Stimulants are probably the major category you think of when you think of ADHD meds. These can include amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse, and others), methamphetamine (Desoxyn), methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, and others). Stimulants work by increasing Dopamine and Norepinephrine in the brain.

Non-stimulants include atomoxetine (Straterra), clonidine ER (Kapvay), and guanfacine ER (Intuniv). The first one works by making norepinephrine stay in your system longer, and the latter two are blood pressure medications that are approved for ADHD treatment. Also, many antidepressants can be used to treat ADHD and depression that comes from it.

I feel like many people on medication for ADHD don't know a lot about the medication they're taking, what its expected results are, what its side effects may be, etc. I heavily encourage anyone on ANY medication to not only read the insert paperwork you get with it, but also research online from trusted sources.
