Tony Stark > Iron Man
We don't doubt Tony's character here. Not even for a second.
Tony who saw so much of himself in Peter. He saw this kid and saw who he would be if he was better. He never told Peter because he didn’t want him to carry that kind of responsibility unlike his father did to him. Tony looked at Peter and saw so much of himself.
After he died, Tony saw much more of himself in Peter. He saw the anxiety, the panic, the guilt. He saw the responsibility the world put on Peter’s shoulders, more than he himself ever had to carry. Tony looked at Peter and saw himself. Who he would be if his life would’ve been 30 times worse. He saw that his death was the cause for most of it. And he wishes for nothing more than to find a way back to Peter.
Tony Stark’s death made the world a better place. But it made Peter Parker’s world into hell.

Tony Stark is such an interesting character. He's a war profiteer, and he's made billions of dollars out of his weapons company. But after he's horribly confronted with the death and destruction that it causes, he stops manufacturing. He actually says, "No, we can't do the capitalistic thing because it's the wrong thing to do." He chooses the good thing over the profitable thing, even though it could cost him everything that made him who he was.
He's also brilliant-- he invents so many things all the time!! Where he used to design weapons, now he designs other things to help keep the peace (like the Iron Man suit). He's clever enough to keep it out of the government's hands, and he's determined enough to see most of his ideas through.
On top of this, he's also incredibly caring. He cares so much about the people close to him and he hides it through his humor and unaffected demeanor. (Not even just people-- he made DUM-E when he was in college and he's still around. Despite all the, "I'm going to give you to a community college" jokes, Tony kept his faithful little robot by his side.)
And don't even get me started about his relationship with Peter!! What began as a "You help me out since I'm Iron Man" work relationship evolved into a mentorship and eventually a father-son relationship. Tony tried incredibly hard to show Peter he cared and put in the effort (in Homecoming, he talked about not wanting to be as distant as his father).
My point is, I know all of this stuff about him, and I know that he's done so many good things and is a good person.
And all of this flies out the window the second he opens his mouth.
since Tony needed Yinsen to translate for him in the cave this implies that he learned Dari afterwards.
Maybe because he felt helpless unable to understand—in general, due to his intelligence, but especially in such a dangerous scenario—or to honour Yinsen's sacrifice and his contribution saving Tony's life in several ways, or to prevent people from plotting behind his back and under the radar of his inattention or knowledge gaps again

look at tony stark and see ego. and underneath the ego is insecurity. and under the insecurity is fear. And under the fear is a desperation to be loved. and under the desperation to be loved is a resignation that love cannot save him. And there’s nothing under that resignation, at least not since he was a little boy
How many birthdays do you think Tony believed would be his last? How many times did he try to make the most of it, assuming the day wouldn’t come again. Wavering between openly loving his friends one last time and being a dick so that it hurts them less next year. How many do you think were before the age of 10? Thinking it’s his last one, getting sad at the gifts he’d “grow into” because he doesn’t know if he will. He spends the week leading up to his birthday trying to remember hour by hour what he did on the last one, just to remind himself that not EVERY detail of it matters.
Happy birthday, Tony. You’re not around to see it but it still came.
Tony’s birthday after the cave, before Obie reveals his true colors. Obie makes it a surprise party. He likes roses Tony flustered, likes to see how he performs when he’s caught off his game. Obie invites the usual hoards of women eager to sleep with the embodiment of success, who care very little about the man experiencing it. Men with expensive cologne and even more expensive child support bills, all piled into a space Tony expected to be safe.
He wasn’t warned, of course. The welcome feels like the Hum-vee is falling over. The first arm slung around his shoulders is Obie’s, of course. Tony covers the arc reactor out of pure instinct, terrified at all the strangers and trying to save face.
Obie parades him around, tells him that leaving the business of war means he’s got to go full force on the business of partying. Tony can’t put a name to Obie’s glare, but if he could, he’d call it anticipation.
Obie thinks this will be Tony’s last birthday, and by god he’s going to make it a memorable one. Obie pretends to forget about the arc reactor and starts up teasing, getting a few women to start trying to get him out his shirt. When Tony refuses, Obie slithers in to chide him about cutting ties with allies in this hard financial time.
Tony goes to bed alone and he locks the door four times behind him, drunk and terrified and forgetting to respond to the people in his phone that message him to wish him a genuine congrats.
They’ll hear he was too shitfaced to call back. They’ll scoff. Typical Tony.

