject.
“Why don't I do it?” Yukito steps forward. The person goes silent at the unexpected display.
The volunteer stares at him, eyes wide, before letting out a small laugh. “Oh come on, Yukito your built like a stick, are you sure?”
“I mean, I’ve never played properly before, might as well?”
“Alright then, do your best,” She says as she passes a ball to him.
And the next moment, he was on the field. To be fair, you had no hope for him. The only sport you know he’s ever done is archery, but basketball is a completely different story.
So your group just stands there in awe, and this 17-year-old outruns all five players and scores another basket for the 5th time in a row.
The volunteer girl runs up to him, “Ok, Yukito, you gotta stop, you're gonna make me go broke for dolls.”
The boy smiles, “Don't worry, I think I’ve gotten enough for everyone.” He says, looking past her to see the children stunned as they watch the players collapse in pain.
One of the players walks up to him. Slinging his arms over Yukito's shoulders. “Say, Yukito, why don't you join the team? You are clearly better than all of us combined.”
He takes a moment to think, “No. I think I’ll pass. If I have to do the same club activity every day, then I think I’ll die from boredom.”
“Well, I tried.” The player says, removing his hand.
Yukito walks over to your group. “That was amazing, Yukito,” Both you and Xiaolang say in unison as you crowd around Yukito.
“Oh, you two flatter me too much… It was nothing really,” He says sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck. “I think it’s about time we head to the auditorium, the play will probably start soon.”
“Right. But Damian, what about your friend?” You look back at your brother, who is holding two dolls in both arms, all the while a massive backpack hangs from his shoulders
“He will be a little late.” The boy looks down at the two bunny plushies. One for him and the other for his partner in crime is ridiculously late.
“Okay then, let's go.”
The auditorium has been the center of several complaints from many teachers.
Several students have been walking in and out of the building constantly for the past few weeks. The amount of noise from the building itself should be enough to make a dog go deaf.
What do they expect? They’ve given a class of juniors all the freedom they want to make a play. Of course, they’re going to be loud.
Students crowd all over the building, some arranging the seating’s people will sitting on, others fixing up the stage's decor.
Backstage, the cast is putting on their makeup while others are having their costumes fixed at the last minute.
“Oh! Nice work, Toya!” A classmate says as your brother hands over whatever garment he was holding.
Toya sighs, getting up from his seat. “No problem. Just don't rip it again, okay?”
He turns off the sewing machine and covers it. “I feel like Cinderella, helping you people fix your costumes.”
“Isn't that convenient?” One of his classmates snickers. "Say, you taught yourself how to sew like this anyway?”
“My mom did.”
“Figures, wasn’t she a model or something?”
“Something like that”
“Look at him go.” A girl mumbles, she and her friend at the stairwell. Observing your brother like he’s some exhibit.
She sighs, “So he cooks, he cleans, and he knows how to sew.” Her friend smirks, elbowing her .“Perfect husband material.”
The two of them snicker at the comment before looking up at their third friend sitting further up on the stairwell.
“Ain’t that right, Yoko?”
That catches the third girl off guard, “Huh? I-i guess..”
“Aww, look at her, already daydreaming about him.” Her friend teases. “Just tell him how you feel. It’s not like he’s dating or anything.”
Yoko gives an awkward smile. "I guess… I just noticed something about him.”
“Hm? Like what?” Her friend asks
“Nothing.” Best not to mention it…
Her eyes go back to Toya, but a part of her does wonder…
Truthfully, she’s been meaning to tell him how she feels. Even if he doesn't reciprocate, she needs it off her chest.
This is unbelievable. As the piano performance continues, Damian’s entire mind is filled with disgust. Not at the performers, they’re great. But the number of parents in the audience who clearly want to be anywhere else.
He can hear yawns from every direction, and even snores! Do these people not care for their children enough to even look a little entertained???
And no, he’s not being nitpicky about the experience because Daidoji INSISTED on sitting beside you, leaving him to sit next to your other friend.
At least you look like you're enjoying it. Eyes sparkling as you watch the pianist press the final key, ending their performance.
As the performers leave the stage, the curtains close and the lights dim, which wakes everyone up.
“And now 2-D presents ‘their Cinderella story,’” the announcer says as the curtains open up again.
“That’s the play, isn't it?” Tomoyo says, pulling out her camera, beginning to record the stage.
Xiaolang shifts in his seat. “What’s a can of mackerel got to do with Cinderella anyway?” You shrug at his question, turning your eyes to the stage. The stage lights shine on the actor on the stage as the narrator makes her opening line.
Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a young, beautiful, and honest girl. Her name was Cinderella.
The actor is crouched on the floor, repeating the same line. “Sob. Sob. Sob.” A bucket beside them and a cloth in their hands.
