this is why its depressing to work in a pharmacy.
I was definitely a profit killer when I worked in a pharmacy (which honestly was my favorite job in the entire world, but it was short-lived and nowadays you canât work at a pharmacy like that, itâs all tied in with corporate retail and no one should ever trust me with a cash register ever). It was not, however, actually a profit killer for the pharmacy, just for the drug companies, so no one cared. These days I do medical billing, which means I actually bill OUT from hospitals so Iâm mostly spending my professional time taking money away from insurance companies.Â
I will now impart all of my profit killing resources onto you, in case you donât know them. I think most of you know them, now. But just in case you donât.
THIS IS US-CENTRIC. IâM SORRY.Â
1. GoodRx - this thing has an app now, so you can look up the best places to get your expensive medicines at the lowest possible prices without insurance on the go, and you no longer have to print coupons because you can just hand over your phone or tablet. Times have changed for the better with GoodRx. Definitely use it before trying to fill your scrip, because it will tell you the best place to go. (You can do that on the website, too.)
2. NeedyMeds - Needymeds is basically the clearinghouse of drug payment assistance. They have their own discount cards, but also connections to many patient assistance programs run by drug companies themselves. They are good assistance programs, too.
3. Ask your county - This is not a link. This is a pro tip. Most county social services will have pharmacy discount programs for people with no and/or shitty pharmaceutical coverage. You can often just find them hanging around at social services offices; you can just pick one up and walk off with it.Â
4. Ordering online - There are a few safe online pharmacies. I keep a little database in a text file on my computer. Most of them are courtesy of CFS forums, my mother or voidbat, so a lot of that is a hat tip to other people, but if youâre in need of a place to get a drug without a prescription ⌠first Iâll make sure you 100% know what youâre doing for safety reasons and then Iâm happy to turn over a link.Â
5. Healthfinder - A government resource that helps find patient assistance programs in your area. This might also point out the convenient county card thing. RxHope is something a lot of people get pointed to via Healthfinder thatâs a good program.
6. Mental Health America - Keeps a list of their best PAPs for psychiatric medications, which can be some of the most expensive and a lot of pharmacy plans donât cover them at all.Â
This is so important ppl.

Good Rx Saved my family a hundred dollars a month while I was getting signed up for CHIP seriously itâs a life savor especially for ridiculously expensive drugs like abilify
Useful info, friends! ;)
Since many of our followers are on medications, I feel like this would be an important resource. -Luna
Also! Some drug companies have patient assistance programs where they send you the drug for FREE if you are uninsured, or if your insurance doesnât cover that drug.
Do a Google search for âpatient assistant programsâ + (your med), or search the manufacturers website. Sometimes the info is online; other times you have to call.
Even some of the big name pharma companies have this. Itâs certainly not all companies, or all meds, but it is worth a shot.
Before Obamacare, I lost insurance and couldnât pay for my mood stabilizers (kiiiiinda important to have those when youâre bipolar.) I was on generic Lamictal, but I went to the official Lamictal website, filled out a form with a valid prescription, and they mailed my meds to me every month for free.
If you know anything about bipolar disease, you know that that was a literal life saver. Patient assistance programs ftw!
This is so important given the recent vote to repeal Obamacare. And the cartoon above is so on point Theyâre literally voting to kill people. Literally.
Some of my meds are no longer going to be partially covered by my ridiculously expensive private insurance. I just used the GoodRX website to look it up, and I can either spend $40 at Target to pay for one of them out of pocketâper monthâ, or I can get it at Sams Club for $4. No that is not a typo. The drug I need to take every single day to keep my allergies from spiraling out of control (yay auto-immune bullshit) is literally ten times cheaper at Sams Club. Holy shit.

I donât think healthy people every really get chronic illness.
I have a friend I know from when we were both 6. She is the only person living nearby and so she saw me go from walking through limping to wheelchair on a daily basis. I keep her updated on my health even tho we rarely hang out anymore. She was gonna come over yesterday and I had to cancel. She asked if I canât hang out later that day. When I said i wonât feel better later, that if I feel that bad in the morning later will only get worse she got annoyed and âjokedâ that Iâm just finding excuses. And I was surprised, she knows all about me being disabled after all? So, a bit taken aback, I told her itâs a normal thing for me.
âBut you got the diagnosis now, arenât you better?? I thought youâll get better nowâ
She was honestly surprised and it made me realize a thing. They donât get it. They donât get that getting diagnosed only equals benefits like welfare or parking spot for us, and sometimes better pain meds but that is just like pushing luck. That itâs a forever thing. That that one day we felt good a week ago was just a bright spot and doesnât mean we wonât need our aids anymore, cause chronic illness is not linear and will make a great comeback in next four hours, and the next good day is planned on when weâre 70. Cause when abled people are sick, they get better. And our illness is just an excuse for them. And when we say we will never get better they think weâre being dramatic and pessimistic. And I donât think theyâll ever get it, cause to get it you need to live it. And I want my friends to stay healthy and not go through hell.
This is definitely okay to reblog and abled people are encouraged to reblog cause maybe itâll help others understand
Hello itâs me Lexa and this post is relevant again as I just had the Legit Same Talk with someone and I exhausted my number of fucks to give
Oh my god I literally had this conversation with my mother an hour ago.
Mum:Â âSo yeah, I was thinking that when I come down we could do visit an art gallery or a museum or something.â
Me:Â âIâll have to see if Iâm up for it, Iâve been going through a rough patch. I might not have the energy.â
Mum:Â âBut you love art galleries.â
Me:Â âI know. What part of âit hurts to walk long distances nowâ is hard for you though?â
I routinely have people well aware of my disabilities/chronic illness congratulate me on how I âseem to be doing so much better these days!â on a good pain/energy day and then basically try to stage an intervention a week later on a bad one. âYou seem to be on a decline lately, Iâm just concerned youâre not taking care of yourself!â And then a week later on a good day again congratulate me on how I really seem to have improved and must be making a real effort to keep on top of my health, with no irony or self-awareness whatsoever. The narrative of âgetting betterâ is so ingrained that healthy abled people will ignore massive amounts of cognitive dissonance to apply it where it makes absolutely no sense.
And this belief in âgetting betterâ is actively harmful because thatâs how we get shitty things like people having their benefits âreviewedâ and taken away because itâs been ten years and theyâre not going to the doctor âenough.â They donât need to get constant treatment after they know what they have, but that doesnât mean theyâre magically cured or just ânot tryingâ!!! It means theyâre ill, theyâre always going to be ill, and going to the doctor every week isnât going to change that (not to mention itâs expensive af)!
I see this in my job much more frequently than I should (we help people fight benefit denials and occasionally get back benefits after these âreviewsâ). Sometimes itâs justified - the person went back to work - but more often, itâs not, itâs just that some worker somewhere decided that this person or that person should be all better by now, and thatâs just not how chronic illness works, so ending this idea that chronically ill people will just get better would help put a stop to shit like that.
They cannot comprehend that we do not control our health. In their world, when people are sick itâs because they caught it from someone else, and if you stay sick itâs your fault for not taking care of yourself. They cannot fathom a  world where you canÂ
do everything right and still be sick.Â
âdonât let your disability define you! Fight! INspirEd! Taking back my life from Cancer!â This narrative is everywhere in Able culture. If you JUST tried harder youâd get better. THAT is what they live and believe.
Therefore to them if we are âstillâ sick or âSick Againâ itâs because WE did something wrong. They canât comprehend a world where you canât Earn health as a reward for performing purity, kale and yoga.
