i am laughing about the first time ilya gets tricked into taking over for a game of "catch me" at a pool with the pike kids because hayden and shane both had the background experience to stay REAL quiet when that game started up.
because i feel like the "jumping into a pool for an adult to catch you" is a game you only play with like. A Trusted Known Family Friend Adult. so i feel like ilya tragically doesn't have the background to understand that heeding the "uncle ilya! catch me!" one time means that is now. how his day is going to go. there are four of them and they are lining up to take turns. ilya does NOT get a break. he is catching kids and then moving them back to climb back out and then getting ready to catch the next one.
man is a professional athlete and yet still??? wakes up the next day??? SORE????
I think both Shane and Ilya would be the type of parents that want to talk to their child and explain things, just so they understand how Shane and Ilya see the situation.
So their child does something stupid and possibly life threatening and tries to hide it: Shane would be overwhelmed by how close they were to experience an absolute tragedy and would ground them immediately without any explanation because everything would be too much at that point, while Ilya would try to talk to them and find out why they did something so stupid then he would need timeout for himself because there was no reason, just plain stupid. They both believe that they should never shrink from serious conversations, it's just that Shane needs a minute to collect himself before going back to their room and having a real talk with them and Ilya needs pauses throughout the talk for his sanity.
Hollanov Jr. just chilling in their room, waiting for Ilya to exit so Shane can have a serious conversation with them that will be interrupted by Ilya's attempts to make sense out of the situation before leaving the room again to go for his 5th walk of the hour with Anya.

the more i see it, the sadder and sadder i get at the trope the fandom has developed that any time shane and ilya are in a fight, or whenever the boston teammates gets involved post-tuna melt, everyone around them just automatically assumes that whatever went wrong MUST have been something ilya did. and i fully admit that i have had so much fun reading the fics of boston stealing Shane's number to be like "pls pls take him back we are BEGGING" (and absolutely zero shade to anyone who's ever written that, i love you all and it's hilarious) but the fact that it's almost always also "he can fix whatever he did wrong, we're sure it's his fault" just has me in my feels today. and if they're in a fight post-tlg and the centaurs get involved, there's this attitude of "what did roz do now?"
maybe i'm just thinking about it all too deep, but ilya has basically spent his entire life being blamed or shouldered with excess responsibility, and even when it amuses me it ends up making me sad the more i see this trope that even at these higher points in his life away from russia, ilya still seems to have no one in his corner who would stand up for him or take his side. i honestly think that shane, even if he was pissed as hell at his husband, would resent the implication that it must be ilya's fault (even if it WAS) or the fact that someone, even their closest friends, felt they had a right to comment on it. he is and always will be ilya's number one defender, enabler, supporter, and would not stand for the implication that they do not have equal footing in this relationship, even when it makes him look bad because you know what?? HE'S the one who started the fight actually, because HE was being an asshole and an idiot, and ilya actually did NOTHING WRONG THANK YOU VERY MUCH, so keep his husband's name OUT OF YOUR GODDAMN MOUTH
