*seductively lays across your lap and starts crying*
There are mistakes you have to make. For love. For closure. At three in the morning, when you cannot sleep and the world is unbearably still and lifeless, and any chance of a normal life is locked away in a dawn that will never come. (Normal like three weeks ago, like last year, like thirty years ago. Or if not normal, any word that could encompass the few good things that used to brighten his days) His impulse control is sleeping in the other room. Albert reaches for his phone.
[Text] You still there?
Well now, mistakes might as well be his middle name. Especially middle of the night mistakes that are just a message away. Â
[TEXT:] is this directed at me or him?

Cooper wakes up to a world that is upside down. Literally.
âOh, Dale. Good of you to finally join me.â Windom smiled, sitting in front of a chess board a few feet away. âIn case youâre wondering why everything is suddenly topsy turvy, I will proceed to enlighten you about some of the details of your present situation. You are currently suspended by your ankles in the middle of my humble forest abode, which is approximately 15 miles from any sort of civilization in every direction. You may also notice the restraints around your wrists. Duct tape really does solve everything!â
He lifted up a glass of cognac and tilted it in Cooperâs direction. âTo old times and old friendships. Bottoms up, Dale.âÂ
Daleâs head hurts something terrible and the last thing he remembers is his hotel room.Â
âWindom.â Heâs not really able to say much of anything else. Yes, its Windom. Also this place smells absolutely vile. Wood rot, filth, and Windomâs tobacco smoke burn his nostrils. He feels like heâs going to be sick. Should he vomit, it wonât be pretty like this.Â
âWhat do you want from me?â He doesnât look particularly intimidating upside down but he gives him as stern a look as he can manage.Â
And, how on earth did he get here? Â
For a moment Dale doesnât say anything. He takes it in and tucks it away in some checkerboard compartment in his mind. As he does with all of Windomâs lessons. Heâs amassed quite a collection in year theyâve been partners.
He glances down at the chessboard thatâs perched between them. He still canât think of a good move. Windom won this match just a few turns ago. This is his least favorite part of the game, waiting.
ââŚI donât think of myself as a martyr, Windom.â
âThatâs the whole trouble, Dale.â He pointed at Cooper with the stem of his pipe. âYou donât see it, because no instructor of yours ever bothered to offer you a mirror. â He hooked his pipe back into his mouth, settling back into the chair and crossing his legs, waiting for Cooper to make his move. âI know what they teach at the academy, Dale. Armchair agents who havenât been in the field for years, thinking they remember what it means to encounter evil face to face. Prattling on about a duty to âprotect and serve.â Meanwhile, all around them the whole world is going up in flames.âÂ
Dale pushes a pawn across the board. Frowns at it, as if itâs just choosing to make him lose.Â
âI agree to some extent...but thatâs why weâre here. To put out the fires.â
He takes a sip of his wine. He really didnât have much of a taste at all for the stuff before these dinners became the highlight of his week. Now he fins himself enjoying the taste much more.Â
Caroline said goodnight just a few minutes ago. He can still feel the impression of a hand print on his shoulder.
âWhat a martyr craves more than anything is a sword to fall on,â Windom admonished. âDonât be a martyr, Dale, it doesnât suit you. A career in the Bureau will offer plenty of opportunities to play the hero, I assure youâonly a fool takes them.â

The soft hum of the microwave over the hushed din of the television really sets a tone for his shadowâs touch. Cooperâs brown eyes find their way to the point of contact, getting lost in the ambient sounds of modern civilization. His twin feels soft, amazingly so for a man born from a place fire and distilled hate. Even flowers push through concrete, he reminds himself, so perhaps this softness wasnât so strange after all. He hopes that his own gentle nature survived, and that the fragments lodged in his chest would form whole sooner than later.
Dale curls his fingers, enjoying the sensation of the otherâs skin against his. He then softly nods, and says, âYouâre welcome. Thank you for being so willing to have me.â
âWhere else would you go?â He cradles his twinâs hand between his own and just enjoys the atmosphere for a moment.Â
âIsnât it nice? I havenât been able to turn it off since I got back. Just a little noiseâŚitâs very nice.â
The popcorn starts popping and that snaps Dale out of his mood. He shoots Jericho a big grin.Â
âWhat do you think babe? I think I age pretty well.â
The blond had been simply watching the two touch and hold each other as if it were nothing. It wasnât strange that Dale was cooing at himself twenty five years older. It wasnât strange that they looked about two seconds from being wrapped up in one another. It wasnât strange that he was allowed to view this, and then asked what he thought about how his lover aged.
âThink so too, sweetpea.â Jericho puts his thoughts behind him for now. Obviously the two needed this, and the two needed to feel like they were okay with one another and themselves, âBut I think nâstead of popcorn Mâgonna get you two somethinâ better tâeat. You can save that for later.â He then gets up, oblivious to the fact that him being naked might be a problem and goes to fetch his clothes he was wearing previously. Coopers did well with coffee in their hands, and it was a good idea to get them the best coffee around. He remembers how Dale lit up when they sat down in that diner down the road, so it was best to start there.
âWonât be long. You two jusâ sit pretty right here.â
Just a day ago he would have started shrieking at the thought of being alone for so long, so far from Jer! But heâs not alone now, is he.
âThank you, Jer.â
Dale is sure to kiss him on the cheek before he gets far from the bed, of course. Then he settles back down next to Cooper, beaming. He picks up his hand again, squeezing it enthusiastically.Â
âIsnât he just wonderful?âÂ
He watches Jer gets dressed and sighs. âSomeday the world will catch up to your vision of a bare and free future.â
âSitting pretty is what we do best.â He waves goodbye.

