Sketching around the Stow Lake Boathouse with the SF Sketchers meetup group.
Drawing tall ships in Sausalito with the SF and North Bay Sketchers meetup groups. Thanks to the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority for visiting with your beautiful ships!
A couple of location sketches from the California Academy of Sciences, since today’s a free day for my neighborhood. I’m experimenting with larger page sizes - the flooded forest one is on 11x17 Bristol board.
Just to get us caught up, here are some sketches from the Chinese New Year parade in downtown San Francisco. Hm, it feels like Tumblr lends itself to a lot less explanatory babble, so count yourselves lucky.

One more from the Costume Carnival - a panoramic montage of all the models, costumes, and scene-setting props gathered by model coordinator Sarafina and her troupe.
After years of fighting with Blogger, I think it's time to embrace the modern era and move my art blog over to Tumblr. Hello, all! To start with, here's a batch of life drawings from Saturday's Costume Carnival at the Academy of Art's Illustration department. The theme this time was "Saturday Morning Cartoons."
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and enjoy a seasonal Krampus!
I pretty much went off the rails halfway through Inktober, but since then I've been working away on a comic based on that same crypto-zoo concept. Just for fun, here's a little montage of some of the featured creatures. (No, these aren't all to scale - Cadborosaurus is of course much bigger.)
Day 17: Here's an Inktober special edition from today's trip to the California Academy of Sciences. Behold, a bunch of skulls! Happy Halloween!

Day 16: Well, Inktober is halfway over, and I'm going to have to skip the next couple days because I'll be slaving away on a comics project. But in the meantime, here's a group shot of some of my favorite cryptids and bestiary beasties from the previous installments.
Day 15: In today's Inktober we see an example of habitat enrichment. The ball serves as a source of entertainment for the dingonek, who likes to punch holes in it with his formidable tusks.
Day 14: Another late night finishing up my daily Inktober drawing! Today we visit the crypto-zoo's Night Gallery, where nocturnal cryptids cavort for your edification. Pictured here are the Flatwoods Monster, the Mothman, and the Dover Demon.
Day 13: You've seen the cryptozoo and the crypto-petting zoo. Now, in today's Inktober, we witness the crypto-aquarium! Its inhabitants include the feejee mermaid, the Montauk monster, and the enigmatic globster.
Day 12: Getting back into the Inktober routine. According to Rilke, the unicorn is nourished "not with corn, but always only with the possibility it exists." Like Tinkerbell, it survives thanks to our belief and attention, so it seems like a natural fit for a petting zoo.

A little behind on my Inktober drawings, not least because I spent Saturday drawing at the Academy of Art's Halloween-themed Costume Carnival workshop. Please enjoy this mummy as a placeholder!
Day Nine: I was out all day drawing at the San Francisco Zoo, so I'll take a break from the cryptozoo series and give you a feeding time sketch for today's Inktober. The bars are subtracted by artist's fiat; you really shouldn't try this at home.
