“I’m going to say something that’s a little bit controversial, but is, in my opinion, true. I think because cops are so in our heads and in our hearts in so many ways, that asking quote unquote ‘the community’ how to solve police violence may produce terrible results. 

Here’s what I mean by that: We cannot live outside the structures we live under without hard work from imagination and decolonization. I’ve been to so many community meetings, CAPS meetings, or meetings where we ask people what they think would address police violence, people always point to community policing. And what they mean by that is if the cops knew us better, if they had a stake in the community, if they lived by us, they would be kinder and gentler. They would put a check on their violence against us. I think that idea is born out of an honest place. Yes, if you build relationships with people, they’re less likely to harm you. That’s just true.

Realizing that Prince covering Best of You is just the zenith of the shady games he played on the Foo Fighters/Grohl. Prince told Entertainment Weekly in 2004 that he hated the band’s cover of Darling Nikki (“Write your own tunes!”) which they had recorded and put on an Australian B-Side that got radio play in the US. And he’s right to. It’s the song that got content advisory labels put on albums and the Foos douse it in monotony. Their cover adds nothing, though I admit it might be fun to see live. Prince sits on this for three years, and when he does the Superbowl he performs a blended cover that he had leaked to the Howard Stern show a few weeks before (see where Queen Bey gets her ideas?) He starts with All Along the Watchtower, a song that has been covered ad nauseum, a standard bearer for song covers, a default song to cover, and then he just glides into The Best of You, reading the Foo Fighters for their basic, boring song structures... and then fucking murders them both! Makes you hear both songs in a way you never had before. That year Taylor Hawkins said it was better than their own version, and at some point (I am not digging in the archive/maybe it was yesterday) on the Stern show Grohl was asked the fucking stupid question of whether he thought Prince was a better musician than him and he very correctly said, “Dude, Prince is a better drummer than I am.” NOW FOUR YEARS LATER, 2011: Dave Grohl meets Prince IRL in Los Angeles and Prince invites him to jam before one of his residency performances. Grohl said to Howard Stern, who is clearly the real key player in this story: “I waited for him to call all week, I didn’t know whether I was going to play drums or guitar, his song or mine. I walked into the empty arena during soundcheck and Prince just appears … He picks up a bass and starts shredding … and we started playing ‘Whole Lotta Love”.” Then we end it, he said, ‘Yea that’s great,’ and I said, ‘Yeah that’s amazing,’ and he said, ‘What are you doing next week?’ and then I never saw him again.”