Dale winks at him and puts a bag of popcorn in the microwave. Then he sits himself down right next to his twin. âWe havenât been doing much of anything.â He sighs and takes his hand, peering down at the familiar pattern of veins and unfamiliar wrinkles. âItâs been really boring, laying low.â
ââŚthank you for for coming over.âÂ

The giant squints only slightly at Daleâs older double as the two of them walk in. Itâs not as if heâs just splayed out on the bed waiting for them. No, he is actually quite considerate and has folded himself up a little to shield âvirginâ eyes from his groin. His bottom, on the other hand, is another matter.
âMake yerself at home.â Jericho offers in a drawl. He knows that what they have here isnât much, and with a little picking up after Dale itâs at least better than they found it. Jericho makes it a habit to find all the little bits of forgotten wrappers, papers and matches left behind when Dale gets excited about something which was not too long before they headed out to collect his double for the âsleepoverâ.
âWe got some cold drinks in thâfridge.â
Itâs a really nice butt and Dale canât imagine why anyone wouldnât want to see it. He grins at his twin. Isnât he the best?Â
âAre you hungry? We have popcornâŚchipsâŚValentines candyâŚwe can order out?â
This really was beginning to feel like some weird form of a sleep over, and as Cooper closes the door behind him the feeling of nostalgia washes over slightly.Â
âThank you,â he says, âThank you both. I think I do feel a little hungry, actually.â Doing a quick surveying of the room, Dale notices that thereâs only one bed. It makes sense, but that also means that he would have to sit next to the naked giant that Albertâs voice keeps reminding him about the sex that apparently he and his shadow have. He knows that (most likely) nothing will come of him sitting next to the man on the bed but at the same time he is a little hungry.
So, he sits, finding himself a little more comfortable but also a little shaky from the thoughts running through his head. He glances over at Jericho, but as they meet gazes he looks back to his double with a bit of a nervous smile.
âI donât want to disrupt you more than I already have. Just behave like usual.â

âHeâs very lovely.â Dale murmurs, enjoying the feeling of peace instead of paranoia. He feels whole here, holding onto his shadows. There would be no sewing them back onto the heels of his feet, since they seemed much happier flying around free.Â
The blond in question, however, can be seen leaning out of the motel room doorway looking a little puzzled and a lot of naked. It causes Cooper to reel back slightly, still holding onto the doppelganger in his arms.
âUhâŚâ How had he undressed so quickly? Why was he undressed in the first place?
âHeâs wonderful! Heâs a great cook too. I wish we had a kitchen here.â
Dale laughs and tugs Cooperâs sleeve towards the direction of the door. âHeâs a free spirit. It doesnât bother you, does it?âÂ
There is the slightest of warnings in his twinâs voice. It better not be a problem. Or theyâll have a real problem.Â
Thereâs not much to say about the motel room. If decades of hell havenât eroded the memory from the real Dale Cooperâs mind heâll faintly recognize that it hasnât really changed much since he was here last. The doppelganger and the river man keep the place tidy at least. Lots of takeout containers in the waste basket.

ââŚI donât know all the time. But Jer, does.â He smiles. âIsnât he lovely?â
This is nice. Not feeling like he wants to crawl inside of his twin. Or being worried that heâs going to steal his Jericho.
âI wouldnât have lasted out here without him.â

Daleâs face twists with emotion, anger, grief. For a split second he looks like heâs about to bite but he squeezes his eyes shut and leans his head on his twinâs shoulder. Heâs tired.Â
âHe liked who we pretended to be.â
Cooper is tired too, and he feels the fatigue radiating from his double as he brings him into an embrace. He wonders why at first he was so afraid to see his double again when he was the closest thing he would get to a complete understanding. Perhaps it was just the basic human nature? Well, either way, his Lodge warped sense of reality made it easier to hold and comfort himself. The little shadows needed it.
âThey all did.â He murmurs, resting his head upon the otherâs, âBut we both know, deep down, that we like who we really are. In fact, youâre rather lucky to have Jericho. It seems like he really sees you.â