Your brain stops for a moment. Wait a second- that voice… isn't that-
Every day, Cinderella was pushed around by her evil stepmother and her equally evil stepsisters, but she always remained a sweet, hardworking girl.
The actor stands up, turning towards the audience. Their dresses twirl with their movements.
Your eyes look at their face. There’s no doubt it… Its..
“Toya???” You nearly fall out of your seat. Toya Cinderella looks towards the crowd, and just for a few seconds, your eyes meet. before he looks away with barely hidden shame.
The crowd erupts in cheers, “Toya!!! YOU GO TOYA!!!” You can only surmise that to be his classmates.
“Sounds like your brother's pretty popular,” Tomoyo says. But you barely hear her, how the hell are you meant to pay attention when the greatest thing in your life is happening right in front of your eyes?
Three other actors walk on stage. The stepmother and the stepsisters. All were wearing elaborate dresses.
“Cinderella~!” One of the stepsisters says, his voice full of arrogance. “Are you even doing the cleaning properly!? I can still clearly see dirt!”
“Yeah! I see dirt here, too,” The other stepsister says.
The two boys’ sisters start pushing Toya Cinderella around, hurling insults at his face.
“God, you really are worthless!” One of the sisters says, pushing him towards the other sister.
Toya let out a quiet “watch it-” before being pushed to face the stepmother.
“The food today was unreasonably salty, too.” The stepmother pushes him.
“What the hell- Are you trying to kill us!?” One of the sisters says before kicking Cinderella on the floor, “Kya.” Cinderella says in the most monotone voice.
The three walk to the other side of the stage as the stage light follows them.
The stepmother pulls out three tickets out of nowhere, beginning to dramatically deliver his line. “They're holding a grand ball at the castle tonight.”
“Ah~ That's right, mother!”
“The ball is tonight!” The stepsister says as they hold hands
“And the prince will choose his future bride!” Stepmother adds.
The three start giggling together.
“he’s going to choose from all the maidens that will attend tonight's ball.” One of the stepsisters says
“And I’ll end up marrying the prince!” The other says much to the bewilderment of the other.
*Gasp, “*No! I will!”
“Nuh-uh, I will.”
“NO IT’LL BE MEEEEEEEEEE!!!” The two say in unison.
All animosity is lost when the sisters smile, hold hands, and start dancing together. The two start to sing.
“Tat Tara Tat Tat Ta~” The two sing as they dance together.
“They’re really enjoying themselves…” Tomoyo says, getting a small amount of second-hand embarrassment.
The stepmother turns to Cinderella, “Oi, hurry up and get jealous,” He says with feigned anger in his voice.
“Wow, I sure wish I could go too,” Cinderella says with no emotion.
“Well, the three of us are going! Cinderella, you will just have to stay and take care of the house,” the stepmother says. “Let's go, girls.”
The three actors walk off, leaving Cinderella. He stands up and faces the audience. Then, with all the seriousness in the world, he says, “Oh Boy, I really wish I could go to that fancy ball…”
“I don't think he wants to go at all…” Xiaolang mutters
“It sounds like he’d be anywhere else.” You add.
“Hello There!” A figure with a cheery voice comes out of the curtain. Both you and Xiaolang sit straight in unison, w*hich catches Damian off guard* as you both focus on the stage.
The crowd Cheers yet again as Yukito walks towards Cinderella.
“Seems like he’s pretty popular too,” Damian comments, which activates something in both you and Xiaolang like two of your were sleeper agents.
“Of course, Yukito’s wonderful!” You say with excitement while Xiaolang nods in agreement.
“Something seems to be troubling you, Cinderella,” Yukito says, and he pulls something out of his pocket. “Here.”
He hands Cinderella a piece of paper, much to Cinderella's… shock? “This is an invitation to the ball. But how did you?”
“Ah-Ha! It’s because I'm a wizard!” Yukito says, pointing to the can of mackerel poorly attached to his head.
“What is that?”
“I’m glad you asked! It's a can of mackerel.”
As time had passed, this discarded can of mackerel gained sentience and magical powers!
Now, both you and Xiaolang nearly fell out of your seats. “But why that specifically..?” Xiaolang asks in confusion
“Maybe it's to promote taking care of the environment or something,” Tomoyo says.
You and Xiaolang look at each other as if that made sense.
As your group continued to watch the play, a small feeling grew around you. so inconspicuous that you didn't even notice it. green mist engulfed the school building as it entered through any gap it could find.
PLEASE WELCOME HER ROYAL HIGHNESS THE CROWN PRINCE!!!
A young girl enters the stage, the lights focusing on her as the crowd yet again cheers.
“As I'm sure you're all aware. Tonight's ball is where I plan to choose my bride to be! ” She places a hand on her chest as she delivers her line perfectly.
