"This is another painting in my Memories series. I love finding antique black and white photos that reflect the era they are from. Especially I am drawn to the vintage western genre photos. They give me a glimpse of the actual west from a hundred years ago. This is the Black cowgirl, Nellie Brown. Little is known about her, except for the photograph that inspires this painting. She had a gritty, no-nonsense air. I imagine there wasn't much this cowgirl couldn't accomplish on her own. Even though cowboys of color comprised about 25% of the old west cowboy population, there are very few old images from that era of those cowboys, not to mention cowgirls! I am always digging for those old photos to inspire my art."
