Tonys Actor Roundtable: âHamiltonâ Star, 6 Other Broadway Standouts on Diversity, Rude Audiences (aka 7 White Dudes and One PoC actor on Diversity, despite this being the most diverse season of Broadway)Â
âYou know, I love the theater and I love this moment that weâre having right now. But I am not so fast to praise. What I think weâre having is a rare moment. What we really need to pay attention to is the next two seasons. Oftentimes, from my career, Iâve watched my white counterparts and imagine, if you would, if a white actor was having a similar situation as Iâm having right now in this show, the kind of success of this show, there might be three or four offers a week for the next shows youâre going to do. There are no shows for me to do. Thereâs just no roles. You know, especially when you look at an Aaron Burr â you look at the complexity, the humanity in this part. Thereâs no [comparable] parts for me to play, right? Unless weâre talking about somebodyâs going to reimagine something, somebodyâs going to let me do a She Loves Me or a Music Man. These are roles that were written for white actors. And so I donât say that toâ Iâll take care of myself. Iâll be fine. Iâll go do music. Iâll go do TV. Iâll go do what I have to do. But I hope what weâre going to see is five, six years from now, the shows that this show [Hamilton] has inspired. Thereâs young writers now that are being inspired by the show that are going to start writing today. But as far as diversity on Broadway? Iâd be interested to see what the next two or three seasons look like, because I donât hear a whole lot of stuff.â â Leslie Odom Jr., keeping it real as always.Â