Happy Birthday to one of the most important characters in my life, words can't explain how many things in my life has changed since I've seen him on the screen for the first time and what a journey it has been since then <3
Happy Birthday to the greatest man alive (yes, he is alive, thank you very much)! Words won’t be enough to express everything I want to say about him.
Tony Stark is so very dear to me. He is one of the most caring and loving people ever. Even though he pretends not to, he has a big heart. He is so smart and clever. Dare I say he’s the smartest man on earth? He built a whole suit plus a miniature arc reactor in a cave while fighting for his life. He became part of a team that became his family. He loved every one of them, every one of his family. He wasn’t related to any of them but they were still his family. He had to fight his whole life and still was able to become a great and loving person and I think that’s one of the best things he’s ever done.
tony stark who keeps the arc rector in his chest despite it no longer being medically necessary. Tony keeping it because it is his penance. Tony keeping it because it is his proof to himself that he can survive. Tony keeping it because he doesn’t deserve to breathe easy anymore, after letting Obie run the place. Tony keeping it as an emergency backup plan, in case he ever needs to strategically get a lot of attention from the media. Tony keeps the arc reactor in his chest because removing it at this point would remove most of his chest muscle and he just can’t stand feeling like a powerless scrawny 16 year old kid again. Tony keeps it because it’s a good reminder to himself that being a party boy isn’t an option anymore.
Tony who keeps the arc reactor long past necessary, because he doesn’t want to go back to feeling purposeless. They put protective metal over his heart and now his job is to do the same to the world. Removing it feels like giving up. (living pain free feels like giving up).
The second tony steps a foot on Earth, he realizes that it was all real.
He went to space. He fought thanos. He lost the kid. He spent weeks lost in space waiting for a merciful death.
Everytime he went to sleep on that ship, he hoped he'd wake up gasping, covered in cold sweat, but in his own bed. He hoped it was all a nightmare. Hoped that his kid was swinging around the city and stopping bicycle thefts. But he never woke up from that nightmare. Instead, he landed on Earth, and realized it wasn't a nightmare. It's real.

I think people way too easily overlook the fact that Tony Stark shut down his weapon production factory. Sure it was only after he experienced getting blown up by one of those weapons himself. And I'd have to refresh my memory on why he was out there in the first place but I think it may have been to see how the missiles perform? Regardless, he saw firsthand how bad those weapons were and his first move when he got back home was to shut it down asap.
The billionaire shut down one of his money makers. Because he realized it was harming people.
We should send more billionaires to visit the front lines...
Tony’s lab has always been his fortress. It’s a place he hides away when he doesn’t feel like facing the world. Needless to say, it’s more function than form— Pepper would often comment on how bland and depressing the place seemed when she would come down to visit him.
But how could it be any different? He’d think to himself as he laughed off the comment. He came here to work himself to a numbness. And when his brain was silent and his hands were left to their own devices, most of the things they built were weapons, things made to destroy. It was all they could seem to do.
But then Peter comes into his life. He leaves little notes with funny messages all over Tony’s workbench before he leaves. He forgets his jacket on his stool. He dims the lights and messes with the thermostat (much to Tony’s frustration, who has always been Lord of the Thermostat). And he’s brilliant— he has good ideas, great ones, ones that help people.
His science test is on the mini-fridge. His blanket is on the couch. His blueprints are on the table. Peter leaves his handprints on everything he touches— a trail of creation— and while Tony wasn’t looking, Peter’s life became intertwined with his.
[stop here if you want to stay happy.]
[alright, you asked for it.]
And when Peter’s gone, Tony can feel the life he brought leave with him.
The first time he goes back to lab after the Snap, it’s months later. The place is exactly how he left it— now settled in dust, but still eerily out of time. He doesn’t bother flicking on the lights.
He wanders through the place, absentmindedly swiping dust off surfaces, picking up tools and putting them down… He avoids the right side of the room. There are ghosts there.
But then he notices it. Sitting on his workbench is a wrench. The wrench that only works on the prototype extra-strength bolts Tony had engineered, the one he’d let Peter borrow. The one that Tony would constantly remind Peter to return, but Peter, being Peter, would get distracted and forget to bring it with him. Tony had been so frustrated. He can hardly remember why.
He turns it over in his hands. On the bottom is a small post-it note, with scribbled writing: sorry it took so long. please don’t kill me! - peter
The ache in his ribs takes over, and Tony folds in on himself, barely managing to catch himself on the side of the workbench. He gives in, falling to the floor, and the tears start to come, and once it starts, it doesn’t stop, and he’s on his hands and knees, heaving and choking on his sobs— you lost him, you lost him, you lost him. The misery comes out like a sickness, like vomit, like a virus his body forcefully rejects, and to give into it would mean death.
And it was death, in a way. Because while Tony wasn’t looking, Peter’s life became intertwined with his, and now that Peter was gone, Tony had lost an irreplaceable part of himself.
