One of the smaller things about Splatoon Raiders that I really appreciate is just how expressive The Mechanic is allowed to be!!

I’ve never been a huge fan of “blank slate protagonists” to be honest, but I know why a lot of games utilize them. Given that, I’m glad The Mechanic is able to actually show emotion and have a personality! Splatoon is a lively world, I like how the player character gets to be lively too!! It feels like The Mechanic is part of the setting and truly cares about what’s going on instead of being an empty vessel (If that makes sense?).

I always felt the player characters in the other Splatoon games sometimes felt out of place given how stoic they often were, even when every other character around them was so animated and had such fun personalities.

I actually really cared about the connection The Mechanic formed with Deep Cut because The Mechanic truly felt like one of them by the end. When Deep Cut refers to themselves + The Mechanic as the “Deep Fam” it really felt like a cute + earned payoff!

I do think it’s kinda funny that most of The Mechanic’s reactions to things are to be.. lowkey gobsmacked at everything, but they do have moments of being cute or cool or confident as well!!
