She clung to his arm like a koala as their plane sat at the end of the runway, San Francisco Bay barely visible through the thick fog outside the oval window.
"The pilots can see, right?" she asked.
"Yes, baby," he responded, kissing her on the temple. "Hundreds of planes fly in and out of this fog every day."
She knew that, but her fear of flying wasn't calmed by facts. This was the first time she's been on a plane since she had to fly to her uncle's funeral four years ago. And that flight was barely more than 90 minutes. When she took off today, she would be in the air for nearly six hours. And then—unless a wing fell of the plane or the pilots both had heart attacks or gravity suddenly decided to become twice as strong—she would land in New York City.
The plane began to accelerate. She hugged his arm tighter as they sped down the runway and started to tilt upward. She shifted in her seat, the crinkle of her diaper masked by the hum of the engines. And they were in the sky.

Three months earlier, on a typically gloomy San Francisco morning, they lazed in bed together, tapping and scrolling on their phones.
"If I went to that conference in New York, would you come with me?" she asked.
He turned slowly in her direction, his face displaying a mix of shock and amusement, as if she had just asked, "if I became a lion tamer, would you come to my circus?"
"New York?" he asked in response. "New York the city that's all the way on the other side of the country? Shall we make the journey by boat or by steam engine?"
"I'm serious! Getting asked to speak at this conference is a really big deal and I feel silly saying no just because I'd have to fly. So I was thinking that, as long as you were there with me and as long as I could wear my seatbelt the whole time, I could probably deal with the airplane."
He was flooded with affection and admiration for her.
"Of course I'll come with you," he said, rolling on his side to face her. "I would love to come with you! I'll go anywhere with you! But may I respectfully point out one potential issue with this plan?"
"You may." She pecked him on the lips. "Respectfully."
"Respectfully, you have the world's smallest bladder. You pee every 15 minutes. I don't want to discourage you from making this trip, but sweetie, you're going to have to be okay with taking your seatbelt off a few times. It's perfectly safe."
"Nope, seatbelt will be staying on. I'll figure it out."
"Baby, figure what out? Are you not going to have anything to drink for a day before the flight? I know you're not skipping coffee. You get grouchy when you skip coffee."
"Hey!" She swatted him on the arm. "I am not grouchy when I skip coffee. I'm grumpy. There's a difference. Anyway, I have a plan. Would you like to hear my plan?"
"Okay, Miss Grump, let's hear your plan."
"It's a serious plan. So no laughing."
He lowered his eyebrows to make a serious face. "I'm ready. Serious plan."
"I'm going to buy diapers," she declared. "Really, really big diapers."
Despite her instructions, he laughed. (How could he not?) And he rolled on top of her. "I love you so much. You're a weird girl. Respectfully."
She kissed him. "I love you too. Thank you for coming with me. And thank you for going along with my plan."

The taxi crawled through traffic on its way to the hotel. This was her first time in New York and there was no way she was getting in an Uber when there was a line of iconic yellow NYC taxis waiting outside the airport.
"I feel like Annie," she mused, gazing out the window at the dusky Manhattan skyline rising in the distance.
"The orphan?" he asked.
"Yeah, she comes to New York and sings a whole song about it."
"I'm so happy that you worked up the courage to get on the flight. And I can't believe you slept through almost the whole thing. I watched two whole movies while you were zonked out."
"I just felt really comfy and safe with you next to me," she said. "Plus, it's impossible to be nervous when you're asleep."
He rubbed her thigh and lowered his voice to a whisper. "May I ask you a very personal question?"
She locked eyes with him. She knew the question already.
"It's absolutely soaked." she said, giggling at the absurdity of actually going through with her "plan."
She took his hand and put it between her legs.
He pressed his fingers into her swollen padding. It was thick and heavy, firm and a little squishy. "Wow baby, how many times did you pee?"
She shushed him and motioned to the cab driver. "I told you! I bought the most absorbent ones I could find."
"These are the diapers they make just for girls with plans to wet their pants on airplanes?" he teased.
"Yep!" she said. "Exactly what it said on the package. And this wasn't part of the plan, but maybe they're for airplanes and also taxis stuck in traffic."
"World's smallest bladder," he said. "We gotta get you in the Guinness Book."

