It’s March and you know what that means… That’s right, it means that it’s time for March Madness! To most people March Madness means college basketball, but to us at Topic Thunder it means something entirely different. Last year we had an epic bracket of Disney villains (listen to that episode here: http://bit.ly/2mh4TF1). This year we decided to do a bracket of our most beloved cereal mascots. They will face off against each other with 3 major categories being the driving force for whether they move on or not. These categories are taste of cereal, style and personality, and whether they would win in a fight verse their opponent. Leading up to the release of the actual episode on March 17th, we will be previewing all of the seeds. Last but certainly not least, we have the 1-seeds.

The 1-Seeds

After much deliberation these mascots have distinguished themselves as the cream of the crop. Pretty much the only thing that can stop these mascots from winning the whole thing is a wacky theory proposed by the Topic Thunder guys.

Tony The Tiger

When you think cereal mascot, you think Tony the Tiger. This guy is about as iconic as it gets. He represents Frosted Flakes, sugar-coated corn flakes, which is a go to cereal for a lot people. It’s simplistic flavor is both delicious and satisfying. A tremendous role model and a stellar athlete, Tony can pretty much do anything. The one thing that creeps me out about him is that he is always watching people eat Frosted Flakes in their houses. It’s just weird. “they’re Great!” is probably the most recognized catch phrase of the cereal world. Being a massive tiger won’t hurt Tony, but they don’t call it March Madness for no reason.

Lucky The Leprechaun

Lucky the Leprechaun is has one of the most loved cereals of all time. With colorful marshmallows, people absolutely love Luck Charms. He has a pretty solid outfit and he has magical abilities which will serve him well as fighter. The only major problem with Luck is that... he’s kind of a dick. Most cereal mascots are more than willing to give their cereal to hungry children, but not this guy. Not only will he not give them cereal, he also leads them deep in to forests, never to be seen again. He’s basically a horror movie cliche with a happy facade. Although he’s a major asshole, he definitely possesses the qualities and skills to go all the way in this tournament.

Snap, Crackle, Pop

Rice Krispies... as a cereal they are kind of blehhh, but as Rice Krispie treats are DOPE. The only thing you need to get past is that video of the guy peeing into a vat of Rice Krispies. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Google it. Anywa, these tiny elves are huge icons. They are just as recognizable as any other mascots. I don’t know what your standard elf outfit is, but if you had to imagine one, it would probably look something like what these guys are wearing. Being a threesome may be an advantage for Snap, Crackle, and Pop but being like an inch tall may derail them. They are going to have to hope that their reputation carries them past more physically imposing opponents.

Chef Wendell

Yes, the mascot for Cinnamon Toast Crunch has a name. Chef Wendell is your classic magical old man chef. Cinnamon Toast Crunch is amazing. The combination of cinnamon and sugar is flawless and the individual pieces don’t really get soggy as quickly as other cereals. Single handedly making and promoting the cereal, Chef Wendell is the only mascot who can say that. He seems like a kind old man, but the above picture makes him look slightly crazy. He doesn’t seem very athletically inclined but maybe his cereal magic will be able to bail him out of a tough situation in the fight.

Specifically in the post, the 2-seeds.

The 2-Seeds

Some of the most iconic cereal mascots make up the 2-seeds. An argument can be made for these mascots to be 1-seeds but sadly, these mascots fell just shy of that. Make no mistake, each one of these mascots could easily take home the glory!

Buzz Bee

Buzz Bee is easily one of the most recognizable cereal mascots in existence. His cereal, Honey Nut Cheerios, although simple in nature are actually extremely delicious. Not to mention, it’s the best selling cereal in America. His style leaves a lot to desire, but his upbeat personality more than makes up for it. Even though he is a bee, Buzz is probably the softest bee that ever lived. I. Hate. Bees. but if I ever ran into this guy, I would expect copious amounts of honey and not bee stings. Literally the only thing in Buzz’s way to the top is an equally delicious cereal and a much tougher opponent.

