I am severely disabled, and whether I succeed or fail, this blog will chronicle my attempt to create a business successful enough to support myself and pay for 24 a day care within 5 years and 6 months, all starting from my government disability check.
Since I got my benefits analysis I learned that I’m going to have to explore a new route for my end goal. I’m going to gift all of my work to my friends and let them run the business.  This may change in the future. Rest assured, this dream does not die here. I am very thankful to you folks for all the signal boosts and interest in my games and well-being. If you want, you can follow my personal blog, it’s http://the-iron-god.tumblr.com/. This blog, for now, is finished.

I’m going to summarize my experience with the DVR because there were numerous meetings that will be of absolute no use to anyone. and I want to provide helpful information. Even summarized, this post will be long.Â
TL;DR: The DVR didn’t work for me.
As far as my particular plan goes, the DVR isn’t a fit. You can’t simply seek business information from them. The service is excellent if you seek employment under another, they will help any disabled person find an enjoyable and stable method of gaining a little more money. What they do is they assess your abilities and interests, then help you define a plan to get you into a career doing an interest within your ability, then help you build a team of people to help you execute that plan. I would encourage anyone interested in that to apply.Â
One of the incredibly helpful things that they do is pay another organization to give you a benefits analysis. This completely answers where your money comes from and exactly what will happen if you go down various avenues to work. It shows your options and I was really surprised with how open and lenient some of those options are. For example, there’s a 9 month grace period for testing your career where you can make as much as you want/can and your benefits remain unchanged. Sweet, right? So if you go after employment, get a benefits analysis. It’s at interesting, at the very least.Â
*blog reader voice* “But, Robert, why didn’t that work for you?”Â
The DVR has specific, rigid guidelines that get even more specific and rigid if you seek to start your own business. For example, I went in there with my business model and showed them the stages/steps the business would take to get where I wanna go, steps A, B, C, and D wearing different “hats” at different times... but it doesn’t work that way according to them. You have to pick a career, A, and make that happen. To them a business can only be one thing. So I was like, okay, I’ll pick one that covers all those stages. Yet, I was told that given my level of education and resources that this was nigh impossible simply because I couldn’t do it all RIGHT NOW. But perhaps I should be tested to see where my interests, talents, and education levels are. So I did 3 tests over 2 meetings spaced out over 2 long and idle months... like 6-7 hours of solid interviewing and testing. I took the Career Occupational Preference System (COPS) test which is of no real significance to this conversation (because it just says what you wanna be and we already friggin’ know what I wanna do), the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) Survey Level D (Difficult), and the General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB). Afterwards, they completely changed their tune and were like, “Wow. You could probably do this. However, you absolutely need to go to school for at least 4 years and get credentials.” So, they wanted me to spend 4+ years putting myself in debt to learn a thing I’m already learning for free and not to proceed with earning money now from stuff I’ve already designed, just to get credentials that will impress who exactly? Investors? I showed them I wouldn’t need traditional investors! If I’m the boss, what do I need credentials for? Over and over again they just attempted to force me into this rigid system of proven methods. I don’t want do some something proven and small, I want to do something new and colossal. Their methods make sense in Worker Drone Land or what broken spirits call The Real World but if you talk to WILDLY successful entrepreneurs and other people doing what they absolutely love, they will tell you to run from that trap at light speed. So I closed my DVR case.
I was not very pleased with my DVR meeting. My agent is very new and wasn't prepared at all, they even said they hoped I didn't mind being the guinea pig. I mind. To get DVR's help, I'm supposed to prove that my business is viable by showing them a business plan, and the meeting I went to served the purpose of creating a plan for the plan... just barely. I'm ready to make a business plan now. I was ready last month! My next meeting with them to actually put the plan for the plan into action is another whole month away, May 27th. There were no earlier openings. I seriously question whether, at this pace, I'll make my self-imposed dead-lines. The one useful thing that did come from the meeting was that we scheduled a benefits analysis from a third party. A benefits analysis is a study that will show me how various amounts of profit will impact my government benefits, which is half the reason I even came to the DVR. The third party is suppose to contact me within 2 weeks. I'm contemplating having them pay for benefits analysis, pumping those folks for information, then dropping DVR and having a lawyer help me with incorporation and bylaws. I'm not a happy camper right now.
An opportunity with my tertiary project fell into my lap over the weekend, so let’s talk about that.Â
As I’ve said, I have very limited mobility, yet I love gaming. So I’ve completely designed a very simple program that will allow users to play PC games with nothing but mouse movement, and play them well. I called it MouseMaster.Â
It works by overlaying a semi-transparent wheel over a game that’s running, and it looks like this. (This one is for platformer style games, there’s a different one with different features for first-person games.)
