THE GOLDEN GIRLS 2.03, “Take Him He's Mine”
"you're kidding, right?" aisha asked with a brow raised and hand on her hip, standing back to take in their decorating skills. while she technically admonished her pseudo-coworker, it came out in her signature teasing tone. "i've never seen something so crooked. you need serious help." she stepped forward, gesturing for them to pass the poster in their hands.
val peered over their shoulder at the sound of aisha’s critique. “it’s avant-garde.” they said mockingly with a tilt of their head, aligning their view to the angle they had taped the first side of the poster at. they were already reluctantly participating and it took almost no effort for her to let the poster slide into aisha’s hands. “sold. it’s your problem now” they handed aisha the roll of tape and stepped back, giving the girl space to fix the alignment. “but if that tape fails in twenty minutes i am officially not responsible for it, and i’m telling everyone you ruined my vision.”
seeing some idiot bust their ass was not necessarily on maverick's bucket list for the night, but it sure as hell should have been. he ducks into pixel palace to hide the face behind his uproar of laughter, losing himself quickly in the dark between the machines, occasionally lit up by a flashing screen. when he's calmed himself a bit, he heads back towards the front; the cinema is just next door, and he really ought to be heading back over before he gets into some sort of trouble - he was still meant to be doing inventory, after all. before that though, he meets up with the person actually working here at the moment, and peers around to see if the unfortunate klutz has managed to recover. "man, did you see that?" he asks, a touch of laughter returning in his tone. the humor has lit him up from the inside; he is awake, alive, real. "that had to have hurt."
they didn't want to be right, but chaos was usually what kept val entertained and she seemed to have a sixth sense for it at this point. "fully saw it coming" they triumphed as maverick's face appeared, lit up both by the glow of neon lights and the thrill of pandemonium. "oh that absolutely hurt. a total disaster, it was beautiful.” val's fingers traced over the edge of the camera lens that was used to capture the scene. "are you going to go back next door like a model employee or or did you duck in here because you knew i was the only person in this mall who wouldn't judge you for laughing at a medical emergency?”
daphne had absolutely no reason to be inside pixel palace. technically, she’d been sent to find more tape for the displays nearly fifteen minutes ago, but somewhere between the darkened movie theater hallway and the weirdly unsettling silence near the arcade, she’d gotten distracted. the sound of val’s voice crackling through the walkie made her snort before she even stepped fully into the neon lit arcade, gaze landing immediately on the brunette perched on the counter like she owned the place. “you’re actually evil,” daphne announced, clutching the roll of tape against her chest as she wandered closer, carefully stepping around half opened boxes scattered across the carpet. “like, genuinely. if somebody dies, you realize that becomes a whole thing, right? there’d be memorials. probably local news coverage.” she paused beside the prize counter, eyeing the mess of inventory with visible disgust before looking back at val, eyes suddenly full of wonder. “but … that means we’d be interviewed and on tv right? oh em gee, imagine … annual sunset mall lock in, ends in tragedy, that’s so macabre, everyone a ccc would be in awe.”
val didn’t even look up from her camera lens at first, adjusting the focus followed by a slow click before finally letting her gaze drift to daphne. an amused, lazy smile tugged at the corner of her mouth as she watched her wander in, clutching a roll of tape like a security blanket. "i prefer documentarian" she corrected, leaning back against the marquee of the prize counter. "welcome to my minefield." she gestured with her chin toward the cluttered floor, completely unbothered by her own ever accumulating mess. val watched as daphne's face turned from disgust to wonder. "that'd be some press release, we'd be true crime icons by monday." she hopped down from the counter, her boots hitting the carpet with a dull thud. "or, more likely, we'd be getting a 10 second clip on the local news between the weather report and a segment about a dog that can ride a skateboard." she leaned against the glass of the prize display. "and the memorial wouldn't be grand. it would be a single, dusty plushie from the claw machine left outside the entrance with a candle. truly devastating."

