After they meet Rocky both of the boys forget to mention that they are siblings and after watching human shows learns that humans that share last names are mates so he just works under that assumption (and that they are doing the gross leaky human mate stuff while he's asleep)

No one realizes this until they are about to reach Erid and Rocky says something along the lines of

Rocky: so after we land i will say these alien mates helped me find the solution to the sun dying we have to give them a home here

Colt&Ryland: MATES???

Just Rocky treating them like they are married and neither realizing that because thats just how they are

i wonder if they’re established already, or rocky calling them mates makes them realize just how much they do act like a couple and suddenly it’s awkward because they’re unsure if that was intentional from the other or if they’re reading into it too much…

cue the mutual pining idiots in love with rocky Tired Of Their Shit because despite that new awkwardness they literally act the exact same way and they’re married in every way except legally

Ryland is conflicted on one hand thats the voice he uses to teach his students and the other they way Colt looks at him, eyes wide desperate to be a good boy

you can’t just say this to me and expect me to feel normal about it

i loooove the Teacher Voice. i feel like ryland does it accidentally, he just kind of instinctually slips into it. and it isn’t until colt’s staring at him with wide, attentive eyes that he even realizes what happened

he doesn’t quite get why it has such an effect on colt, but he makes note of it for later. it’s the quickest way to get colt to listen to him, especially when it’s paired with a request or command (ie, “hand me that” or “stand here, please”). every time, colt snaps to attention and obeys

god forbid ryland is chiding colt with that voice… colt doesn’t know whether to be more chastised or turned on, but it’s usually both

ryland also totally slips into Teacher Voice when rambling about something sciency that colt doesn’t really understand and it gets him to pay attention so fast

it all comes to a head when ryland finally confronts colt about it and it goes something like this:

ryland: do you like when i talk to you like i talk to my students?

colt, freezing: uh.

ryland, Teacher Voice activated: do you, colt?

colt: Yes.

ryland: okay, interesting. why?

colt, sweating: it’s……… hot.

ryland: it’s hot? how so?

colt, steadily turning red: can you stop. it’s— i’m. going to pass out.

ryland, intrigued and amused and getting some Ideas: sure. but we’re revisiting this.

anon i’ll be honest, it’s unlikely. like maybe i’ll have a month or so long phase if i rewatch mha but that’s a big IF…. otherwise i doubt it, sorry 😔