Toucan Sam

Everyone knows who Toucan Sam is. He is an Tropical bird representing the cereal Froot Loops. Although the cereal advertises having multiple flavors, it’s actually only one flavor. Froot Loops are just okay, nothing special, but not terrible. Personality is where Toucan Sam will make a name for himself in this cometiton. Tropical birds are cool and Sam certainly looks the part. He is also a great father figure to the younger toucans often appearing in Froot Loops comercials. He is a stand up bird role model. The real question about Sam is what kind of fighter he’s going to be? He has the ability to fly and a massive beak. It’s going to take a decently intelligent opponent to gain the upper hand and oust Toucan Sam from this tournament.

Trix Rabbit

The Trix rabbit is a odd case. He’s definitely iconic and that may be the only reason that he has earned such a high seeding. One of the most parodied mascots, this guy is almost always the butt of every joke... even in his own commercials. He has, however, appeared in various other commercials for other brands and that’s something not many mascots can say. Trix is a decent cereal. It consists of fruit-flavored, sweetened, ground-corn pieces. As far as fighting goes, this guy is the king of “taking an L.” He almost never wins but maybe this competition will break the endless loss cycle.

Sonny The Cuckoo Bird

This guy... Sonny is an absolute crazy person, but Cocoa Puffs is an absolutely amazing cereal. And the chocolate milk it leaves behind, to die for. As far as personality goes, hes like the Jodie Sweetin of cereal mascots (that’s a meth joke) He is far too crazy to put any clothes on or act like a normal upstanding cereal mascot. It’s this craziness and unpredictability that might give him an edge in fight. Will he peck you with his beak? Will he scratch you with his talons? Will he stab you with a knife? NO ONE KNOWS! Looking like nothing special at first glance, Sonny actually has all the right tools to possibly be crowned as the best cereal mascot.

The 3-seeds

I firmly believe, from here on out, that every mascot has the potential to go the distance, but we will only be looking at the 3-seeds in this preview.

Count “Alfred” Chocula

Easily the best “Monster Cereal,” that’s why he is the only one who managed to make it directly into the bracket. His cereal is chocolate flavored corn bits and marshmallows  and it’s fucking dope. I may be biased but beside one other mascot in who has not been mentioned, this is my favorite cereal. One of the only mascots that you can say has a “style,” Count Chocula sports a slimming cloak and “double Jimmy Neutron” hair with mutton chops. I don’t know who I’m quoting when I say, “double Jimmy Neutron” because honestly, I just made it up... but it works, right? His fighting prowess boasts your standard vampire powers: Bat transformation and other supernatural strengths. This may be a winning combination going forward.

Chip the Wolf/Dog

This dude is a strange. His cereal is a bite size cookie cereal which is decent. it’s clearly not real cookies, but it still somehow works. The personality is where things get really awkward. Starting out as Chip the Dog in the early 90s, He was never really anything special and in the early 2000s he underwent a major identity crisis becoming the much cooler Chip the Wolf. When I say cooler I mean “peaked in high school Rob Lowe” cooler. He’s not fooling anyone with that track jacket. I feel like his only major advantage is being a wolf in a fight. He’s going to need a lot of help to pull off an upset against the much better 2-seeds

Cap’n Crunch

This guy is basically the Johnny Depp of cereals. Captain Crunch cereal is a sugary corn pop cereal. It’s not the worst cereal and its not the best cereal, but it gets the job done. He is you standard cereal pirate captain and he certainly dresses the part. Who knows how good of a fighter he is but he does possess one of the only weapons in the entire tournament. His well roundedness between cereal and overall charcter... and a sword... may be just the right combination to really make waves in this competition.

Dig ‘Em

Dig ‘Em is the mascot of Honey Smacks, a sweetened wheat puff cereal similar to Captain crunch. It’s your standard sweetened cereal. Personality is where Dig ‘Em really wins over the masses. His hip apparel makes him the coolest mascot at the party and personality is nothing short of “Chill AF.” When Dig ‘Em is asked what he thinks of his cereal, he calmly and cooly says, “I dig ‘em.” HOLY SHIT THAT”S HIS NAME!!! Dude is cool, he makes me regret being an absolute nerd for the vast majority of my life. Being a frog won’t do him any favors in a fight, but he does have superior agility from said frogness. Dig ‘Em is either primed for a deep tournament run or an early exit... only time will tell.