“I will choose my wife from among those gathered here tonight… Oh my!” She placed a hand on her mouth as the lights shifted towards the new character who walked on stage.
Cinderella in his big, beautiful, bodacious dress, and the crowds erupt in even louder cheers.
With every shade of pink on his gown, along with the most noticeable yellow bow ever seen in the kingdom's history, he makes his way towards the prince.
He grabs the prince by both her arms, which catches her off guard. They stare at each other as the prince remains flustered.
“Yoko… your line.” Toya whispers, which brings her back to reality.
“Ohh~! WHat A pURE and lovely maiden..!” She regains her composure. She grabs Cinderella's hands. “Then, shall we dance?”
The two start dancing in stiff motions. The four of you continue to watch the display.
“This play is weird.” You and Xiaolang mutter. You glare at him, and he does the same.
All that time catching cards together is really making you two sync up more than usual.
Just when you were about to look on stage, that familiar feeling comes to you again. The tips of your fingers begin to itch. Both you and Xiaolang look around with hidden panic.
Tomoyo and Damian notice the two of you as you shift around in your seats, trying to pinpoint where the signal was coming from.
“Is that…”You look towards Xiaolang.
He nods. “It definitely is.”
Suddenly, the entire auditorium is filled with green smoke. By this point, the two actors are up on a makeshift balcony as they deliver their lines.
“Please, beautiful maiden, why won't you give me your name?”
“I can't. I must return home. It's best you forget me, prince.”
The two of you watch in horror as the smoke engulfs the pillars holding up the balcony. The pillars disintegrate as the actors begin to fall. The crowd starts to panic. Toya grabs onto the balcony, his hand holding onto Yoko as she dangles in the air.
The curtain falls shut as the crowd's panic increases.
Your hands find your pocket, gripping the cards. Xiaolang gets up first, shooting you a look. You nod and begin to follow him.
Tomoyo and Damian watch as the two of you rush towards the stairwell leading to the audio room.
Xiaolang grabs the communication device out of your bag as you pull out your cards. “Silence,” and then the world goes black.
“No! Don't cry, Elizabeth. You're breaking my heart…” Kero mutters as he watches his 4th tragic romance today.
The sound of the communication device ringing fills the room as he wipes his eyes and picks it up.
“Hello..?”
“WHAT THE HELL TOOK YOU SO LONG! Xiaolang’s voice rings from the other side.
“Kero-! There, this card is breaking down anything it touches- What do we do?” Your voice comes out strained as Windy continues to use your mana to trap the mist.
“That’s the mist. N/n You need to trap it completely. If you're using windy its pointless, it will just engulf it too.” Right on queue, windy breaks returning as a cold card in front of you.
“Engulf…” You think for a moment before pulling out the rest of your cards, “Will shadow work?”
“Atta-girl! Use that!”
You pull out Shadow, and a magic circle forms underneath you. “Shadow, Ensnare the fog within yourself.” You hit the card with your sealing staff.
Ribbons of darkness fly out, covering the entire room. For a moment, you can't see, but then the shadow gets smaller.
"Reclaim the guise you were meant to inhabit! Clow card!" A faint glow comes from the inside of the shadow. The card escapes the darkness's grasp and floats towards you.
‘Mist’ has been caught.
You aren't even given a moment to rest before a blood-curdling scream reaches your ears.
The Pillars start to break even more as the two actors struggle not to fall. Your mana is nearly gone you doubt you can use sleep again.
Xiaolang takes out his charm, summoning his sword. “Stop and Reset.” He holds ‘time’ against his sword. The card glows. Everything freezes, and then the pillars and the curtain start to go back in place.
⏸
⏮
Xiaolang scowls at the card before turning to you, only to see you recording him with Tomoyo’s camera.
“You brought that thing with you?” He says, exasperated, to which you give him an awkward smile.
The boy looks down at his card. The figure in it glares at him. “Well… so much for time. I just caught it, and now I won't be able to use it for a while.”
“Huh? How come?” You tilt your head.
The communication device vibrates in Xiaolang's hand as Kero’s snicker comes through.
“Oho~ He doesn't like you, huh, brat?” Kero’s condescending voice rings through the room. “You pissed off your only card already—” Xiaolang hung up before Kero could get another word.
That yellow terp will get it one day.
…
You feel a small nudge on your ankle. Looking down to see the shadow, now reduced to its blob form.
It slumps against your form, tired.
“I feel like I’ve called on you too often recently. Good work.” You crouch down, giving it gentle pats. “I'm sorry… You can rest now.”
It nuzzles into your hand before returning to its card form. You place it in your pocket again.
Xiaolang walks past you, hands in his pockets. “Let's go. The sooner we can undo the cards’ effects, the better.” He says before descending the stairs with you trailing behind him.
