Dreamer vehicles
There are a lot of transportation in Dreamer. Kili takes the day train east from Belegost right at the beginning.
I'm partial to the Italian trains so that's what I had in mind when I wrote his journey to Imladris.
The midnight train going anywhere...
Then there's the sleeper train over the Misty Mountains. All sleeper trains usually looks the same and it's worth forking out for the 3-bed compartment.
I like the bunk in the middle. I enjoy lying with my head towards the window with the window open and just watching the landscape and sniffing the scents coming from flowers and forests in the evening, while watching the sun set. You obviously don't do it in winter.
Then there's the underground in Alduir. I was thinking about naming it the metro at first but in the end I went with the underground. There's a metro in Copenhagen and a U-Bahn in Berlin (and some sorry half-arsed attempt in Malmö that's not even worth mentioning) so why the U-Bahn?
It's yellow.
The film Christiane F - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo had a huge impact on me in my early teens. Also: David Bowie and yellow U-Bahn trains. Heroes is to this day one of my favourite songs (and the album too). the late 70s was a depressing time, not just in Berlin.
However, since I've lived in London, "my" underground is really this:
Mind the gap.
Then there's someone in this story who never takes the underground - or any other public transport for that matter.
They're zipping around Alduir in a Maserati Gran Turismo. White, of course. I can reveal that it's an elf.
That's so not my cup of tea when it comes to cars but if you want a more practical car but still want the racing feel of 1957...
I bet there's a 300S in this elf's garage too.
There's another elf in this story who owns a car. It's not as expensive but fun things happen when you step on it and the V8 roars.
A Mustang from 1966. Green, naturally. Imagine said elf buying it new in the 60s, using it on occasion and doing the regular service that you're supposed to do, never entertaining the idea to change car... because why would you?
In the early 90s there were several movies coming from Ireland that were real hits. Like the Commitments.
Once upon a time I owned a white Mustang hardtop from the second half of the 60s. It drove my neighbours up the wall when I started it at 5 in the morning to drive my then-boyfriend to work (a ferry line between Sweden and Germany). Choke out, turn the key, full gas while you pushed the choke back, or it wasn't a happy car. That V8 did not make excuses for its existence. It had the measliest horn that ever existed, but you didn't need it. You just pressed the gas pedal a bit and the roar dispersed the populace that was in your way. It's not a car that I'd drive to work every day these days (I did it then, in the 90s) but I kind of miss it. (Shout-out to @fostertheory) Fun fact, I have ended up with Ford cars every time I have bought one. I apparently have a type.
We have a vehicle that is deep underground - cue: Jamiroquai, Deeper Underground
... that Kili has been driving, 1,5 km underground. These days they are electric with advanced computer systems.
It's a Sandvik Toro, by the way. Photo op in Kiruna/Giron.
Since Kili is good with machines he gets to drive this little cutie:
It's a Bucher Citycat sweeper machine. We used to call it skarv when I worked with green spaces management, directly translated to gap, though in Swedish it also means the bird cormorant. There are a lot of those along the coast to the sound between Denmark and Sweden.
We also have a road trip coming up in Dreamer and this time it's a car owned by a dwarf that is used.
Volvo XC90. Blue. There are no other colours. If you don't want an actual camper van, this is as close as you get to both an ordinary car and a camper van. The entire back can be folded down so it becomes big flat space, perfect for a camping bed. It has all the Volvo amenities of course. Now, this dwarf did not buy it to go camping but it's a practical car and you come up a bit and get a good overview over the traffic. Thing is, even though I haven't gone with the heights of the dwarves in the films (they are shorter) this dwarf would still not need a booster seat in this car. I have a friend who is 5 ft tall and she's driving one of these. Bloody great car, this is.
Said dwarf has been on the Volvo train a long time, ever since the 1940s.
Blue, of course. I mean, it's not such a big leap between a Volvo PV and an XC90 - not really. This dwarf has owned the classics, like the Amazon, and the 145 (!) as well as the really boring 240, 740 and 940.
Eventually we're also going to meet a motorcycle, a BMW R80G/S.
For anyone unacquainted with motorcycles it's not very interesting but this two-wheeler from the early 80s is one of the first MCs that were made to be both a street MC and an off-road MC.
I'm a bit too young to be allowed to drive an MC on my driver's license (but my mum can, which is hilarious) and I never really cared enough to add MC to my car driver's licence but if I at some point would, I'd get one of those BMW R80G/S motorcycles. It's retro twice over. It's very 1980s but it's also very 1950s, like the MC that my dad drove in his youth; Husqvarna.
But I digress. There's an elf who's driving said BMW for practical reason because sometimes a car isn't all that great when roads are treacherous.
The helmet this elf is using is...
An Arai helmet. They are crazy expensive, but as versatile as the BMW MC. And they come in blue (and matte black, which would be my go-to colour).
Did I miss a vehicle? I don't think so.