One of the play-in mascots from the last preview will become the final 4-seed, but for now we’re going to take a look at the other three.

The 4-seeds

These three mascots barely made the bracket, but some of them may possess just enough firepower to make some waves in the tournament.

Sunny the Sun

To begin our preview we have Sunny the Sun, the mascot for Raisin Bran, a who can be considered a bit of an enigma. Raisin Bran isn’t that great of a cereal comprised of bran flakes and raisins... see what they did there. But as far as personality goes, Sunny is exactly the amount of cheery that one needs to start their day. You would think being a sun would have some sort of tactical advantage in a fight, but Sunny clearly isn’t the hottest sun and I don’t think burying someone in endless scoops of raisins is really going to get it done. unless the matchup is favorable, Sunny seems poised for an early exit.

The Frosted Mini Wheat Guy

Not sure if that’s actually his name or not, but it’s certainly descriptive enough. The cereal is comprised of bite-sized frosted wheat clusters that are surprisingly tasty, although they can be a bit dry without an appropriate milk-cereal ratio. He doesn’t really have any style but what he lacks in style, he makes up with endless positivity. And with him being the size of an actual frosted mini wheat, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where he makes it out of the first round.

Bad Apple and CinnaMon

One of the only mulit-mascot cereals, Apple Jacks is a multi-grain cereal with apple and cinnamon flavor. The flavor seems to be hit or miss to some people but is generally accepted as a passable cereal. They aren’t going to wow you with style and their dynamic can most accurately be described as “complicated.” Being a reggaeton cinnamon stick and an ornery awkwardly small apple with terrible team dynamics, these guys are going to need a pretty wacky scenario to advance out of the first round.

Leading up to the release of the actual episode on March 17th, we will be previewing all of the seeding groups every day this week starting today! We are going to start with the mascots that didn’t quite make the cut but still have one last chance to make the tournament.

The Play in Mascots

Unfortunately these 4 mascots weren’t deemed worthy enough to make it right into the bracket like the other 15 mascots, but all hope isn’t lost yet.

Kellogg Rooster

Out of the four mascots, the Kellogg Rooster might have the best chance to make it into the bracket and potentially upset some of the mascots. Will start by breaking down the taste of it’s represented cereal. Corn Flakes’ taste won’t really get you excited about anything, but it has been one of the most iconic cereals in the market. As far as personality goes… it’s a rooster. There isn’t much to it, but it is the overall mascot of the brand as well as Corn Flakes and not many other mascots can say that. It’s fighting prowess leaves a lot to be desired, but you never really know what we’ll come up with for battle strategy so you can’t quite count it out.

Boo Berry

One of the “Monster Cereals,” Boo Berry is a blueberry flavored corn cereal with marshmallows, which is actually pretty good! His style is ghost chic, sporting a derby hat and bow tie and his personality is reflective of a stoner version of Casper the ghost, and who wouldn’t want to hang out with that? His ability to fight will bank solely on how far his ghost powers can carry him, and based on some of the other mascots in the tournament, it may not be very far…

Yummy Mummy

Also considered one of the “Monster Cereals,” Yummy Mummy is a frosted fruit-flavored cereal with vanilla marshmallows, which is also very tasty, but also very discontinued. His pink and yellow mummy wraps are a slight upgrade over your average mummy but honestly he seems kind of lame… Fighting is probably his best area boasting mummy strength and maybe some supernatural qualities. Out of the four play-ins, Yummy Mummy is probably the best fighter.

Franken Berry

Last but not least, we have Franken Berry. Another mascot from the “Monster Cereals,” Franken Berry is a strawberry flavored corn cereal with marshmallows, which is similar to Boo Berry, but also turned kid’s poops pink…Style wise he looks like Dr. Frankenstein probably had a little too much to drink before creating him and his personality reflects someone who may have had too much to drink as well. No one wants to socialize with the drunkest kid at the party. As far as fighting goes, Franken Berry is probably pretty strong, but he may not possess enough smarts to fully utilize that.