The conference organizers put her up in a five-star hotel, in a room on the 38th floor with big windows framing a view of the city, a beautiful jumble of buildings.
Just after three in the morning, he woke up to find himself alone in the hotel's king bed. He spotted her standing at the window in her sleep shirt and no bottoms, her butt cheeks peeking below its hem.
"Giving the neighbors a show?" he asked, with vocal cords that were still half asleep.
She smiled and turned to him. "Hey. Why are you awake?"
"Why are you awake?" he responded. "You have a big day tomorrow."
"I think I'm awake precisely because I have a big day tomorrow," she said. "I don't know. It's going to be a big crowd and all of the other speakers have presented at big conferences like this before and I wanna do a good job and I'm just anxious."
He got out of bed and joined her at the window. He held her around her waist from behind.
"Baby, you were such a brave girl getting on the plane this morning. I was so proud of you. You're always giving me reasons to be proud of you. You can do anything."
"Thank you," she said, leaning her back into his big chest. "It was really helpful to have you there with me."
"You're so welcome, baby. Can I suggest something that I think will help you feel better?"
"Yeah," she said, turning around in his arms to face him.
"Do you think maybe the reason you felt relaxed enough to fall asleep on the plane was the diaper? Like maybe it helped you feel safe and calm, even if it was subconscious?"
He knew it was a vulnerable question and he pulled her in closer while she thought. After a few beats of silence, he lifted her chin with his thumb and felt tears on her cheeks.
"Oh, baby, I'm sorry. It was just a thought. I didn't mean to imply..." he trailed off, not quite sure what he didn't mean to imply.
"No," she said through sniffles. "You're right. I'm sorry. It's just so embarrassing. I'm so embarrassed. As soon as I got dressed in that diaper this morning it was so good and comfy. I didn't want to tell you that because I don't really know what to make of it and... I don't know. It's obviously really embarrassing. I'm sorry."
He hugged her tight, his hand pressing into her back to bring her little body all the way into his.
"Baby, you have nothing to be sorry for. And you have nothing to be embarrassed about. Not with me. Nothing is embarrassing with me, okay?"
"But..." she began to respond, but he stopped her.
"Baby, there's no but. You have nothing to be embarrassed of in this room with me right now. Do you understand?"
It didn't matter that she was still embarrassed. He was giving her no choice but to agree.
"I understand," she conceded.
"Good girl," he said. "Now, we need to get you to sleep for your big day tomorrow. Do you think your diapers might help you get to sleep?"
She nodded.
"I think so too. Do you want to put your diaper on yourself or do you want me to do it for you?"
"You," she said softly. She was surprised how easy the decision was.
"Perfect. Let's get my brave girl in her diaper for the night" he said, kissing her forehead. "Lie on the bed for me. I'll be right there."

The iPhone alarm woke them at eight. Disoriented and groggy, they turned to each other for their usual morning cuddles. As their bodies tangled, he felt her warm diaper against his thigh and remembered last night.
"Did you have a good sleep, baby?" he asked.
"Mmhmmmmm!" she responded, sleepy and content.
"Good," he said, kissing the tip of her nose.
As their eyes woke up, they took each other in. They didn't quite have the words for it yet, but they both saw that they'd found something new in their relationship. Something deep and intimate and special and fun. They kissed.
"I'm not supposed to be embarrassed with you, right?" she asked.
"Never," he answered.
"Can I suck my thumb while you cuddle me for a little bit?"
"Of course, baby."
He watched her intently as her hand found its way to her face and she sealed her lips around her little thumb. She closed her eyes and felt him rubbing her diapered bottom while she gently sucked, thinking about everything that's possible for a girl who's not embarrassed.
