i just read washington square (by henry james) and i think that literally the only reason that matthew macfadyen was never cast as morris townsend was because the best adaptation came out a year before his film debut, and he was too old by the time that there might have been a point in adapting again

tailgate party beginning with tom shmoozing shiv in the most lazy and also self-destructive way... bringing her breakfast that someone else made, giving her a gift that he says is "for being such a hot piece of ass" and to say he's glad they're hosting together, but the gift is some cheap resin shit that's self-describedly a joke, which i simply cannot imagine he wholeheartedly believed shiv would actually like... like it's either a purposeful jab in spite of his precarious situation and his attempts to hold onto shiv as an achor or it's proof that despite their years together, he still barely knows her. #ilovedivorceyayy
