Chip Chase enters the Arkâs rec room, looking for someone. He can see Sideswipe and Bluestreak talking at one of the tables in the back, and Jazz looking over a datapad on a couch. After a moment he turns and pushes himself towards Jazz.Â
âHey, Jazz? I have a question,â Chip asks as he comes to a stop at the couch.Â
Jazz drops the datapad onto the couch and rests his chin against his hand instead, giving Chip his full attention, âAnd I should have an answer! Whatâs up?â He replies, smiling.
âIt may be a translation issue. Everyone here calls you the âHead of Special Operationsâ but I was looking through the chain of command thatâs listed on Teletran yesterday, and I noticed that thatâs not what your rank translated to there?â
Jazz chuckles at this, but glances away, âYeah, Teletran ainât exactly great at translating-â
âI translated it myself.â Chip interrupts.Â
âAh.â Jazz says, making a face, âwell, what did ya translate it to?âÂ
ââPolyhexian Allyship Directorâ. I know youâre from Polyhex, but I was wondering what the âAllyship Directorâ bit means?â Jazz hesitates for a long moment. He moves to pick up the datapad again. Chip glances at this, then starts again. âHow does it change to Head of Special Operations?â
Jazz hesitates for another moment. He takes a breath then explains, âIt doesnât, really. I guess⌠back in the early days of the war, Polyhex was real cut off from the other city-states. So when the Senate started overstepping, we didnât have the option of joining the âbots.â
âThough, the âbots were a part of the âcons at that point,â Jazz waves his hand dismissively, âEither way, when we decided to join the âbots later, we had to wade through a ton of legal stuff âcause we were technically our own faction.â
âOnce we were through all that we started doing work. We ended up handling most of the spec-ops stuff, so the nickname stuck,â Jazz finishes, putting his hand on his chin again.
âI feel like you cut a lot out of that story,â Chip says, suspicious.
Jazz smiles, âItâs a good four million years of story, of course I had to cut it down.â
Chip looks like he still doesnât believe it, but turns to leave anyways, âWell, thanks for the explanation.â He moves towards Sideswipe and Bluestreak, leaving Jazz alone. After a moment Jazz picks up the datapad again.
âThat was awful. When did you get so bad at lying?âÂ
âCâmon, most of that wasnât lying!â Jazz says as Mirage appears besides him.
âExactly.â Mirage says, deadpan.
âItâs not like I expected to have to explain it to the humans. Itâs not like I expected a human to try and learn Neocybex!â Jazz waves the datapad at Mirage, âYou were the one to teach him that, so if anything then thisâs your fault.â
âPlease, I barely taught him anything,â Mirage replies. âMaybe you should have remembered to- what was Bumblebeeâs phrase?â
âShut it about Bumblebeeâs phrases.â Jazz says, returning to his datapad.
âAh yes. Next time, you should expect the unexpected.â
