Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) opening 4: āRewriteā by ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION. Personally my favorite opening in the series and the most thematically powerful. The animation is also at the top of itās class here.

Rewatching FMA also reminds me like, what a failure it is that My Hero Academia had that episode where Deku realized the huge emotional strain that him hurting himselfĀ and not including her in his decisions has put on his Mom and resolves to do better, but as far as I can tell the narrative completely,,, fuckinā forgets that?
When the same basic thing happens in FMA, as far as Ed and Winry go, Ed NEVER FORGETS IT.Ā āI will not do things that hurt Winry, and when I donāt value myself or communicate it hurts herā never stops being a thing in Edās mind. He still sometimes acts recklessly but then literally thinksĀ āI fucked up better fix this I promised not to make my girlfriend cryā She is genuinely always in his thoughts.
like other shonen action manga try to replicate this but donāt do the followthrough. Itās just a one episode thing and then itās like BYE CIVILIAN FEMALE CHARACTER BACK TO THE SHELF WEāLL NEVER THINK ABOUT YOUR NEEDS OR THE EMOTIONAL LABOR YOU DO AGAIN but Winryās needs and the moral of valuing her emotional labor and getting her up to date on whatās happening are present throughout the whole narrative. Sheās not an action hero yet she has an arc?? Sheās important? this STILL is never present in all the shonen Iāve seen that have come out since, like somehow arakawa still stands out for grasping this simple concept, we havenāt gotten past this yet.
Can other shonen action manga learn about follow through please.
Edit: Did an entire article about this! Here it is!

ed barely grew at all in 03-shamballa im laughing my head off

Youāll never know what itās like spending your whole life in a dream.
i find ed and alās sins in 03 to be very interesting, because they donāt embody them in obvious ways. how could ed be sloth when heās defined by his action and determination? how could al be wrath when heās defined by his patience and empathy?
because sloth isnāt just laziness, itās apathy and avoidanceāed runs away from the consequences his actions and goals have on the world and other people. and wrath isnāt just violence and anger with others, itās self blame and self destructionāanger and violence toward oneself. and at the end of the day, al blames himself for every death he was unable to prevent, hates himself for still being alive, and ultimately acts out and sacrifices himself to bring ed back, and his dialogue indicates itās not just out of brotherly love, but out of his survivors guilt and self-loathing.

the opening cutscene to the fma mobile game!
M E R R Y Ā C H R I S T M A S
thereās an agenda at play
from her autobio comics:
#on a darker levelĀ #being from Hokkaido means she has reason to be personally invested in the Ishbal annihilationĀ #because Hokkaido is stolen landĀ #like a lot of other places colonized in the last few hundred yearsĀ #if youāre sensitive to this kind of thingĀ #it gives you a personal stakeĀ #in genocide storiesĀ #that most Japanese people donāt haveĀ #>>Ā #idk i felt the way she handles the genocideĀ #speaks to having been aware of thatĀ #from a formative ageĀ (via whetstonefire)
Those tags are 100% right and Arakawa has confirmed that it was intentional in an interview as she has family that are part Ainu.
So her family history definitely had a role in how she presented the genocide in FMA.