Each of the Command Fields (see picture) can have any number of keyboard key taps, key holds, rapid key repetitions, mouse clicks, mouse holds, rapid mouse taps, scrolling, delays, and auto-click features assigned to it by the user. When the mouse moves over a field, its commands are executed in the game. Command Fields can even be set to load whole wheel configurations previously saved by the user, dynamically swapping out whole control sets on the fly.
After talking to a few disabled friends, I’ll probably charge around $115.
I already have the XML code for the user interface, that’s the easy part. Now I need the underneath layer programmed. I’ll probably hire someone from upwork.com or rent-acoder.com to code it. It’s just a matter of time before I and people with similar limitations can finally play a ton of games! I’m already excited.Â
I got an e-mail on the 23rd (of March), scheduling  my next DVR appointment, which is for the purpose of writing my "Individual Plan for Employment". We'll have 90 days to do that. The DVR agent scheduled me in for April 27th. So I wrote back with, "Is there any way we can meet sooner? If we only have 90 days, I'm loathed to idle away 35 of them." That’s over a third of the allotted time. And I got my reply today informing me there’s no earlier openings, so hopefully this plan writing will go smoothly and that I’m overestimating the complexity of the process.Â

I decided to bug the DVR today and apparently the evaluation period just ended and they mailed my notification letter today. So, before that even arrived, I contacted the next person I’m supposed to have a meeting with. To what end? No clue. I’ll let you know when I know.Â
So I had my first appointment with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) today. It was simply to initiate my evaluation process. While the Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor In Training, which is who the meeting was with, said that this part could take up to 60 days, it probably won’t.Â
Apparently, if you fail to show up for this appointment without letting them know, they close your case. I assume that’s a measure to make sure you’re serious.Â
I had to answer questions about my disability and confirm that I wanted to proceed, then sign release forms saying they were permitted to speak with the people necessary to obtain my medical records for the purposes of proving my disability on paper. I also gave them permission to share information with 2 of my personal care workers.Â
They told me that starting my own business means dealing with added standards and scrutiny as far as what the DVR will help with, and before I had even said what I wanted to do... they used “game designer” as an example of a less favorably looked upon vocation. I immediately began laughing! I’m not discouraged in the slightest.Â
Benefits counseling, which they will provide after I’m accepted, will tell me exactly how my benefits will be affected by different levels of income. That will be hugely helpful. It’s half the reason I signed up! I was relieved to learn that.Â
So now I just wait to be accepted for services, and then the next stage begins.Â
So, I submitted my referral form to the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), using the form on their website, and apparently there's an evaluation period to determine your eligibility. This can take up to 60 days! I'm told that the process can be expedited if you have your medical records with you when they make their first appointment with you. Honestly, I may just let them retrieve those because... I have seen my medical records and nobody wants to be hauling that much chaos around. I'll use the extra time to keep chiseling away at the secondary project.
Once I have the information offered by the DVR, I also plan on hiring a lawyer who specializes in business and government benefits to tell me what DVR might not, given that it is a government agency. That will be expensive, but worth it, especially if what I learn helps anybody reading this.
I haven't mentioned it here, but I do have goals past paying for the outrageous cost of my cares. I am pretty positive that, eventually, I can generate a lot more than the minimum $11,388.13 needed each month. I know incredibly creative, inventive people... idea people. We are constantly coming up with improvements to everything and thinking of things that just should exist in the world. We're always saying, “Why hasn't a rich person [insert idea here] yet? This needs to exist!” Ultimately, though, nothing becomes of the insight because we don't possess the resources to invest in or knowledge of how to bringing them forth. I decided I'll try my hand at changing that. I want to enable myself and my friends to create, not just a few little things, but on a large scale. I want to give people the opportunity to build a cooler world. I'll make this happen or kick the bucket trying.
So after more communicating with different people at Social Security, they have me looking at this PASS program I briefly mentioned in earlier posts. You can check it out here. I’m suppose to look at the form, decide if it’ll be a help, send it back to my SS contact while she talks to some people at the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. I was about to say the link for the form is broken because it was, but it magically started working right now... I tested it before I typed this and BAM, form. Excellent!Â
Not gonna lie. This feels like it’s moving too slowly. I feel like my momentum hit a mountain loaded with lead ore. It is, however, still moving. This part is somewhat out of my control. People are communicating. Good people. People who follow through. I must be patient and let the ball roll.
