A FAREWELL TO PODCAST: Because the Dinosaur Went Extinct

Haver you read Ian Malcolm and not just seen him portrayed on film by (the nothing short of a-freaking-mazing actor) Jeff Goldblum? The Ian Malcolm in Michael Crichton’s books Jurassic Park and The Lost World muses about the extinction of the dinosaur and how if it were not for that seminal event in the course of Earth’s history, primates would never have had a chance on this planet. In other words, thank God dinosaurs went extinct because we humans now rule the world. (That’s according to the two dino books by Crichton.)

TOTL was a dream of mine (Ronald) to turn the light on pop culture with my old college roomie Marlon and church friend Andy.

The idea was sparked by a strange discovery. A set of two of them:

Five years into calling this guy my friend, i found out that this hipsterish person was actually a closet nerd who grew up on and continued to read comic books. That’s Marlon.

Then, Andy. I met him in a church small group. He introduced himself as an Army vet who served at Gitmo and was now studying to become an RN. With his shaven head and goatee, he was a bit intimidating. But on one of those nights after our small group Bible study, I was shocked to find out that this guy was a Trekkie! TNG all the way baby. (If I remember correctly)

I had so much fun nerding out (both pop culturally and theologically) with these friends that I thought, the world needs to hear our conversations.

And I think a lot of you agreed. You who clicked on our links and shared our blogs and photos and videos and audios. Those of you whom we met on the road at conventions. Fellow cosplayers, content creators and nerds. You who have journeyed with us for the past little-over-two-years that we were “on the air.” We thank you.

But at the beginning of this year we came to a realization. We had learned so much. Being TOTL gave each of us new inspiration. We identified dormant gifts & talents and new dreams came to be. 

For Marlon it was this idea that expressing one’s nerd-dom could be (and should be) cool. He started a blog and social media presence that I think has potential to grow into something…extraordinary.

Andy (who had brought in our second sound engineer Josh*) discovered in Josh a common excitement for all things DC whenever they hung out. So out of those conversations was born “DC & Chill,” a new podcast.

As for me, I’ll be putting my nose down into my books as the finish line of that Master of Divinity peeks through on the horizon while at the same time as my screenwriting is blossoming into something more “real.” I’ve been tapped by a veteran producer to co-write a little indie sci-fi titled, All Things.

When we began, none of us had any idea that TOTL would be the dinosaur that gives way to the myriad wonderful creatures that would become…