Ironically, he had been balancing just fine on the unsteady ladder until the radio crackled & emitted a high frequency beep. He heard the warning too late - he had already swore & jumped, causing the ladder to collapse and him to fall with it. "Fuuuck," Perhaps being an adrenaline junkie had been a blessing, as his body seemed to naturally know how to land to cause as little damage as possible. Still, he had had the wind knocked out of him and knew his back might be screaming tomorrow. He grabbed the radio attached to his jeans. "Whoever criticized my light hanging...fuck you...and get your picture while you have the chance."
the spectacular, metallic crash echoing through the mall was followed by a split second of dead silence, and then nate’s voice crackling through the static, cursing val out. an amused smirk took over her face as she jumped off the counter and approached the entry of the arcade. "the exposure is already set, stuntman. don't move a muscle," val said into the walkie, her voice lined with satisfaction. with a fluid motion, she uncapped the lens of her camera and captured the disaster of the fallen ladder, tangled lights and nate sprawled out on the ground, looking too comfortable for someone who just plummeted from the ceiling. she lowered the camera, letting it dangle against her ribs as she stopped a few feet away, her hands sliding into her pockets. "beautiful form on the landing, 8/10. for the record, i was judging your situational awareness more than the lights, but now they're about on par."

often, the late - night shifts were oliver's and oliver's alone. he was always the first employee to sacrifice himself, lamb to the slaughter, if his colleagues needed to finish early, to get away quick for a hot date. the law student himself couldn't remember the last time he had a hot date, or any date at all for that matter, and so the ghostly clattering of stray pinballs and the whirr of aging machines was usually the only noise to keep him from losing sanity entirely. that night, though, val had lingered, and he chuckled at the crackle of the walkie talkie. “it's like people are angling for a lawsuit. claimants forget about the little invention known as the security camera. i don't think anyone would be able to defend them if they fell.” lawful jargon, something that oliver filled his mind with whenever the arcade was empty or on those long and lonely late shifts. he just hoped he could retain it all for when he returned next year. “that's the thing about this place, isn't it ? you always feel like you're being watched.”
val let out a dry snort - leave it to oliver to turn a casual threat of workplace injury into courtroom strategy. "i'd love to see the footage once it's pulled for evidence, your honor." val was more interested in providing ambient noise than actually completing the required tasks of the night, but she had a stubborn habit of lingering loitering. "you need to stop studying during the summer, ollie, you sound like a narc." val said, with no real bite behind her tone. she picked up a box and looked up into a corner of the room, following the line of vision of one of the security cameras. "that's because we are being watched..." she placed the box back down in the exact pocket of shadow alongside the skee-ball ramp, where the lens could never tilt low enough to see. "unless you know the blind spots." val leaned her shoulder against the mesh of the skee-ball cage, her eyes shifting from the camera back to him.
It was approaching midnight, and Pixel Palace was currently a ghost town of blinking neon lights and half-opened boxes of prize counter toys. Val was sitting cross-legged on top of the prize counter, eyeliner smudged from a rub of her wrist. She had managed to get through most of the required inventory by guesstimating and was now actively avoiding unpacking the rest of the junk counter prizes. Val picked up the walkie talkie and pressed down on the talk button. "To whoever is currently hanging string lights near the main walkway: that ladder looks structurally unsound, and if you fall, I'm taking a picture before thinking about calling for any help. Carry on." She tossed the radio onto the counter, waiting to see who would brave the dim arcade aisles to complain about her attitude.
❛ [ ☼ ] : ( lizeth selene , genderfluid , she/they ) omg … was that ROSA DIAZ i just saw clocking in?! no ?? oh, i guess it was just VALERIA "VAL" TORRES then. they’re THE TRAINWRECK i was telling you about … you know, the TWENTY-TWO year old SENIOR, who’s been away studying PHOTOGRAPHY at COLUMBIA COLLEGE CHICAGO ? word around town is they’re back home for what’s apparently their FOURTH summer working at sunset plaza — not counting the one where she got caught sneaking onto the mall roof with a stolen master key ring. this time around, they’re working as an ASSISTANT MANAGER at PIXEL PALACE while trying to save up some extra cash for A VINTAGE CAMERA AND BULK ROLLS OF 35MM FILM, but you didn’t hear that from me … from their interview, you’d probably guess they’re PERCEPTIVE and CREATIVE , but anyone who’s worked a closing shift with them knows just how RECKLESS and ESCAPIST they can get after spending all day listening to CELEBRITY SKIN by HOLE looping through the sunset’s speakers. though, with the way employees have been disappearing lately, let’s just hope they survive the summer long enough to make it back to campus.
