the caregiver and little one were laying on the couch watching some shows, the little one was in their caregivers lap while slowly loosing focus in the show and turning to their-
βbubba.β they spoke softly.
the caregiver turned to the little one, they hadnβt been regressed before the show started, something mustβve made them slip.
βhm?β that say back softly, stroking the others hair.
it took the other a minute before being able to speak, they looked as if it was almost hard to speak- not a very good sign to the caregiver.
βiβs.. iβs got the bad feelings again.β the little one than whispered, looking down to play with their fingers, as if they were lost in thoughts- exactly what they were.
that happened from time to time, the bad feelings were bad thoughts that the little one couldnβt always get rid of. making them think uncomfortable things, dangerous things, all of the above. it scared the caregiver time from time, not always understanding how to deal with the situation but when their heart broke a bit hearing their babyβs voice break like that- they did what they knew.
the little one was already in their lap facing away from them so they just brought their own hands out and laid them gently on the others, just soothing the tense skin- ready to soothe any clenched fingers or fists if needed.
the caregiver didnβt make a big deal, just softly rubbing down their little ones arms and humming quietly in their ear.
βdo you wanna tell bubba what the thoughts are saying?β the wonder quietlyc, sometimes it wa stood for the little one to talk about the thoughts but other times, distractions were enough.
βnuh-uh.β they shook their head miserably, not liking the mean thoughts- it broke the caregivers heart.
βokay, thatβs okay. would you like bubba to keep talking or to just keep doing what weβre doing now?β the caregiver asks softly, once more. still gently rubbing the skin of their arms, settling their worried body,
the little one mumbled back, β βalk?β
the caregiver hummed and took a moment to think of some things to say-
βhm, you did such a good job with helping me clean up earlier, bub. and those pictures you colored afterwards were so nice, donβt you think so?β they say gently, the other did do such a good job helping them- cleaning up even if they were a bit clumsy and unorganized.
the little one just hummed, deciding to lean their heavy feeling head down back onto their caregivers shoulder, eyes still open and focused on the tv but not really focused. just set on something.
βwhich one was your favorite to color, sweetheart?β the caregiver asked softly, thinking that maybe asking the little one some questions would keep their mind off of the bad thoughts they were having.
β.. βdoggie.β their baby mumbled, making the caregivers heart swell.
βthe doggie? yeah, I like that one too. I canβt tell from here, did you use your crayons or colored pencils?β more meaningless but helpful questions.
β crayons, βubba.β the little one said almost sleepily.
βah, the crayons are your favorite, arenβt they?β the caregiver smiled.
the other didnβt respond, just signed a heartbreaking breath.
this is how it would go, the caregiver would do their best to distract their baby from the mean thoughts and even if it helped- it didnβt mean the whole ordeal still didnβt tire the little one out and make them emotionally exhausted.
β βdon like these feelings, bubba.β the mutter, snuggling closer to their bubba.
βI know, petal. I wish I could make them go away.β
the thoughts would eventually go away, so would the sad sighs and tense skin but for now- the two were okay with the circumstances. they would ride out the annoying thoughts and eat some yummy snacks once they were calmed down.
the little one knew they were safe with their bubba, at least.
