YOUR ART. SO YUM. I WILL EAT IT UP. Do you have any tips on how to draw faces? Everytime I try, they end up looking nothing like the reference pic. Ly <3
Hi Tehya ! Thank you so much for your kind comment.
Boy do I have a lot of tips. βοΈπ
Big post under the cut that's basically a breakdown of my process for semi realistic studies or sketches.
You got your first step down properly bc you're using at least one reference ! You get one candy at the end of class for that !/j. I recommend getting several pictures of the character/person you're trying to draw tho, to really understand what you're looking at :) Different pictures = different angles and or lighting to really get the complete picture.
Step 1.5 would be to study the face you want to reproduce, note the key details that makes that person unique (that's why having several references is good). What's their specific eye shape and how can you simplify it, how long is their hair and is it usually neatly styled or tousled, what's their nose shape, do they have a beauty mark, thin or full lips, what are the musculoskeletal features visible on their face..... etc. You're not just looking at your subject but analysing it properly to determine what makes that person unique :)
Second, if you decide on following a specific ref, I actually recommend using a very basic grid to get started !!! That's how I got taught in art school, so that's what I'm recommending, but I know some people think you should do everything by eye. I don't see the grid method as "cheating" because all it's doing is helping you to get your key features placed properly. The real work comes from what you chose to put in or to leave out, how much details you use, how you decide to simplify a shape, etc... also trust me you wont need the grid anymore once you develop an eye for proportions.... or just draw one specific character over and over....
Third, once you have a basic sketch, you're free to start tweaking things a little ! Give your character some life while keeping your references in mind. Accentuate a grin or the thickness of eyebrows, how open or closed the eyes are. You can also add or delete features that you put in your first sketch too, especially if you're drawing a younger character!!! It's harder to capture someone's face accurately when they're young, because adding details will make them look older... Again that's where the "artistry" comes in, and that's something I can't really teach because its very much a "does it looks right to my eye" situation, not something you can explain, sorry. Trust your own eye and the process. I promise it'll be worth it.
Step 3.5: Trust the process but also, trust your guts ! If it doesn't look right, you shouldn't feel bad about starting over. I delete most of my sketches when I start to get frustrated over something, because sometimes it's better to step back for a second than to obsess over details. Don't be afraid to start over.
Step 4 is to have fun. Just... have fun. It's a hobby, not a competition. I see so many people who try to get started and immediately struggle and compare themselves to everybody else. Not to be an old goober about it, but as a kid, when I started drawing, I thought I was good (I wasn't π) bc I just didn't have social media to compare myself to... I don't know if I wouldve been where I am today if I had that pressure to perform since the beginning...
Also final little tip: I'd recommend using a large brush size at the beginning. It's easy to lose yourself in tiny details and try to put as much info as possible in one sketch, but the truth is, it going to be overwhelming for both you and the person who's gonna look at your art. Using a big brush helps you synthesise your work and be mindful of the shapes you're putting down.
Thank you for reading all of this, I hope it was useful. Again, that's only my tips for my specific approach to drawing, that I don't even necessarily use every time. So. Yeah. Do with my yapping what you will lmao.

Soooo a while ago @thejbomb posted chapter 3 of this awesome fic: Under Streetlights and i was spontaneously enamoured with this scene in particular β‘β‘ i then dillydallied over the wip farrrr too long and only yesterday got my act together and finished it β‘
They're having the time of their lives (even if Ice had to be skillfully blackmailed into participating)

hi!! you mentioned having fics a while ago, do you have an ao3? π
This is interesting because I don't have any fic written and therefore dont remember mentioning anything fic related ??? π
Possibly you mistook me for someone else or I talked about my writing in confusing ways oops. (Because yes do write but I've got exactly 0 fic rn, just a few scraps of wips here and there...)
The moment I have something semi-decent, you bet it's gonna go to ao3 tho π
saw top gun again (in cinema this time!) and it made me go watch maverick despite my parents both hating it and being the reason i never seen it before now. anyways surprise surprise my favourite characters are rooster and goose and i knew i had to draw rooster
JUST DROPPED 20 HARD WON BUCKS ON THIS BAD BOY. HE SHALL BE MINE.
Top Gun summer is gonna go crazy. I didn't find any licensed Tomcat that wasn't egregiously expensive so I might get a non top gun one in the near future. Eyeing the Hot Wings collection.
(WHICH BTW. IDK IF ANYONE HERE IS ALSO INTERESTED IN AVIATION IN GENERAL SO MAYBE IM SCREAMING AT THE VOID. But why is it so hard to find a good brand of specifically TOY diecast planes ??? Like aside from hot wings, there's not that many I could find... Maisto's Tailwind collection seemed amazing but it's discontinued from what I could see ? Anyway yeah.... I need them for stimming purposes, so I dont really fancy taking a 50β¬ 1/72 scale model everywhere with me if that makes sense... Even the one pictured above Im not sure I'll actually be taking around bc it technically is a collectors item :/)
hii i love your style sm!! do you sell your art anywhere ??
Thank you so so much !! The answer to your question is both yes and no :(
It's a sore point for me right now, because I used to have a redbubble, but they're frankly predatory towards both buyers and artists...
I wish I could sell my prints from home, but that represents a significant investment. I've also thought of just selling my high quality png files for 5β¬ for people to print however they want; but idk, 5 bucks for a digital file sounds too high ππ
I do take commissions tho, if you're interested in that !
not a request I just want to personally thank you for feeding into the severe mental illness that is my top gun obsession by creating absolutely awesome edible art <3
@47-possums-in-a-trenchcoat I'll be honest, you and me both lmao- Top Gun has been absolutely eating my brain wormstyle since last year, and since I don't know what to do with all the feelings I have about these movies, I just throw that into my art !!!
Im so glad people like it, and I thank you all for your kindness and support
Chomp
Im sorry I still wanted to draw something but nothing came up