One of the things I don’t understand is that if the business is its own entity, and there are already precedents and legal standards set for treating its property and holdings as separate from my own, then how can those properties and holdings count against my benefits? Furthermore, why would I need this PASS program to help me pay for anything when it’s the business that’s paying for everything, not me... and even that will be crowd source funded! These kind of questions are what I need answers for.Â

I must say I lament that I crafted this blog as a side blog. Tumblr makes communication with my followers nigh impossible as a side blog. I’m pretty sure I lost a few for that specific reason. When I get my mailing list up, you folks will be the first to know. I’m looking for an efficient way to do it for free. Personal e-mail accounts are incredibly limiting, and services providing mass e-mail solutions are not cheap. At least, not if you’re on my budget! Right now, the only way I can talk to you is if I publish your asks. So, I apologize if I seem unresponsive!Â
I said that if I got notes, I would show what I did with Currency in my WWII game. It’s nothing new, but I put it below along with a brief talk about why I did it this way.
A lot of games in modern-ish or post-industrial settings simplify money. For example, Modern d20, gives you a Profession skill where ranks represent degrees of wealth. They make money abstract, and generalize your purchasing power. I get it. Who wants to keep track of accounts and taxes and all that other stuff you gotta deal with in real life? Why generalize it though... eckkk... what would D&D be like without gold and silver coins? I wanna see that 15,619 GP on my character sheet after I kill that dragon, haul those sacks of gold home, and imagine my beautiful pile of coins! Not +2 Profession bonus representing a treasure pile about yay big. So in my system, you get actual money and treasure. To keep the complexities out of it, well, there IS a war going on. Worry about that stuff on the boat ride home.Â
Currency
While all manner of paper money was being traded, use of the U.S. Dollar and British Pound was frowned on by Allied forces for its destabilizing effects on other economies, as well as its penchant for encouraging the enemy to spend their looted supply of money. The Allies often issued special versions of Allied Military Scrip to their soldiers, instead, depending on what region they were in. This, of course, only made the U.S. Dollar and British Pound even more valuable on the thriving black market. Cigarettes, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and ammunition were also easily traded commodities used just as often as paper currency.
Exchange rates fluctuated during the war, but for simplicity's sake a very rough fixed exchange rate is provided below.
   1 U.S. Dollar = 0.2 British Pound.
   1 U.S. Dollar = 2.5 German Mark.
   1 U.S. Dollar = 5 Russian Ruble
   1 U.S. Dollar = 5 Polish Zloty
   1 U.S. Dollar = 35 French Frank.
If, by chance, you need the cost of something in USD, it's not in this chapter, and comparing it to the prices of similar items here just isn't doing the trick, you can take the USD cost of the modern equivalent and divide it by 13.8942 to adjust for inflation.  Of course, there were other economic factors to consider, but that's the big one.Â
Since commodities and contraband were commonly traded, I’m working on a nice and robust items list for this chapter... comprehensive but simple and organized.
I have been working on the Equipment chapter for my WWII RPG. I just finished the clothing section. You can check it out below. If I get any notes, I’ll also show you what I did with Currency.Â
  Clothing
You probably don't wanna run around naked. Here, you can buy sets of clothes called an “outfit”. An outfit includes the entire get-up. Foot wear, hats, gloves, scarves, capes, belts, and under garments are all part of the package. Jewelry isn't included, nor are any medical accessories such as canes or glasses. Depending on the type of Outfit, clothing may provide protection against certain conditions or minor hazards, but it is not armor. Armor has its own section. If desired, you can specifically purchase the bottoms, the upper portion covering the torso and arms, or the footwear of an outfit for 30% of its cost. Small accessories like gloves, hats, or sashes may be had for 10% of the outfit's cost.
When the character travels over long distances, the GM should consider the manner in which they travel how their attire holds up. After a character takes damage as the result of violence, an outfit is likely damaged as well.
Cold Weather Outfit (Rugged) $32.38
Functional protection from the harshest of frigid environments. It includes a down- insulated nylon coat with a hood and/or hat, down-insulated  nylon pants, down-insulated and durable boots, thick gloves, a wool scarf, and insulating undergarments.
Cold Weather Outfit (Nice) $107.60
Somewhat more stylish protection from the harshest of frigid environments. It includes a fur-lined and down-insulated leather or cashmere coat with a hood or hat, down-insulated cashmere pants, fur-lined and durable leather boots, cashmere gloves, a cashmere scarf, goggles, and insulating undergarments.
Dress (Cheap) $2.50
An uncomplicated cut made of sub-standard fabric or with poor seems, probably colored with dull dyes. It may include shabby shoes.
