Chapter Summary:

James falls back into old habits after striking out with an attractive bartender. Sirius gets a little more than he expected when he goes looking for the motel’s wifi password.

Excerpt:

“How is it that even in a little nothing place like this everyone is queer but me?” complained James.

“Shhh,” said Sirius indulgently glancing toward the desk. “Don’t be outing people in the motel lobby.”

The round-faced clerk from that morning was back behind the desk. Sirius gave him a wave. Remus, he remembered.

“Course not,” James said. “I would never. I just meant ….”

“That your sure thing and your hopeful thing went off together and left you high and dry, and you’re feeling a little salty about it?”

James nudged Sirius’s shoulder. “I thought you were my ‘sure thing’.”

Sirius’s heart skipped a beat and he glanced toward the desk again, even though he knew the clerk could not possibly have overheard. Taking a firmer grip on James’s arm, he hauled him through the door into the empty courtyard.

“I thought we were done with all that,” he said quietly, trying to keep his tone light and even, “because of how heterosexual you are.”

Although the glasses were only around a foot away, there was something immensely satisfying about seeing them zoom towards him, at least until they poked him in the eye.

‘Come on, Ginny’s not bad,’ said George fairly, sitting down next to Fred. ‘Actually, I dunno how she got so good, seeing how we never let her play with us.’ ‘She’s been breaking into your broom shed in the garden since the age of six and taking each of your brooms out in turn when you weren’t looking,’ said Hermione from behind her tottering pile of Ancient Rune books. 'Oh,’ said George, looking mildly impressed. 'Well, that’d explain it.'

Remus didn’t miss a beat. "No," he replied flatly.

"Oh." Sirius nodded, forcing a smile, though disappointment flickered in his eyes. "Okay."

But then Remus leaned closer, his eyes hazy with alcohol, gaze fixed on Sirius with an intensity that sent a shiver down his spine. "Ask me anyway," he said softly.

Sirius hesitated, searching Remus’s face for a sign. Then, with a deep breath, he let the words tumble out. "Will you dance with me?"
