tagged by @ueberdemnebelmeer to share my last 4 watched, thank you! there was a film festival here last week so 3/4 are from that :)
the wind rises (2013) dir. hayao miyazaki — axis powers cottagecore?? am i missing something?? didn't like this very much
kwibuka (2025) dir. jonas d'adesky — good!! a little too sentimental and shot like a tourist board advertisement in places but entirely saved for me by its final scene which i haven't stopped thinking about all week. i wrote a long post about it that's still in my drafts might post it later...
kubana (2026) dir. alunaya — insipid propaganda piece unfortunately. do you think the m23 militia has girl power etc. too bad, the visuals and music had a lot of potential, as would a more rigorous anticolonial/pan-africanist engagement with this history
the kids are ok (2024) dir. abba makama — very sweet and genuine and touching! a little out of touch maybe and tonally odd especially at the end but i liked this a lot. the minister for youth and culture made a weird speech at the beginning of the festival warning the young people in the audience to beware of the influence of cinema on "our traditional values" and i'm pretty sure she was talking about this one lol

Farewell my concubine. Fanart for the movie i really liked watching.
my take on/a Polish-language adaptation of Lucan's Death - clarify by @plasmapop.
like the original, everything here is sourced from the wikipedia article on Lucan - initially I wanted to make a straight-forward translation but the Polish article makes for comparatively poor building material. this is in effect a different poem.
quick English translation for the non-Polish speaking of you lads under the cut

Maggie Cheung wears a different cheongsam dress in each scene. There were 46 dresses in total, though not all made it to the final cut.