▶
And that with that, both Cinderella and her prince lived happily ever after.
The crowd begins its applause. People are already filing out the door. The four of you make your way backstage to meet the delightful actors.
Toya tries to wriggle his way out of his costume, sweating like no man's sweat before.
“Toya,” Your chipper voice only makes him even more nervous as he turns to you with a new, unknown fear placed in his soul.
“Please, beautiful maiden, why won't you give me your name?” “I can't. I must return home; it's best you forget me, prince.”
Tomoyo’s camera plays the recording loud enough for the entire dressing room to hear.
“D-….Delete that.” Toya say’s shaking violently.
“Hm. Let's talk our terms later.” You smile. God… what did he ever do to deserve this..?
Before he could even breathe, a little bit of an angry child caught his attention.
And next to him- That brat kid that tried to steal from you. N/n why the hell are you still hanging out with him???
Damian glares at the older boy with disdain. His gaze then shifts towards the brunette next to him while Xiaolang does the same.
The three of them continue to glare at each other in a standoff.
You and Yukito stand beside Tomoyo as she records the scene… for memories.
“It's like that one Spider-Man meme…” You mutter.
.
..
…
The bonfire burns brightly as people dance around it. This was the evening show- well, more of a dance than a show.
You watched as people danced, content with how the day went.
“Yukito, where’s Toya?” You ask the older boy standing next to your seat.
“Hm? I don't know, he said he had something to take care of. I'm sure he’ll be back soon.”
.

Somewhere on the rooftop. Yoko and Toya stand in silence as the wind blows over them.
“What I’m trying to say is… I like you Toya.” Yoko’s confession hangs in the air.
Toya stays silent, thinking of a response. “I’m sorry. I can't reciprocate.”
Yoko doesn't seem too surprised. “It’s fine. You like someone else… don't you?” Toya gives a small nod.
“Is it Yukito?” His eyes widen. And for once, that stiff exterior of his crumbles.
“Was it… Obvious?”
“A little bit,” she laughs, watching him stumble over his thoughts
“Say, can I ask you a favor?” She asks.
She looks down at the people dancing below, smiling to herself. “Would you mind dancing with me at the bonfire?”
Damian sits beside you, while you people watch, Truthfully today has been filled with nothing but nonsense. He can't make sense of it.
The play’s disaster replays in his head. One moment, the set was collapsing, and you rushed to save your ‘brother’, the next, everything continued as if nothing of the sort had happened. Like it was all some sort of dream.
Furthermore, Operation: Friendship with N/n !!! has made minimal progress. How is it meant to get closer to you when there are so many obstacles in the way? He was so close to being your blood sibling… And his accomplice didn't even show up?
The sudden call of his name snaps him out of his thought, but it wasn't from you. He looks to the source of the noise and deadpans as an overly enthusiastic Jon runs towards him.
“Am I late?” The boy asks as Damian looks at him with disapproval written all over his face.
“I don't know why you phrased it as a question when it’s clearly a fact,” Damian responds.
Jon gives a nervous chuckle, scratching the back of his neck. “Sorry…”
Damian opens his backpack and grabs one the plushies from earlier, chucking it as his friend. “For you. Sister’s friend got it for everyone.”
Looking back, if Jon saw Yukito play, he wouldn't doubt the younger boy would be attached to Yukito like a leech right away.
He looks over to you and Tomoyo, who are huddled together, rewatching the footage of the capture play.
The rest of the day went by faster than expected.
By the time you were leaving, the sun was setting, and you were fast asleep on Tomoyo’s shoulder. With how much effort went into capturing mist, this was a well-deserved rest.
Damian, on the other hand, contemplated what had happened. Today was a good day, even with the obstacles in his way; he still got to spend time with you. And you didn't push him away, which means his spot in the hierarchy is bound to go up.
On a more serious note. What should he do with the information he was granted so graciously? He knows that the incident at the play wasn't just a hallucination. Before his senses failed him, He saw you pull out something glittery from your pocket.
He knows he didn't dream it up. He doesn't make mistakes like that.
Of course, I could have been his imagination. But the shift in reality that happened moments after? How did everything continue? Like, none of the panic happened? The confusion that everyone had, even the actors on stage…
And when he saw both you and that brunette look so sluggish throughout the last part of the play…
N/n, what have you gotten yourself into?
You're messing with a higher power that can't be comprehended…
What should he do?
Tell Bruce, of course.
…
actually… no.
This could be useful.
If he plays his cards right, he could use this to his advantage.
Father will find out in due time. For now, he’ll keep an eye on you.
But the moment something goes wrong, he won't sit back and watch.
He’ll ignore whatever happened today this once. Either way, keeping such a big secret should keep him in your top 5… surely…