Dress (Nice) $25.20
A well made dress with an elegant pattern. It can include tasteful shoes.
Dress (Luxurious) $864.10
A number crafted of the finest materials and quality by the most famous designers.
Formal Outfit (Nice) $14.50
This includes most uniforms. Bellhop, butler, flight attendants, military, and police uniforms are all examples of formal outfits. Tuxedos and other ceremonial garb, such as a Judge's robes and wig or priestly vestments, are also Formal Outfits. Theatrical costumes may also be considered Nice Formal Outfits.
Formal Outfit (Luxurious) $575.76
The kind trappings worn by nobility and hereditary rulers to important occasions.
Night Outfit (Common) 86¢
A good night shirt. Basic sleeping attire.
Night Outfit (Nice) $11.25
Sleeping attire cut from silk or cashmere, designed to make you look good without sacrificing comfort.
Outfit (Cheap) $3.60
A set of clothes poorly thrown together or crafted using low quality, inexpensive cloth, and colored with dyes that fade quickly.
Outfit (Common) $8.25
A single set of average quality, conventional attire.
Outfit (Nice) $17.60
A set of conventional clothing made from higher end fabrics like silk, leather, and cashmere; colored with rich dyes that are slow to fade.
Outfit (Luxurious) $298.68
Only slightly less ostentatious than the Luxurious version of the Formal Outfit, this set of clothing is a most modern piece of fashion from the most prestigious of designers, made of the very best of rare materials. The cost includes the service of tailoring the outfit to you.
Outfit (Rugged) $16.90
A set of work or rough traveling clothes which focus on durability and function over style. A smith's attire with it's leather apron, the leather chaps and gloves worn by a rancher, or a lumberjack clad in thick wool and leather are all fine examples of a Rugged Outfit.
Outfit (Scrap) $1.50
A doctor's scrubs, a mechanic's or janitor's jumpsuit, a cook's apron and smock are examples of this kind of outfit. A cheap, clean covering meant to be dirtied and replaced. Â
Robe (Common) $1.90
A bed or bath robe made of cotton or wool.
Robe (Nice) $20.15
A warm, high quality bed or bath robe made of cashmere or silk. Â
Suit (Cheap) $21.50
Every self-respecting male has to have at least one presentable three-piece suit. This one just barely qualifies. It hasn't been tailored specifically to fit you, the fabric or stitching is sub-par, and there may be gaudy striping involved.
Suit (Nice) $75
Every self-respecting male has to have at least one presentable three-piece suit. This outfit is tailored to fit you perfectly and cut from good quality fabric. The cost includes the service of tailoring the outfit to you.
Suit (Luxurious) $455
This three-piece habiliment is the envy of all other suits, artfully cut in the most contemporary fashion from the finest of fabric. To wear this is to proclaim your extreme wealth and fine taste. The cost includes the service of tailoring the outfit to you.
Well, it’s been a while! I’ve done some writing for the WWII game. that process will continue for quite a while. I’ve been in contact with the Aging & Disability Resource Center, and they hooked me up with a specialist who deals with SSI benefits, who in turn gave me the contact information for a supervisor at Social Security best suited to help me navigate my options. I’m calling her first thing Monday. Also reached out to the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation but haven’t heard back yet. I’m slowly moving up the ladder to the best sources of information. Wish it was faster!Â
I have also been researching the best way to use Kickstarter, and discussing that with Smart Passive Income Community on Facebook. It seems that I need to get a mailing list started, like, yesterday.Â
Also, I decided on a company name, and with the help of another horrendously talented artist friend (her tumblr is here) who also has experience in logo design, I have a killer logo. But you folks don’t get to see it until I register the business’s name. HAH.Â
Well, the follower contest is over! And I’m glad I get to give you folks somethin’! The faction that won, the “underdog faction” is The Cuban Revolutionaries!Â
They were very underdog-like, indeed, as there was only 1 person who joined that faction. And since I payed for more than merely 1 prize, the second runners up... which are The Tibetan Monks... also win!Â
If you joined either faction, shoot me an ask with your Steam name and I’ll gift you the game.Â

Well, this week I’ll be moving some of my personal finances around to prep for incorporation and researching/writing some of the equipment chapter for the secondary project. (I have another good resource for WWII gear, thanks to adventuresinozrpg.)
When I started the blog, someone from the Aging & Disability Resource Center  saw it and contacted me, wanting to help set me up with a plan. I’ll probably end this week or start next week by speaking with her.
Also, you still have 9 days left to opt into my follower contest!Â
