i get why people don't believe in marriage as a social construct but legally it is the best and easiest way to say "this is who i trust to take care of me when i can't take care of myself" and i'm so glad gay people fought for that right bc when shit gets scary at least i know im in good hands

This is how I convinced my conservative grandma that the gays do also need marriage, actually. My grandad died when I was 4 and I asked her to imagine not being allowed to see him or make decisions for him or be entitled to an inheritance and she got very quiet and conceded the point. Marriage doesn't intrinsically mean anything but as a legal framework it is really, really important

#now imagine a better world in which you can easily allow others to take care of you/see you/make decisions for you/get inheritance/etc –#– without tying it to all of the additional connotations and meanings of marriage; in which you could undo the contract without needing to–#– fight for a divorce; and in which your ability to make these individual agreements with people wasn't dependent on –#– marriage equality laws which btw are STILL not something we fully have.#in the US disabled people can't get married without losing their income.#polyamorous people can't marry all their partners and are forced to pick one over the others.#many states still explicitly outlaw gay marriage and only allow it because the supreme court decision overrides that.#which is not a particularly stable position for a right to have (see post- roe v wade america).#yes within our current system marriage is often a useful tool and we need to fight for people's right to make these contracts#(if u live in virginia please make sure to vote to legalize gay marriage this november)#and also#it is a flawed and coerced tool and there's no reason why the right to make agreements like ''this person is allowed to visit me –#– in the hospital'' or etc need to be tied so closely with all this. with completely legally binding yourself to another person forever*.
